How High Is Too High ?.........

Thursday, February 8, 2007, 03:49 PM EST [NFL .........Football.........]

With  the impending  announcement   that  Wade  Phillips  is  set  to be  the  next  coach  of  the Dallas  Cowboys.    One  has to  wonder  whether   or  not  the  bar  was  set  high  in  Jerry  Jones'  search   for  a  coach.  He  appeared  to  have cast a  net  far  and  wide   in  search  of a  coach   to  take  over from  the  departing  Bill  Parcells.

Wade Phillips, right, takes the podium after being introduced as the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys during a news conference at the Cowboys headquarters in Irving, Texas, Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007.   Wade  Phillips  steps to  the poduim  after being announced  as  the Cowboys'  head  coach  today at a news  conference  at  Cowboys'  headquarters  in  Irving,  Texas.  Phillips  is just the seventh  coach  in the Dallas  Cowboys' history.  picture  courtesy AP/Photo J  Falcone.......

Coordinators  were brought  in  and  hired ,  namely amongst  them was   Jason  Garrett.  Whom  many  feel  will  ultimately get the  job  at   sometime  in the  future.  For the moment  though he'll be a  coordinator  and   an   assistant  coach  as   designated   by  GM ,  Jerry  Jones.

Jason  Garrett  the  newly hired  assistant  coach  and  coordinator  for  the  Dallas  Cowboys.  It's  believed   by many    that  Garrett   is  being  groomed  for the  head  coaching  position and  that  Phillips  was brought  in  to  show  Garrett  the  ropes. picture courtesy of Yahoo/Sports/dallascowboys..

Jones  took   it  upon  himself  to  interview the  likes  of  Cam  Cameron ,  Mike  Singletary , Norv  Turner  ,  and  several  distinguished up  and  coming  young  coordinators and  coaches  for the  position  of  Head  Coach.  But  none of the  applicants  supposedly  fit  the  bill   as  to  what  he  appeared  to  be  looking  for.  That   he  has  hired  Phillips   as the  next  coach   of   the  Cowboys  appears to  be  a  little   bewildering  to most  as  well  as the  fans   of  the   Cowboys.

Cam  Cameron  was  one  of the  many  applicants  interviewed  for the  head  coaching  position but  wans't  hired  by  Jones.   Cameron  has isnce been  made  the coach   of  the  Miami  Dolphins. picture courtesy  of Yahoo/Images/nflsandiegochargers

Former Bears'  great  Mike  Singletary is  just another  of  the  candidates  interviewed  but  somehow  overlooked  as  being  the  right  candidate  for the  postition. picture  courtesy  of  Yahoo/Images/sportsnflmikesingletary........

The  much travelled Norv Turner  who  always  seems  to be  at the  top of  everyone's list the moment  there  happens   to  be a  particular  head  coaching vacancy.  It  seems  retreads  are all  the  rage ! picture courtesy of Yahoo/Images/sportnfl..

Phillips  has  NFL  coaching  experience  but has  never  won  a  playoff  game  in  his  entire  career.  His    career  as   a coach  is  modest  at  best  registering    an  above  .500  at  nine  games  over that    mark at   49-39. For  the last  couple  of seasons  he's  been  an  assistant    to  Chargers'  head  coach  Marty Schottenheimer  as  well  as    the  team's  defensive  coordinator.  What  many   are  questioning  at   this  moment ,   is  why   hire  Phillips  ?    It's  apparently    clear    that  either  Jones  had  a  preconceived   idea   as   to  who  he  wanted  as  his next   coach. Or  the fact   the  bar wasn't raised  high   enough  in  terms    of  the  candidate's  that  he  desired  or    sought  for the  position.

Phillips may  well  be  a  stop  gap measure  whilst   Jason  Garrett  is  being  groomed behind  the    scenes   for   the  position.   As  he  was  presumed  to be  a  favorite  of  Jones   from  the  outset  but     for  the  lack   of  his  overall  coaching   experience.  With   Garrett   now  in  place  within   the  Cowboys'  organisation   where   he'll   learn  the  ropes.   Phillips it is  presumed   will  coach  the  team  whilst passing  on  his  knowledge  to  the  erstwhile  young  novice,  Garrett.    Whether  or not  this  track  taken   by  Jones  proves to be  successful  remains    to  be  seen.    In  the  meantime  no  doubt  star   wide  receiver  Terrell  Owens  may  well  be  voicing  his  opinions  on  this  matter.

The  fact  is  that    also   Phillips  will also  have   to deal   with  the  problematic  Owens    as  well as  a meddlesome  GM,  leads  many  to  believe  that   this  may  well   be  a  short  term  fix,   for  a  long  term  solution. There  were  far more viable  candidates as mentioned earlier   but  this  was  the  path  sought by  Jones.   It  may well  be  doomed  for failure like the tenureships of  Chan Gailey , Dave Campo and  some  might even say  Barry Switzer  despite  having  won a Superbowl.

But these  failures  were  not  only  tied  to   the  coaches mentioned  but  also  to  Jones  himself. As he  hired those  particular  applicants !  Jones  like  Al  Davis  of the Raiders  hasn't  the  wherewithall   to  relinquish  the  reins  of power and  hand  them  over  to  someone  who's  more   knowledgeable   than  him  about  today's  game.  As  he still  looks   to  the  past  glories  as  his  seal  of  approval.   Rather  than  what   has  happened  to  the  franchise  as  of  late.
