For all that's happening and will happen in the NBA this season. There's meant to be a certainty as to what we ought to expect with regard to the season. But that's been laid to rest in some ways because of the spate of trades that've taken place within the Western Conference in the last few weeks.
Perhaps the best center the game has seen over the last thirty years ? Shaquille O'Neal of the Suns. picture courtesy of nbae/getty images/Lance Murphy ........
What was once meant to be a certainty concerning some teams advancing to the playoffs. On appearance that no longer seems to be the case. Shaquille O'Neal moves from the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns. And they're allegedly meant to be a favorite to make it out of the talent laden conference to the NBA Finals. Their play would suggest otherwise at this juncture. As O'Neal has yet to find that synergy with his teammates. GM Steve Kerr still feels that given time Shaq'll become attuned to the ways of his teammates and their play.

If I were a Suns' fan I'd feel that there'd be cause for concern as Shaq has yet to acquit himself adequately on the court and show what he's made of. He lumbers up and down the court as if he's laden down with an elephant on his back. Shaq's becoming more of a liability than anyone is willing to admit. As many believe that he's still got what it takes to steer this team ultimately in the right direction. At this juncture though it may well be too early to assess the situation overall. It's becoming clear that if the Suns are not only to make it into the postseason they as a team'll have to play a whole lot better. And Shaq in particular'll have to raise his playing and commitment level once and for all. Shaq has never been known to keep himself at the optimum level of fitness. As his primary force of subduing his opponents ahs always been sheer brute force and intimidation .

It's no longer working as many of the younger players within the league have found Shaq out and he's now become ever so predictable . That being said the other components of the team'll have to pick up the slack when Shaq isn't playing well. And that'll be encumbent on the likes of Nash , Stoudemire , Grant and Diaw. Without their contributions this team'd be lamenting as an also ran within their division.

Tonight we may well be seeing one of the more enticing games of the week thus far. The New Orleans Hornets will square of against the Utah Jazz. And the two teams possess arguably two of the best point guards playing in the league at this juncture. With all due respect to the likes of Jason Kidd and Baron Davis. But in Chris Paul of the Hornets and Deron Williams of the Jazz we're seeing the players that'll epitomize how the game'll be played in the future. Both are undeniably great talents. And their maturity belies their years in the league.

Paul along with West , Stojackovic and Chandler have quietly gone along and posted one of the best records in the Western Conference. And if anything have given notice that their time may well have arrived. Coach Byron Scott has them playing a competitive brand of basketball that's reliant on speed , offense , defense and a great deal of agility . And in Paul he's got a like minded oncourt general who epitomizes hustle and flow. He's become a cold hearted assassin.

The Jazz have been on something of tear but they too know that it's not what you do in the regular season that counts. It's the postseason where the glory is attained and legends and legacies are cemented. An d the play of their own point guard seems to bear this out. He's been the player that the fans have sought since the retirment of Stockton and the departure of Karl Malone. And with power forward Carlos Boozer having another productive year. It seems too that the Jazz have their sights set on garnering a postseason b erth. And with the way things are beginning to shake out in the conference . There no longer seems to be a certainty as to who'll make the postseason let alone win their respective divisions.

The battle between the two of the more quintessential young point guards within the league ought to be something to watch. As neither'll want to back down. And both are equally willing to show their offensive prowess on the floor. To determine who is the better of the two would be akin to trying to split an atom particle. They're both equally as good as one another to my mind. The difference between them is that finite. I'm not a betting man as those days are long gone and behind me now. But even I wouldn't to place a wager as to who is the best amongst the two of them. Suffice to say I'll leave it for the fans out there to decide. All I know is that I know good basketball when I see it. And these two and the way that they play are the epitome of it at its very best.

I for one am hoping to watch them both contest what'll definately be a very entertaining game. And as to who'll win is anyone's guess at this juncture. Suffice to say that these two teams have been playing the sort of entertaining game that draws fans back to the arenas. And that if anything is what the NBA is all about at the end of the day.
Well the NFL combine came and went in four days. And there at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis many of the top college talent were out through the paces by NFL scouts and coaches with GM's watching along with a cadre of press reporting their every move. Say nothing of which many of agents were hyping up their clients.

There'll obviously be a number players that'll have done well for themselves by moving up the depth charts of many of the coaches and GM's in the process. And there'll be a number of players that'll done some harm to their prestige either by not participating or in effect not performing well enough. That being said what do we really learn from this exercise ? A battery of tests won't effectively tell us whether or not a player'll succeed in the NFL. Coaches and GM's alike will no doubt rely on game film to see that and no doubt the interviews that took place will predicate what decisions will be made by them on draft day. No amount of testing at the end of the day will determine what we're being told.
LSU's Glen Dorsey . Commonly believed that he'll no doubt be taken as a top 5 pick. picture courtesy of images/google search/google.com/lsu/glendorsey .........
And the press themselves are out there telling us what we ought to expect and who's making a good showing. It's like being told by a car salesman once you've stepped into the showroom that the car you desire looks good . But in reality until you get behind the wheel yourself and get a feel for the vehicle you're not going to make that outlay in purchasing that vehicle. And the process is no different when it comes to NFL combine. Wonderlic Test and all that's meant to suggest , it's the interview process that really gives the coaches anf GM's and owners an insight into the player's insight and psyche. Offcourse they'll know what it is that they each require of the draftees that they're liable to take as each round unfolds on draft day.
The speculation as to who'll be taken is of interest to everyone . And for the press and fans alike it's something of a rite of passage as the supposition begins. Darren McFadden, Chris Long, Glen Dorsey, Matt Ryan , Andre' Woodson or any number of others may well fit that team's bill. But I'd hazard a guess that none of us really know who's likelty to be taken number one overall. We all have our choices as to who that should be. But in all honesty would you be surprised if the person you chose wasn't taken #1 ?
Darren McFadden of Arkansas. picture courtesy of athlonsports.com/mcfaddendarren ..........
And as much as many us of may well have differing views on the process and what it determines overall. It's allegedly the best system that assesses a player's talent and worth that the NFL has. To the keenest of observers and all of the laymen come draft day. It can be said when we're watching the process unfold , we know doubt think of ourselves as a coach or GM trying to outdo each of the other thirty one teams within the NFL. There'll be winners and losers as the process unfolds. There may well be one or two draft day surprises that take place along the way with one or two trades that'll evolve. We might even decry our team for making an idiotic pick or trade. And for the players taken in the first round there'll be an abundance of fame , wealth and hopefully success awaiting them in the process.
Mike Hart of Michigan picture courtesy of search/googl images/google.com/mike hart .......
The lesser lights of the draft we're told are taken in the lower rounds. But it's been said that's where normally some of the more tangible assets that can be found in those rounds of the draft. And it'd be remiss to think otherwise. So many players that've gone on to find success have been taken in the lower rounds of the draft. It's not meant to be a scientific process. If anything it's more hit or miss in many of the cases. But when a franchise strikes gold it can be said no one is more happier than the coach or GM. The fans'll celebrate too as they may feel that it means a change in their team's fortunes. And for a team that's been mired in mediocrity the difference in making the right pick may well mean the determinination as to that team's fortunes for the next four or five years at best, or possibly less. And thoug there have been times where the pick to turns out to be a bust . But at the end of the day it'll be about the more prudent decisions being made by the teams on the day of the draft.

Not that I'm averse to athletes taking up another career once they've retired from their chosen profession. Some have been successful and other have been mired in mediocrity with regard to a second career beyond their competitive days on the field.

Recently I had the pleasure of seeing once again the remake of the football drama /comedy The Longest Yard. The film starred Adam Sandler , Chris Rock , James Cromwell , Courtney Cox-Arquette, Burt Reynolds , Cloris Leachman and array of former NFL stars. Sandler in the movie reprises the role of Paul Crew . Crew for those of you are old enough to remember the original movie was played by none other than Burt Reynolds himself. This time around however Reynolds though having aged visibly wasn't the star of this particular vehicle. His role was that of the coach of the team that was made up of convicts that were to play the prison's semi professional team.
Brian Bosworth seen here in the foreground portraying a prison guard by the name of Gardner in the movie The Longest Yard. picture courtesy of images/yahoo/com/movies/thelongestyard......
But my reason for this particular piece wasn't to center on the movie itself but to really cover the role played in it by one of the former NFL players . Who it can be said was known at the height of his career for what many thought he was capable of. But he certainly didn't live to the hype heaped upon him. The player in question is none other than former Sooner Brian Bosworth. It can be said that at the height of his college career Bosworth may well have been one of the most outspoken and narcissistic individuals in all of collegiate sports. A two time Butkus Award winner and graduate of Oklahoma with a degree in business management. It could be alluded to that much was expected of Bosworth. A gifted athlete with a propensity for dishing out pain.
Bosworth seen here in a Seahawks' uniform one it can be said that he didn't exactly wear with great honor. picture courtesy of ap/photo...
Bosworth it can be said was of the belief that he was amongst the very best of the best to have played the game at his position. But that notwithstanding it can be argued that he failed to live up to the praise and accolades that were heaped upon him during college. Once in the NFL , having been drafted by the Seattle Seahawks there was really little of tangibilty that came out of his tenure up in the northwest with the franchise. His college was curtailed with him having been kicked off the University of Oklahoma team for testing positive for steroids use amongst other serious infractions. The Seahawks may well have saw something in his abilities but it never materialized once he entered the fray of the NFL.
Former Oakland Raider Bo Jackson . picture courtesy of cachimages/bojackson.....
The one thing that we know about Bosworth was that once on the field he'd either be a liability to his team or on the rare occasion that he played exceptionally well. He'd show that he was a more than capable athlete. But those occasions were all too rare for the Seahawks to profit from this productivity and play. Ans nowehere was this more evident than when the Seahawks faced the Oakland Raiders in a game that was nationally televised . There Bosworth would meet his tormentor on that night. Raiders' running back Bo Jackson would prove that he was all that was said of him and more. And for Bowsorth would prove to be a painful night for him and one of infamy. Highlights are reran of Bowsorth's failures on the night but none more so than when he was literally pile driven into the ground by Jackson in a memorable moment from the game itself. The run itself would produce one of a litany highlights from Jackson's career. But the run run as it's sometimes known is memorable for those who witnessed it live , as too for the audience that watched it there in their homes.
Bosworth seen here from his role in the movie Stone Cold . His role was that of Joe Huff aka John Stone. picture courtey of imdb.com/movies/stonecold.......
Bosworth's brief two year stint in the NFL was a hard learnt lesson on his path. He left the league having suffered several niggling injuries. But it was a shoulder injury that forced his hand eventually that led him to forego that career. He languished as a cast off off from the NFL . But pursued a career in Hollywood as an action star. Whatever that's deemed to be I'm not quite clear. Suffice to say his portrayals on screen were almost comical as many of displays were on the field during his playing career in the NFL . For Bosworth life may well have been just one big game. But his talent was wasted because of his sheer lack of commitment to his craft on and off the field.

This time it's not for all the marbles but it might as well be. It'd appear that upstart MMA promoter Mark Cuban and billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks has filed a lawsuit in the US District Court in Dallas , Texas against Zuffa LLC the parent company of UFC.

The implementation of the federal suit surrounds the validity of the contract of onetime fighter Randy Couture. Couture is allegedly still under contract with UFC. Albeit that Couture has stated that he'd retired from UFC and would seek not to fight for the foreseeable future. However there is now a chance that Couture would like to return to the ring and it's said that a big money fight is being arranged where he'd meet Fedor Emialanenko. The ramifications of this suit isn't lost on Zuffa and UFC , who contend that Couture apart from his contract of employment also has a none compete clause within the contract. Something that Couture maintains was never part of the contract signed .
Dana White CEO of UFC a wholly owned subsidiary of Zuffa LLC.
The suit was bought by Cuban's cable provider entity HD Net that's now promoting its own presence as a promoter of mixed martial arts bouts. Though HD Net's presence isn't in a large number of homes across North America . It could be said that the exposure gleaned from its fledgling concern as a promoter could provide it with the added exposure it needs if it's able to find a niche within the already burgeoning market. Mixed Martial Arts is now dominated by two large entities at present. And it's become a multi billion dollar concern by way of revenues and merchandizing alone. Say nothing of which their PPV events are garnering an ever larger audience with each promotion shown via cable or satellite.

It's appear that neither party is prepared to give way with regard to this measure . And for Zuffa and UFC this may well dictate the fortunes of the company and its existence . As it can be deemed that should Cuban prevail in this lawsuit it could well lead the way for other disatisfied fighters within the UFC's stable to review their situtation within its orgainzation. It's long been known that UFC has sought to arrange what'd deem to be the biggest money bout the genre has seen since its inception. Emialanenko has let it be know that he was willing to fight Couture at anytime and anywhere in the world.

Before this event can even take place it'd seem the bearings of the outcome will first have to be adjudicated within the US legal system. That's something we're now beginning to see happen all too often. Instead of the situation being dealt with by all the parties concerned in an amicable manner outside the confines of a courtroom.
If it's one thing that we're clear with concerning Cuban is that he doesn't suffer fools gladly and he wouldn't be going ahead with this suit. If he didn't feel that it was warranted and there was justification for his action. At the heart of it when all said and done is Couture's right to practice his profession as he sees fit without being entangled by contractual obligations. Obligations that were placed in order to deny him is rights as a performer but at the same time gives UFC and its parent to dictate their own wishes and above all ensures their overall financial benefit.
It'd appear that on the face of it that the English Premier League isn't happy with its presence. It's now set on world domination in terms of its brand globally. Not that there's anything wrong in that whatsoever. If the NFL and NBA can seek to market its product in such a way. Then why not the Premiership.

In terms of real talent it's arguable that it now possesses the best league in the world. And in some instances it can be said that some of the best soccer being played in confined to what's happening within the EPL. But at that juncture I'd have to digress away from what it is that they're now trying to do. I'm not against adding another game to the teams' schedules as it now stands. What I'm totally against is them being played abroad in various parts of the world. It becomes a logistical nightmare for a start. And in some cases it can lead to where it'll lead to unforeseen problems.
Phillipe Senderos of Arsenal celebrates his goal scored against Blackburn Rovers in a Premiership league match.
I know that in an ever growing market where success means everything one has to go out and seek new opportunities and consumers of your product. But the popularity of the sport isn't in question here. What is in question is the implicit greed of the Premiership and its masters. Which in this case are the clubs themselves. It says nothing of which that they're selling the fans of the league domestically short on intellect. The fans domestically have followed their teams expediently. Say nothing of which they've spent their hard earned cash to follow them up and down the country.
Manchester Utd boss Sir Alec Feruson greets his rival Sven Goran Eriksson of Manchester City in the fabled old Manchester derby rivalry between the two clubs. The game itself also commemorated the Munich Air disaster of 6th February 1956. picture courtesy of getty images/Paul Ellis.....
That being said what does that tell us about the ambitions of the league overall ? Dominance is one thing but at what cost to the fans domestically ? Are they now meant to follow in pursuit of their teams when they go abroad to play what's deemed to be a home fixture ? Say nothing of which we've yet to be told in what parts of the world these games'll take place. A game between Chelsea and Tottenham that'd normally be played at either team's home ground could take place in of all places Los Angeles , California or in Duba in the United Arab Emirates for all we know. And there's not much that the fans can do about it. Voicing your disapproval would be one thing. But I sincerely doubt that the league , its officials or the clubs would be all that willing to listen. Especially if the league is alluding to the fact this will lead to a financiall windfall for the teams. This has nothing to do with popularizing the brand of the league as much as it has to do with overall greed on the path of the Premiership.
Ryan Babel of Liverpool battles Juliano Belleti of Chelsea in a Premiership match played at Stamford Bridge. picture courtesy of getty images/ Shaun Botterill......
The Premiership as it now stands makes billions of dollars worldwide in terms of broadcast rights and merchandizing. And with each year those revenues rise exponentially. It's not as if they're crying out for new revenue streams at all. Fans are able to see the premiership league games worldwide even when it's delayed due to the fact of time differences. As a fan I'm not against preseason friendlies or preseason tournaments between Premiership teams being played abroad. But I am against regular season games being upheaved and played elsewhere just for the sake of earning more dollars , euros or whatever else my way of money that the league feels that it can extort from those willing to pay to see the teams play. It sends a telling message to the fans of the game domestically in so many ways. And its something that I never thought I'd witness as a fan of the league and that of a team.
Peter Crouch of Liverpool rises above Chelsea's Ricardo Carvalho during the team's 0-0 draw in a Premiership game at Stamford Bridge. picture courtesy of getty images/Mark Thompson .........
We've seen it happen within the NBA and the NFL but it certainly doesn't need to happen within the English Premiership League at this juncture if ever. Soccer as its come to be come to be known worldwide has its own unique identity and that of the nations that play it. The leagues within Europe and further afield encompass much of what is good about the sport. And for the Premiership to feel that in order for it to feel that it can garner further popularity would be something of a backward step if this idea were to gain momentum and in effect take place.

The popularity of the NFL and NBA notwithstanding the Premiership doesn't have much to worry about other than appearing to greedy for its own good. Let me know if you're in agreement with this by posting your own comments or if you feel that it's a futile exercise by the league itself. I'll look forward to reading your comments.
