Shannon Elizabeth and Jennifer Tilly are just two of the females that'll be competing at the WSOP tournament in Las Vegas, having already started with the preliminary rounds. The tournament will feature some the world's greatest players from all corners of the world. Those competing include reigning champion Joe Hachem who in winning last year's tournament took home a staggering $7.5 million dollars. Other stars competing are perennial favorites Mike Matusow, Phil Hellmuth,Marcel Luske, Phil Laak, Doyle Brunson,Johnny Chan, Greg Raymer, Phil Ivey , Jennifer Harman and Daniel Legraneau. These are the professional powerhouses of the game who for all intense and purpose have got us enraptured with the game. We go to great lengths to watch a game whenever it's being broadcasted be it on network television or cable tv. The public's fascination with the sport has become so popular that many of the networks have begun to promote and organize their own events. Not wanting to be left out of the commercial explosion of the sport Las Vegas has also taken note. Many of the major casinos now go out of the way to promote the fact that they have house tournaments. And there are now even poker touranment getaways for the avid fan as well as beginners.
Tilly if anything is probably the most popular female celebrity players on the circuit having won celebrity, charity and serious professional tournaments amongst her peers. In 2005 she won a ladies tournament taking home the top prize money of $ 175,000 and a gold bracelet signifying her win. Tilly is also not averse to mentioning that her boyfriend Phil Laak is a prominent player on the tour. Laak otherwise known as the ' Unabomber' because of his unconventional dress and demeanor at the table.
Shannon Elizabeth if anything does not see herself as a serious player but enjoys the atmosphere and camaraderie that a tournament brings. However, watching her play you would not think so as he can be as aggressive as her male counterpart in her play. With that being said it's a pleasant surprise to see these women compete alongside the men and enjoy the fact there's no animosity when playing.
The tournament itself will be all about the 'big boys'.........Brunson, Doyle, Ivey, Hellmuth, Raymer, Hachem and Chan who'll bring an intensity to the game as it's being played. For them winning the most prized tournament in poker is about pride and the bragging rights that goes along with winning. For others it will be the fact that they got to compete with and be with amongst the best that the game has to offer.
Each year that the tournament has been held since its inception in 1970, it has grown to such lengths that the number of competitors will be in excess of 30,000 competing in the prequalifying tournaments for the right or privilege to be seated at the final table. It will take a wise man to pick the winner and in Las Vegas the oddsmakers will be quite willing to take your money if you're willing to beat the odds.
cc Prize Money 2006 totals over $ 45,000,000 with approximately $ 10,000,000 going to the winner
