To see their ashes rising like that of a phoenix to my mind has got to be the feel good story of the year. And especially when it comes from within the realms of college sports.
Dave Bliss the former coach of Baylor University. picture courtesy of i.a. cnn/net/si..........
The tumultous past of the Baylor University and that of its basketball team has been laid to rest. But to see this team come back from what has been a situation that for many on appearance seem so indescribable and senseless. It all now amounts to a nightmare that the students and faculty have awoken from. The death of one its star players Patrick Dennehy to a crime committed by teammate Carlton Dotson to this day for many is inexplicable. But what was even more disgusting was the action of then coach Dave Bliss.
Convicted killer Carlton Dotson , former Baylor University basketball player. picture courtesy of lancasteronline/images/dotsoncarlton
Bliss' actions doesn't speak highly of the man nor should his actions be excused. The allegations made against the slain player were unwarranted and completely unjustified . It set a precdent as to what a coach is prepared to go out and do to besmirch the reputation of not only a player but in some ways the university itself. His behind the scenes machinations were machavellian . And were it not for the effort conducted by law enforcement as well as that of the university itself we may never found out the truth.

Whilst no one questions the loss of Dennehy at this juncture it had to be saddening for the faculty and students to see the college's name dragged through the mud. And at the same time the coach , Dave Bliss acting as though the loss of Denney was meaningless. The allegations made by him against the player were unfounded . And to this day he has never offered an apology to Dennehy's parents or to Baylor University itself. Dotson is now behind bars having been found guilty of Dennehy's murder . And Bliss himself is no longer involved with college basketball. That to my mind other than Dotson's sentencing is the only meaningful thing to come out of this all.
Scott Drew the current coach of Baylor University. Drew's team is off to fast start in the Big 12 and stand at 4-0, 16-2 overall. picture courtesy of athlonsports.com/bayloruniversity/scottdrew .........
By the actions that'd taken place and the upheaval within the school after this terrible tragedy. The basketball program was all but left for dead. The Bears as they're known , it was thought that it'd take years to resurrect the program and place them back on the pedestal that it had once known. With the advent of Scott Drew coming in and revamping what was an all but dead program. They now seem to be heading back in the right direction. Their record certainly seems to bear this out. At 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the Big 12, it can be said that they're now back in the big time. Now ranked back inside the top 25 of the Coaches' Poll , that of USA Today/ESPN. One can feel that the program is justified in feeling nothing is out of reach when it comes to this season.

At this juncture they're playing some great basketball and the fans are turning to cheer them on and voice their approval. And the players themselves seem to believe in everything that Scott Drew is striving to achieve. They posssess a good nucleus of young players led by Curtis Jerrells. A keen scorer and a player that Drew thinks highly of as a leader on this team. And though being randked at number 24 may not seem a lot in the eyes of many. It's certainly more than many had ever hoped for. At this juncture the only surprise might well be amongst those who'd written the program off. There must've been a deep faith within those inside of the program. And amongst the players there now seems to be something of kindred spirit that has raised this team from where it was just three short years ago.

It can only be hoped that the story for the team will be a happy one of nothing else. And at the end of this current season they'll have done themselves proud. Because in the cold light of day what has happened to this team and the university as a whole shouldn't be wished upon anyone no matter how great or small. It's a true testament to the university itself that they've remained to true to the college ideals of sportsmanship and fair play. Which under the auspices of Bliss it appears were thrown out of the window for other ideals not wanted within the sport itself.

Guys just some boyish sophomoric humor at this juncture . So make of it what you will and enjoy !

You can never get enough of Texada and I'm not about to complain at all. You can well understand my reason why can't you ? As it's self evident wouldn't you say ?
Texada more than makes up for her looks in the most obvious of ways.
Latina Roselyn Sanchez shows you what she's all about and then some !
There's a distinct difference it's said between running a business entity and that of a sports franchise. And nowhere is this apparently more evident than within the confines of motor sports. But at this juncture I'm not so sure.

NASCAR is said to be in a healthy state and its popularity as it now stands has never been as popular amongst its fans as it is at present. There's been some discord amongst some fans but in no way is it meant to be an overall indictment of the sport. There's as always a perfunctory acceptance that at times not everything will be to the convenience of the fans. But this is something that happens within all sports.

In the space of a decade NASCAR has become the most fan friendly entertainment and watched sport by way of overall attendance. It's a multi billion dollar enterprise that encompasses a wide ranging variety of entities. All of this is ran under the auspices of the France family and its subsdiaries and other cross holdings. The tentacles of NASCAR cover a wide array of the sport's horizon. But it is the prestige of the Sprint Cup series that brings it , its highest visibility to the public and its fan base. Major corporate sponsors line up to have their names attached to the various teams within the upper echelons of the sport. And those corporate behemoths read like the who's who of corporate America.

And the teams and the drivers have now become the darlings of Madison Avenue. The more prominent drivers are and have become an advertizer's dream. Dale Earhardt Jr, Jimmie Johnson , Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart can now earn more off the track by way of endorsements than winning on the track. And that has not been to the detriment of their teams or the sponsors either. And it has helped that they're perceived as winners on and off the track. Maybe not so in the case of Dale Jr however ? As he's still yet to emulate his father and win a championship. But be that as it may it's the drivers that everyone comes to see and adore. The race vehicles are secondary to the events themselves.

There now seems to be an ominous cloud over the sport as the economy faces a volatile period of uncertainty. And it certainly doesn't help that the big three domestic auto manufacturers seemingly face a financial morass ahead of them. Their balance sheets overall aren't all that healthy , despite what we're told to the contrary. And they face an uphill battle with regard to their foreign counterparts as to competitiveness and sales within the domestic market. But what if anything has to be unnerving for the sport could well be the fact that its biggest sponsor Sprint is now facing a severe financial crisis. The telecommunications giant is losing subscribers at an unprecedented rate and at the same time will be laying off a large part of it workforce in order to save money . That initself may well be a good thing at this juncture. But it's liable to send an ominous sign to the hierarchy within NASCAR.
Team owner Rick Hendrick seen here with head engineer Darian Grubb during preseason testing at Daytona Int'l Speedway. picture courtesy of ap/photo/Rheinhold Matay ............
With an economy said to be in the throe's of recession one can only wonder what the anticipation will be amongst some of the more notable corporate sponsors and how it may well adversely affect the sport. Contractual obligations being what they are it's clear that some sponsors are liable to uproot themselves within the sport should things become worse for them in the foreseeable future. And for the Sprint Corporation and NASCAR that could prove to be ominous. The business relationship between the two entities has been extremely profitable and equitable in many ways. But for how long can Sprint keep its end of the bargain as of now ? It seems only a matter of time before we might hear of rumblings between the two. Because in all probability Sprint may well look to extricate itself from its agreement to continue to sponsot the Cup Series. And although there may well be a number of corprorate suitors who'd be willing to take over from Sprint. Would they be willing to pay NASCAR's asking price ? That's the question that a willing sponsor would have to be asking at this juncture .
Kevin Harvick and his team are seen here in preparation at Daytona Int'l Speedway. picture courtesy of afp/getty images/.............
In an economic turndown budgetary belts are titghtened just like within a home. And the sponsors are looking to get the biggest ban*g for their buck when it comes to their advertizing dollars and high profile visibility. This may well not only affect the business side as to the operation of NASCAR. But it'll certainly give it some cause for concern not only within its hierarchy but for the teams also. Because there's bound to worries amongst not only the larger teams within the sport but also the smaller teams and those who operate on a shoestring budget and under the graces of the sponsors. Results counts but it's the money spent by the teams that flows from the coffers of the sponsors that in the determines their success.

Boxing has been around now for well over one hundred years. And yes there've been fatalities in and out of the ring. But yet there are those who decry the sport of mixed martial arts. Many see it as an affront to human decency . Whilst others glorify in it with regard to the depraved indifference shown between the competitors.

I see no difference between the pugilistic virtues between a man wanting to knock the other out with his fists , albeit that he's wearing 8oz gloves. Whilst in the sport of mixed martial arts the fighters there are allowed to use their feet , knees and elbows in contact. That being said as huge as the sport has now become within the mainstream. There are still cries for it to be banned. Well if you're of that opinion you're entitled to it.

But I'd suggest you take a look at the sport of boxing and see how corrupt it has become over the years. What was once a sport of gentlemen has now been mired in corruption. And it's got to a point that it's being run by promoters who dictate the terms to the various international governing bodies as to how the sport ought to be ran. And despite the competitiveness between the various bodies therein. There seems no end to the collusion between them to keep the status quo. The IBF, WBA , WBC and WBO aren't in the least bit concerned with the health or wealth of their fighters. For them it's become nothing more than being abiut the money at the end of the day. Neither body as yet have seen fit to have in place any sort of pension plan or outright assistance for the fighters. But yet they're openly concerned about the misuse of illecit substances by the fighters. A culture that as of late that has become prevalant within the sport.

Within the MMA and in particular under the auspices of Dana White of the UFC. We've seen that particular organization take a proactive step in dealing with some of the many issues that the sport faces. Albeit that now White is under a great deal of pressure to become more flexible in dealing with many of the top stars within the sport. As they continue to come under a seriously mounted challenge from new arrival promoter and organization M1 Global. The supremacy of UFC is now being challenged as to offers the best by way of entertainment. And the very fact as to who's prepared to see the sport grow and at the same time keep the public's appetite unabated.
Fedor Emialanenko (L) seen here grappling with Mark Coleman at the O2 Arena in London. picture courtesy of Dreamstage Entertainment.....
White for his part was there almost at the very start of the explosi0n of the sport. Having left HBO sports programming to head up the fledgling organization UFC. It has now become a multi million dollar behemoth that seems to be on the verge of surpassing the sport of boxing in its popularity amongst young men. Women too seem to be aligning themselves to the sport. And many of the more prominent male fighters now have their own legions of female fans. And it appears to be now the place to be seen as a celebrity whenever there's a mjor title fight on in the haven of Las Vegas. The worldwide appeal of the sport is now widening. Beyond these shores it's now become a staple in Europe and the Far East. And in South America where the name Gracie is legendary. There's a stable of fighters that've left those countries to make their fame and fortune here in the United States.
Liddell raises his arms in victory after defeating Silva in a title bout at UFC 79. picture couresy of ap/Jae C Hong...............
At this juncture it should come as no surprise to many that one sport is on the rise the other is definately on the wane. The fact of the matter is the top fighters and title holders fight so infrequently. And at the same time many of these bouts are out of the reach of the public as they're mainly screened as pay per view events. UFC and M1 Global tend to take a different approach to this . Often mixing title bouts with a great support card and not overcharging the viewing public in the process. And when it comes to the safety and well being of their fighters. It becomes their utmost concern in more ways than one. Medical practitioners are always on hand. And now the fighters themselves have becomed unionized and parlayed their power to make demands of the governing bodies. That in many cases have been willingly met. Not so when it comes to the sport of boxing however. They're at a standstill and they seem to be going in the opposite direction to their upstart rivals. And that direction it'd appear to be is down !

We oughtn't be surprised by some of the nonesensical things that are said by commentators or even journalists as a whole. Even when it can be profane or just downright inciteful . The Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman in her expediency may well have went too far in responding to a question from her co-anchor Nick Faldo.
Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman . picture courtesy of ap/photos/........
Her stating that some of the younger members of the PGA Tour ought to get together to lynch golfer Tiger Woods was about as stupid and insane a comment one would want to hear. Whether or not it was meant in jest . The statement as it is shouldn't have been made. Political correctness or not should we tolerate that sort of behavior even when it's supposedly meant as a light hearted quip or gesture ?
Nick Faldo on air personality with the Golf Channel. picture courtesy of scoregolf/ getty images/Richard Heathcote ...........
And although Tilghman has since offered a profound and sincere apology to the player. Which has been supposedly been accepted by Woods through his agent. It leads me to believe that some of these commentators at times do believe that they're above the fray. And though Faldo , himself was slow to respond to the response of his co anchor. I wonder what he himself must've thought of her comments ?
Woods seen here with his wife Elin Nordegren . picture courtesy of ap/photo/sports/golf/tigerwoods.........
As charming as Tilghman comes across as a personality in doing her job I do understand that she was trying to bring some levity to the situation. But at that juncture it surely wasn't the appropriate thing to say. Lynching as an action brings back a shameful past to the climate of this country and to the countless number of people who subjected to this action. Especially in light of the civil rights movement and during slavery. But being an edcuated person one would've thought that Tilghman would know this. But then again being on air personality covering sports doesn't mean you've got to be all that intelligent it would appear.
The action taken by The Golf Channel against Tilghman is that they've suspended her. And they too have offered their own apologies to Woods for the comment Tilghman made. Unfortunately for us all we've now got the repugnant Al Sharpton opining on this topic. Here's a man who in his time has been abrasive and just as idiotic when literally casting his own strong opinions and comments on a variety of topics . Not once have I ever heard him apologize for having said something that could be deemed defamatory. But then again I could be wrong ? But I very much doubt it ! It's not necessarily what you say but how you say that delineates whether or not you're right or wrong in some contexts. But to my mind if you've got nothing to say that's going to make any sense. Then it's best not said at all !
