Much like a procedural crime drama that's proving to be so popular on television for more than a whole generation. The NBA season will unfold with its own cast of characters and various story lines. And as much as we've found this form of entertainment thoroughly invigorating. We'll no doubt at times find much of it very tedious and boring.

The likes of programs such as Law & Order , CSI , The Closer , Criminal Minds and Shark have proved to be immensely popular amongst their cadre of fans. And the same can be said of the NBA with its own legions of ravenous and rabid fans. As with these hourly crime procedural dramas we're led on an hour of entertaining escapism as we try to deduce the motives behind a crime that's been committed. Much as in the same way we'll sit through the entire regular season of the NBA and try to deduce who'll end up becoming the NBA champions.

The regular season will encompass 82 games that at times will be entertaining or will prove to thoroughly irrelevant to us as fans. As many of us will no doubt have our own ideas as to who we'd know doubt like to see in the Conference Finals as the Finals itself. Much as in the same way that we'll try to deduce the facts and origins behind the crime that's committed on the show and then try to asssess who's guilty and hope that the detectives investigating the crime will come to the same conclusion as us. And for those of you genuine geeks out there. I'm not forgetting fans who liken themselves to real CSI's .

As usual there'll be false trails layed out infront of us in terms of the crime and as much in the same way we'll have our pretenders and contenders. The majority of the pretenders will jump right out of the gate and try to impress with their pedigree and the power of the their play and athleticism in some cases. A similar sort of trail that'll be layed out infront of us by the writers of these shows in the hope that it'll engage us and at the same time have us deducing who the guilty culprit is and their reason behind committing that crime. It has to be said that there's a Perry Mason, Columbo, Lenny Briscoe or CSI Grissom in all of us. And we'd all like to think that we're able to solve the crime that'll be committed. But in reality so few of us are really as good as the detectives or crime scene specialists that we see on tv. Even if they've got to solve the crime within that predetermined time.

As for the contenders they'll come to the fore as the season begins to run its course and the pretenders fall by the wayside because of fatigue or errors. And that's the way the detectives are able to deduce who the guilty parties are as they're prone to make mistakes or underestimate the ability of their adversaries.

The Boston Celtics may well be seen as legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference with the acquisitions of All Stars Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen complement the play of Paul Pierce. And if they should stumble it'd come as an embarrassment to the franchise and in particular GM Danny Ainge. Because with these acquisitions they're meant to have an immediate impact in the league. One might hazard a guess that much is expected of the triumvirate ?

The Orlando Magic as a franchise are playing above their abilities with an ensemble of players that'll take time to find their way. The play of power forward center Dwight Howard is on the rise and in time he'll become the preeminent player at his position in the league. And in Rashard Lewis he's got the perfect foil to complement his weakness.
Others who we can assume in the East that'll have something to say as to who'll be the one with the presence to come out of the often thought of weaker conference may well be the Pistons and the Chicago Bulls . Who if they're to make believers of us will have to play with a lot more confidence and leadership from Ben Wallace. Was he not the reason why he was brought in by GM John Paxson to add some real potency behind their defense and determined leadership ?
The Miami Heat are an enigma wrapped up in a conundrum. How can a team perform so badly and yet on the face of it appear to more than capable of holding their own against most teams ? We know that without All Star Dwayne Wade they've become a shell of themselves. And without the power of their most dominant player in Shaquille O'Neal they become as soft as a baby's behind in more ways than one. Old Father Time has caught up with Shaq and the rest of the league knows it. And for those who are of the belief that Pat Riley was in his right mind when he acquired free agent Penny Hardaway . I'd like for you to seriously reconsider that option. There are three legged lame horses with more presence than Hardaway possesses and more athleticism too !
The Cavaliers on paper are no better or worse than last year. And as much as their surprising run to the Finals was last year. One seriously doubts that they can repeat that feat again. LeBron's supporting cast has remained the same and the thinking is that very little is liable to change overall. It's safe to say that the smoking mirrors act was a one act play. The Toronto Raptors could very well end up spoiling everyone's comfort zone by pulling off a surprise and going even farther into the playoffs than last year.

In the Western Conference it remains very much as expected with all the prominent forces trying to usurp the perceived stranglehold that the San Antonio Spurs has on the title. They're indeed the world champions and have started off as the preseason favorites to repeat as champions. Somehow the likes of the Suns and Mavericks , Jazz and perhaps the Nuggets feel that they've got something to say about that. And the soap opera that is the Los Angeles Lakers continues to draw us in like a moth being drawn to a naked flame.

The bone of contention is however whomever ascends out of the West will have their way with their counterpart from the East in the Finals. As the quality of basketball being played in the East is deemed inferior to what's being played in the West. That may well be so in terms of offense. But on the defensive side of things the East tends normally to have the upper hand. And that initself can't really be denied. But there are one or two teams in the West that realize this and are able to make the adjustments necessary when meeting a foe. And it appears that no one does this better than the champions themselves under the auspices of their coach Greg Popovich. And with their triumvirate of stars of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and the envy of most males not merely because of his play but perhaps the fact that his wife is none other than Eva Longoria. The Spurs also have last year's MVP Tony Parker.

The Dallas Mavericks are no doubt somewhat shellshocked after last season's tumultuous exit in the first round to the Golden State Warriors. The loss of that series probably doesn't sit well with Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban. As not only was it embarrassing for him and the franchise. It may well have been seen as payback for his alleged shabby treatment of former coach Don Nelson , who was the coach of the coach of the victorious Warriors in that enthralling series.
So if you're to deduce who'll end up the Finals whom do you think it'll be ? It should make for quite an interesting argument don't you think ? It's as I'd said there's a little bit of a Columbo, Gil Grissom or a Lenny Briscoe in all of us that makes us think that we can somehow solve an unassuming riddle !
