In light of the US Open tennis tournament now in progress in Flushing, New York. I tought it'd be fun to take a look at the reasons why the women's game has surpassed that of the men's in interest. It's not as if the virtues of the game are any the different. After all the competitiors go out there to succeed to the best of their abilities. But what is it that has made the women's game surpass the men's in interest ?
For years it was said the men's game was on the wane because there were no longer any major rivalries at the top level of the sport. And we didn't exactly lament the passing or retirement of Pete Sampras the alltime major's winner amongst the men whose demanor at times was that of a bespectacled librarian. If anything it was due to the fact the sport had become too repetitive and boring in nature. There was no longer finesse and artistry among the men's game as it was all power and having a booming serve, a suspect volley, weak double fisted backhand and a forcefull forehand to enable the men to compete. With the women they saw a way to get their game back in the forefront with a mix of youthful effervescence and a great deal of sex appeal. Something that would be frowned upon not too long ago. Admittedly the WTA while not acknowledging this is what is going on within their sport has seen fit to let it pass as the sport has gained in popularity across varying demographics. The women themselves have been quick to notice this fact and have gone out of their way to lend themselves to various corporate advertizing and sponsorship as evidenced by players such as Maria Sharapova, Venus and Serena Williams whose names can be seen marketing anything from luxury items such as Louis Vuitton to watches, jewellery , clothes , electronics and cosmetics.
Truth be told 'sex sells ' and nowhere is this more common place than in the market place where women now make up more than 57 % of the purchasing decisions made in the household. So for us men, at times we're left on the outside looking in.

While we lament the loss of Agassi from the world tennis stage we should no doubt be grateful the we've got an almost ready made rivalry in our midst on the men's stage, namely that of Federer and Nadal. Which by the looks of things is what has long been sought on the men's side of the game. Since Nadal's emergence everyone has taken to the tyoung Spaniard with open arms , that is unles you happen to be an opponent facing him on the other side of the net. Already a two time winner of the French Open ans a finalist at Wimbledon this year. The brash Nadal has announced himself to the world as a force to be reckoned with. The female fans of the sport have renewed their interest in tennis and there seems to be a reawakened passion amongst the sport's enthusiasts.

In deferrence to the women who now compete for our attention it would appear that a vast majority of those who are in the limelight , are from the Eastern bloc countries and have avail themselves on us with a great deal of beauty and a vast array of athletic prowess which in no way should negate the contributions of the female tennis players in the West .
Many of the female players that are conversant in another language than that of their native tongue have fully understood the way of the West and the marketing process that goes into making a name. Never was this more self evident than with the marketing of Anna Kournikova , who despite her immense talent and beauty was never able to convert that success off the court to anything tangible on it. The same can't be said of her compatriots Svetlana Kuznetsova , Anastassia Myskina and Maria Sharapova who've long become the spokesperson for various corporate bodies around the world and at the same time have found success oncourt.
The Williams sisters and Sharapova are the endorsement darlings of the tennis world with untold millions paid to them each year for their likeness to be used alongside on anything from cosmetics to jewellery.
