Justin Gatlin the World and Olympic champoin at 100m faces a lifetime ban after having been found guilty of failing a second positive drug test. The verdict isued jointly by the IAAF and USTAF called for a lifetime ban but was reduced to eight years as Gatlin has chosen to assist both bodies in their investigation into the illecit use of steroids and other illegal substances proliferating the sport.
Whether the action by Gatlin is a sign of showing remorse nobody can ever really know. Because the fact that he chose to lie about his use of illecit substances implies that he's a person of very little moral integrity. As a high profiled track and field athlete he knew that the eyes of the fans as well as the public were upon him. He preached abstinence with regard to the use of drugs and was adamant that he'd never use it. The first failure was due to the fact that he'd been taking a pescribed medicine for a deficit disorder. Unfortunately one of the ingredients contained in the medication included a banned substance. A mandatory suspension was levied against Gatlin and the episode was over.
But what are we to make of this latest act or transgression ? Implicitly Gatlin can't be trusted as he lied about his use but furthermore he perpetrated this lie while he was a champion and that if anything is what is at the heart of the problem. In order to aspire to achieve something approaching greatness doesn't suggest that one has to cheat but it's becoming endemic within the sporting world. Now having been found guilty of a second offense he has chosen to worm his way out of facing mandatory punishment like a guilty individual. Pleaing instead for a lesser term in return for assisting in the investigation of the sport . Perhaps this is his way of showing that he has some redeeming quality left within him.
As the most high profiled athlete to be caught since the demise of disgraced sprinter Ben Johnson in the drug scandal , Gatlin's career is all but over . But the stain that has been cast upon the sport of track and field in the the US is indelible and if anything will deter the most ardent of fans from attending an event.
If Gatlin's assistance can provide the sport with the immediacy that's needed in cleaning it up then his actions might not all be in vain. But as we know the athletes that are liable to be implicated along with their trainers will undoubtedly deny any wrongdoing. What will be made of his apparent betrayal will lead to ramifications that'll cause a shift within the sport.
