Yes the renowned Shawn Kemp is in camp with the Denver Nuggets as an invited none roster free agent. By all accounts the ' Phoenix ' has arisen from the ashes looking quite the part. From a reported 340lbs, Kemp has shedded 75 lbs and is now down to a robust 265 lbs and counting. George Karl, the Nuggets coach is said to be impressed with Kemp's athleticism and ability. No doubt this does not entail Kemp running across to the local Dunkin' Donuts for a quick break between circuit training. I have no doubt that Kemp is serious in his aspirations of returning to the NBA and one wishes him well. But is it worth the risk to the Nuggets in him doing so? For all his trangressions and off the field problems, Shawn Kemp when fit was one the NBA's most explosive offensive forces. His spectacular dunks and resourcefulness around the boards was something to behold. But in the latter part of his career he became a mere shadow of himself, overweight , lazy , unproductive and a malcontent to boot. If Kemp is to resurrect his career then he'll likely have to prove himself to be a team player within Karl's system. By no means is it a guarantee that he'll make unto the Nuggets' roster at the end of the day because Kemp is still fighting those demons from within. His personal life has been an open book for all to see. Drug abuse, marital discord. Divorce , numerous paternity suits and child support payments makes Kemp's life story all the more remarkable that he would consider returning to the NBA. It maybe there that he's able to find solice amongst his fellow NBA cohorts and away from the outside pressures of the game.
