Impressive as De La Hoya was in his destruction of Mayorga , I can't but help wonder where he goes from here. It's not as if he needs the money as it has been said that he's earned close to $225m throughout his career so far. That being said who will determine when his career will come to an end ? De La Hoya has reiterrated that this was to be his penulitimate fight , possibly seeking a title clash with the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. as his last big payday. Somehow this will come to fruition , but I doubt that it will be De La Hoya's last hurrah! This guy has a great deal of pride but doesn't really know when to call it quits. The legacy of his career will be fairly judged and unlike many of his contemporaries he's not made a fool of himself inside the ring. Outside the ring his career has flourished with his considerable business interests. So when is it time to say enough is enough ? We all know the situation that Muhammad Ali found himself in , he couldn't say goodbye to the ring . Although it brought him fame and fortune , it also placed him where he is today a proud but broken man. He has to suffer the indignity of being pointed at by many who will never come to appreciate what a great athlete he once was. To many of us today , who never witnessed Ali in the ring , with his graceful prowess and stunning ability to make his opponents look quite ordinary. All we see is a man who has difficulty in conveying his words to an adoring public. This won't be the outcome for De La Hoya , but should he dare risk it for all the glory ? Youth is on Mayweather's side and his boxing abilities are unquestionable but if ever there were a time for the Golden Boy to hang up his gloves. Now would be that time ! The insatiable thirst of the promoters and fans are going to force the issue , Mayweather will clearly look upon it as the defining moment of his already illustrious career should he enter into the ring and fight De La Hoya . A win secures his place amongst the all time greats , a loss wouldn't tarnish his career as I've already said youth is on his side. But you have to admit, it wets one's appetite for this to happen? Fights of this magnitude don't come along very often. My all time favorite fighter "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler walked away from the fight scene after his fabled loss to Sugar Ray Leonard , which to this day I still think Hagler won. But somehow the judges saw it differently. Hagler walked away with his dignity in tact and rode off into the sunset. Never returning to the ring. Somehow this doesn't befall too many fighters nowadays, as they always yearn for that last one big fight.
