As for the pretense that the Suns has what it takes to win it all. Based on yesterday's evidence of their display against the Dallas Mavericks I'm inclined to think not. They showed that they've not got the discipline needed to close out a game when it's all on the line.
Amare Stoudemire of the Suns dunks over the Mavericks' defenders. picture courtesy of nbae getty images/Jesse Garrabant .......
You''ve got to commend the Mavericks for sticking in there and showing the Suns how things are done properly. I was originally of the belief that the Mavericks had no heart , leadership skills and that they were afraid when placed under a great deal of pressure. They showed me otherwise in their all too well executed game down the stretch of the fourth quarter leaving the Suns with the unenviable task of having to look at themselves in the mirror after this defeat.
Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks moves the ball upcourt in the game against the Suns. Dallas defeated the Suns 105-98 in the game with Nowitzki scoring 32 pts for Dallas. picture courtesy of nbae getty images/Bob Garrabard .....
In allowing the Mavericks to come back from and erase a 13 pt deficit in the 4th quarter of a game showed that the Suns aren't just a work in progress. But that they've still got a hell of a lot of learning to do. That in of itself shows us all the reason why the Western Conference has been so competitive this season , as teams contesting a playoff berth have to scrap for every win even when things are against them. It'd appear that the lessons being taught by coach Mike D'Antoni if the Suns aren't being listened to by his team.
Shaquille O'Neal and Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns an experienced duo who between them have over 20 years of playing experience in the NBA. Somehow it was all for nought against the Mavericks. picture courtesy of nbae getty inages/ Jesse D Garrabant.......
For all that has and is being said of the O'Neal trade and what it does for the team. If it's meant to be addition by subtraction then there may well have been a missing piece to the equation. For all of Shaquille's wiles and efferfescent humor if he's not prepared to show his own leadership qualities and add it to how the team plays then it'll have been to no avail. He may well have to defer to the likes of Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire but that shouldn't stop him showing his teammates what he's still capable of doing.

The intangibles that O'Neal is meant to bring to the Suns is his leadership and winning experience. As of yet it hasn't rubbed off on his teammates. And when it comes to overall discipline oncourt it appears that we're only seeing glimpses of it from the team in sporadic spells. This is something that they certainly can't afford to do in the playoffs. Difference maker or not this isn't just about one man it's actually about a team and how it acquits itself during the playoffs. If there's nothing of substance there then team won't fare well.

For the Mavericks they've shown that with the return of Nowitzki there's the belief that the ship may have been righted. His return brought a rejuvenance to the team and perhaps a sense of purpose. But with the remaining games of the regular season still to be played we can't really know how much or little they'll have to offer . Suffice to say that this win will go a long way in giving them a great deal of confidence. For the Suns it can't helped their situation overall. If anything it's given time to pause for thought and to rethink their strategy. Going down in defeat like this can't have done much for their confidence at all.
The fight within the conference for postseason playoff berths remains a tight race with the seedings and how one finishes making a great deal to each team . As it'll determine who they'll face in the opening rounds. And with that in mind which team's position would you rather be in ? The Mavericks or the Suns ?
Well it's finally here and all is meant to be good in and with the world. As the baseball season starts in earnest as of today. Judging by the unprecedented success of the Nationals' opening game and the fans appreciation of the President throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. One can only summize that the season either'll be dismal or it'll be one for the ages. Hopefully it'll be the latter ?

And though much is expected this season as it unfolds. One has to wonder whether not the game can continue to withstand all of the scandals that it now seems to be engulfed. From the nevernending Bonds' saga to that now of Roger Clemens and his jousts with Congress and that of his former trainer Brian McNamee. And whilst this is all going on there's still the ineptitude of the major league baseball hierarchy to contend with.
Commissioner Allan 'Bud' Selig of MLB. A prayer for the dying or for the living ? I'll leave it for you to be the judge of that. picture courtesy of mlb.com/bud selig.........
Were if not for the fact of the Presidential nominational process I'd find watching the inner workings of Selig's organization less comical. But when we're talking about politicians here and is there anything that can top their inanity ? Other than that of the hierarchy of baseball and the stupidity that they contrive to find themselves in. Render untoCeasar what is Caeasar's but let us not forget that we can be critical also. Whislt Selig and the hierarchy of baseball hides behind the facade of the Mitchell Report and the fact that there's no real culpability on the part of the owners , trainers or coaches. We're led to believe that only the players are at fault. Pertinent questions have never been asked of the owners or coaches. And they've just been left to plod along as usual. At the same time you've got the politicians within Congress trying on appearance to make themselves out to be far more intelligent than we ought to give them credit for being. But that'll be left for discussion for another day.

Much is expected from the New York Mets this season. What with their signing of two time Cy Young award winner Johan Santana. One can only but hope that they don't replicate their implosion of last season. Where they went out like a whimper surrendering the lead and the NL East crown faster than it took the French troops to surrender to the Germans in World War II. They ought to be rejuvenated and up to the task but I dare say that it'll take a lot more than Santana to turn this ship around. Willie Randolph as coach and GM Omar Minaya will be under the microscope once again. And anything but play in the postseason will be considered to have been failure for the team.

The same could be said of their crosstown rivals the New York Yankees. But the buffoonery being shown by new installed head honcho by way of his patriarch leads me to believe that the fans of the Yankees'll be in for more of the same as usual. Hank Steinbrenner's jealousy of the success of the Boston Red Sox is that of a child who's had his marbles taken away from him while playing in a sandbox. He'll whine and tell us all that is wrong with Sox and their supporters whilst not realizing that the Yankees have some real problems of their own. An aging staff and no real leadership on the team other than that of their golden boy Derek Jeter. Do you think A-Rod ought to be taking note also ? Leadership afterall is meant to come in all guises. But as far as Alex Rodriguez is concerned it's all lost on him ! Just show him the money and he'll play !

And what of the small market teams and how are they percieved to fare this season ? Well if last year was anything to go by then it's hoped that it'll be extremely well. The Diamondbacks, the Rockies and Brewers proved that through sound scouting and the acquisition of young players that are willing to give it their all, you can succeed without having to spend boatloads of cash. And it'd appear that even the current World Series Champions the Boston Red Sox are beginning to realize this. They've stayed pat but at the same time have found themselves with an abundance of young talent that ought to set up to be in a positio to contend for years to come. A fact not lost it'd appear on the Yankees' ownership. Hence the often infantile remarks and behavior coming from Hank Steinbrenner.
For me however this season won't be just about what to expect from the teams but about the direction in which baseball intends to go. As it is they've made enough errors and misdirections that one would've thought it had been driven off a cliff. Were it not for the ineffectual and hamfisted way that the sport is being ran. I'd be liable to think that it was being directed and driven by a blind man. The fact of the matter is that Bud Selig isn't blind but what is abundantly clear to us all is that he is indeed stupid. As too are the owners who still rally behind him and consider his leadership effective. But hey this is just one man's opinion that doesn't necessarily needed to be taken on face value. I think though that it ought to count for something considering that we're all meant to be fans of the game aren't we ?
OK let's see it's been sixteen years since I left the UK to come to America to make a new life for myself. And in that time I've been divorced and have been involved in several relationships . None of which I might add were ever meaningful or fulfilling for that matter. In retrospect it tells me that not much in my life has changed. It tells me either the person I'm looking for has to be someone whose got an uncanny resemblance and the persona of my ex wife. Or the fact that I'm limiting my choices when it comes to the women that I've been involved with since my divorce.

That being said I've been involved with the same female for the last 5 years. And though she's considerably younger than I, we're able to make things work on many levels. There's the trust factor and the fact that we're upfront and clear as far as the open comunication is concerned. Unfortunately that wasn't the case in my marriage. Comminication is the key to a successful relationship and knowing when is the right time to walk away instead being confrontational.

The same can be said when it comes to the sport of soccer. And in particular that of the career of one of England's most celebrated players though not necessarily its most gifted . On Wednesday David Beckham gained his 100th cap for his country joining a select few players with the distinction of having received that honor. With that being said I felt it was a step in the wrong direction. Especially if the national side is looking to build for the future. Beckham's best days are behind him and the only reason he gained this honor was as a way of saying thank you for the services rendered over the course of his international career.

As England captain he led this team with great aplomb but it can be said that he never led them with a great deal of distinction. There were many times were this team was found wanting and Beckham was nowhere to be found when it came to his leadership qualities. In many ways I felt that Beckham used his role as captain of the national side as a ways and means of furthering his financial status if nothing else. And over the course of his career as an international when it's all said and done can you remember any outstanding moments where you can state you proud of this team under his guidance ?

Much of the blame for the country's international woes aren't all Beckham's. And it can be said the real blame does lie elsewhere , as it lays in the hands of the FA and its hierarchy. They've been woefully inept in dealing with the inefficiency of the national side. And when it came to choosing the right candidate for the position there were very shortsighted and obfuscated much of the responsibility of being good custodians of the game not only on the domestic front but internationally also.

In light of this the team under the capable hands of current coach Fabio Capello now has look forward and not become myopic and look back to its past if it is to progress. Whether the choice of Beckham was made out of emotion rather than rewarding him on merit. To my mind it was very much unwarranted and just smacked idiocy. Beckham hasn't played a meaningful game of merit in a number of months and if anything his form and playing career as it now stands is on the decline. And though he's been able to parlay this into a multi million dollar contract to ply his wares in the United States playing in the less than competitive MLS. One can reason that the main purpose of this effort is only to further burgeon his already sizeable bank account.
The customary photo is taken of the team in this case the national team gathers onfield for the cursory picture. picture courtesy of reueters/Fabien Therioux.....
Whatever Beckham once had to offer the game domestically as well as internationally is no longer there. His game has markedly declined along with his zeal. And those momentary glances of stupendous skills are all but a thing of the past and have become an aberration.

If the national side is to make progress then the first exercise is to cut ties with the dead weight on their roster of players. Their woefully inept display in the Euro qualifiers was an indication of this. But yet we're seeing the same old retreads being brought back as some sort of final experiment. What is there to learn when you know of the team's frailties as it is already ? And though this was a freindly against one of the qualifiers for Euro 2008. The result and display by the team did little to allay the fears of the fans as to how the difficult the process'll be to get back to the heights we've become accustomed to.

It would've best spent if Capello had fielded a side of fresh faced members and assess the team on their display. With the qualifications for the 2010 World Cup just around the corner this'd be the time Capello start as off as he means to go on. And not retrench himself in the ideology and ways of his predecessors, in particular Steve McClaren and Sven Goran Erickson. The latter brought a great deal of ingnominity to the national side with his behavior and lack etiquette. And as to his successor Steve McClaren , the less said about his tenureship the less we need to know.
Beckham takes a corner in the game played against France. picture courtesy of getty images/Shawn Botterill ...........
Now is the time for the national side and Capello to proceed forward and not look to the past. There are things that we can learn from our past . But what we glean from it ought to make us better not regress as it now appears that we're doing. If we go down the same path once again then we're certainly doomed for failure. And with that as an advent is there any really any need to support te national side ? Capello do the right thing and just say good bye to Beckham and others who're now deemed expendable once and for all. It's the right and only thing to do at this juncture .
You know there's something wrong when a former player is caught in the cross hairs of an owner's rant as to his team's malaise. It can't have been missed by anyone who's noticed the itinerant rantings of Timberwolves' owner Glen Taylor and much to the chagrin of others over how he felt that the franchise was let down by Kevin Garnett.
In happier times Taylor seen here with former player Kevin Garnett. picture courtesy of nba.com/minnesotatimberwolves/kevingarnett .....
Less I'm mistaken Taylor and GM Kevin McHale all but lost all of the goodwill the franchise built up within the Minneapolis area when they agreed to trade the much beloved star to the Boston Celtics. And though this young team is struggling to determine a path for itself within the league. I find it somewhat infantile for Taylor to be now criticizing the player. Was the time that Garnett spent there in Minnesota not profitable for all concerned ? OK so you didn't so you didn't fulfill your goal of winning an NBA championship. But it wasn't for the lack of trying on Garnett's path during his tenureship there with the T'wolves.

It can be said that though the team has faltered it was of their own making as to the lamentable position that they now find themselves in. As for McHale we've not heard a response from him as to his owner's childlike rant. For Taylor to suggest tht Garnett tanked the season by sitting out 5 games because of an injury is asinine and not deserving of a reply from the player , himself. I suspect that Taylor has forgotten that the roster surrounding the player wasn't all that impressive to begin with. But then that's what you get in a hiree of McHale's supposed pedigree. His assessment of NBA talent is broderline suspect at best and only marginally worse than that of his counterpart in New York. Though we knew off the bat the New York Knicks were going to be terrible this season anyway. As to how bad I don't believe that anyone believed that they'd be this lamentable.

In all honesty though whatever gave anyone the idea that Isaiah Thomas was ever any good as a coach let alone a great assessor of NBA personnel ? Much of the same can be said of McHale himself as he was skirting under the radar of not having to operate in major market in the NBA. The veracity of Taylor's argument is about palpable and palatable as asking someone to take a swift knee to the groin. For the reciever it'll be painful and for the aggressor of the action it only goes to show how infantile they are.

The Twolves' record in the Northwest Division stand at an abysmal 17-50 some 27.5 games behind the Utah Jazz. Only the morbidly moribund Seattle Supersonics has a worse record within the division. But when you're witnessing the play within the division you've only got to appreciate how bad things have become for the likes of the T'wolves and Sonics.
Randy Foye of the T'wolves tries to evade a Grizzlies' player. picture courtesy of nbae/getty images/David Sherman.....
About the only thing that the team has in its favor as of now is that it's youth based and laden with a varying degree of talent. And at the core of its element are Al Jefferson the leading scorer on the team, Randy Foye, Rashard McCants and Corey Brewer. Whether or not coach Randy Wittman can steer this team in the right direction is open to question.
As for McHale he's sitting atop of this curent mess and on appearance his position would seem safe for now. But only Glen Taylor seems to think that much of the franchise's problems seem to stem from what he believes was Garnett's sitting out the final 5 games of the season. Pity that he and McHale didn't think about surrounding Garnett with the talent required to make the team a real contender.
With all the talk of famed golf tutor Butch Harmon dispensing with offering his services to two time major winner John Daly. One can summize that with the advent of this latest debacle in the golfer's episodic and turbulent life. It'd be wise to think that things couldn't get any worse for the golfer. But we'd be remiss in thinking otherwise at this juncture. Daly's demeanor and the alleged drinking with fans at the event played a part in the decision made by Harmon no doubt. That event was the PODS Championship played Innisbrook Golf Course , Palm Harbor, Fl.

Daly's career thus far has been a topsy turvy ride thats known highs and lows . The winning of the British Open at St Andrews in 1995 and his lone major here in the USA, the PGA championship at Crooked Stick in 1991 have been the highs for the often celebrated golfer. The lows have been his multiple marriages and the ensuing divorces. His witnessing of a former wife being indicted by the Justice Department for moeny laundering and racketeering as well as conspiracy to distribute narcotics. All of which would suggest that Daly's life to say the least has been an eventful one. Bouts of alcoholism that he's yet to overcome. But yet he still finds time to play on the PGA Tour ? Albeit with limited success.
Daly seen here on the course at Pebble Beach last year. picture courtesy of afp/getty images/Harry How ......
It'd appear that Daly's love of the game isn't much as compared to his love of alcohol and mingling with the fans. If Tiger Woods is meant to be the much heralded driving force behind the game's renaissance and the hysteria he creates amongst the fans. Then it can be said that Daly is the complete antithesis of what Woods stands for . Woods the consummate professional beloved by the majority of the PGA Tour's players and fans alike. Whereas Daly may well be just seen as the circus act that comes to town whose only purpose is be provide his well intentioned clown's act. It may well be pleasing to some fans who can identify with Daly as their everyman with regard to his status on the tour. And while one would feel that Daly may well be at peace with himself. I can't help but wonder what would've happened if he could just concentrate on the game itself without all of the outside distractions ?

The Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational held in Orlando , and one of the more prestigious events on the Florida swing of the PGA Tour was to be where Daly was suppose to be playing as of yesterday. But having missed a tee time at the pro am he was disqualified by the event's organizers and PGA. As to his excuse for missing the tee time that may well not be explainable. As Daly stated that he'd been misinformed as to his tee time. Highly irregular given Daly's propensity for not always wanting to play even if he's been given a sponsor's exemption. Daly marches to the beat of his own drum and his demeanor is not about to change whatever sanctions are imposed on him by the PGA.
Comical but it no doubt sums up Daly's play as of late ? picture courtesy of upi syndication/Larry Johnson .....
If this a harbinger of things to come for Daly for the remainder of his career. It doesn't seem worthwhile that he participates in a game that has served him so well. When he first burst unto the Tour it seemed that he was just the breath of fresh air that the sport needed. His punishing swings when he tee'd off on the course was something of monsterous brute force. Drives in excess of 300 yds were very much like a walk in the park for Daly. But as quick as his star rose it faded just as quickly. His stunning win of the PGA at Crooked Stick was as welcoming as it was surprising to all those who witnessed it. But with the advent of that victory things all too quickly began to spin out of control Daly. As quickly as he stood at the top of the golf plateau , his fall was just as fast if not more spectacular.
Daly known for his power of the tee. picture courtesy of golfrankindex/images/John Daly ......
And even with the winning of a second major it was apparent that Daly wasn't entirely happy with the notoriety that came with winning. He couldn't be himself. Golf supposedly is a game where its players are always circumspect and thought of as modern day gentlemen. Something that John Daly isn't at all entirely happy portraying as golf may well have been a means to an end for him . Hit a few balls all day long for 18 holes and the respite would be at the nineteenth hole where he could consume as much alcohol as desired. That's the utopia that he sought.
And while no one exactly laments his woes it can be said that he's entirely happy with his all. If nothing else the fans are still there to watch what'll unfold be it good , bad or indifferent. Woods is the Pied Piper of Golf but it's Daly whose become the game's clown prince .
