On the eve of the 2006 NFL Draft, people are clamoring over the newest crop of NFL hopefuls.  It seems like each year surpasses the previous as the most over hyped event in NFL history.  After all the combines, workouts, pro-days, "measurables", interviews, and Wonderlic Tests, the attention the draft gets is really about two things.  The first is that it gives us yet another reason to talk and think about the upcoming NFL season.  The American sports fan can pass on a lot of things in life, but never an opportunity to think about the most beautiful thing in our ESPN-infested lives, the NFL season.  The second reason that we cannot get enough draft is because we learn which of these young 20-something future millionaires we are going to become fans of.  It's amazing how the color of a man's work uniform can so shape the way one thinks of him.  As for me, I will root for two guys from the first round of this draft.  Of course, the first is whoever gets the call from my beloved Seahawks.  The other is the most scrutinized player in this draft, Vince Young.  You would've thought that people would have learned by now that on the field performance trumps all. Mike Mamula, Ryan Leaf, and Tony Mandarich have all been cut in vain.  We haven't learned anything from these workout wonders.  Everyone saw the Rose Bowl.  Everyone saw the single greatest championship game performance in college football history, of course accomplished with "release points problems" and "an inability to effectively read defenses".  Last I checked, Pete Carroll runs NFL-style defenses with NFL-caliber players.  Ask him how Vince handled it.  All Vince Young has given NFL teams to think about is the fact that he gets his team in the winner's circle better than anyone in this draft.  When Texas needed Vince to be good, he was great.  When he needed to be great, he was legendary.  That's what great players do.  Did Montana have "all the tools"?  No.  Does Tom Brady?  Nope.  Those guys provide exactly what their teams need to win.  That is what makes them great, and that is what Vince Young is all about!
