    Never Take Anything For Granted

Wednesday, June 14, 2006, 03:21 PM EST [Michael Jordan, NBA , David St]

Somehow  the NBA  still   feels that  there's  a need   for  Michael   Jordan  to  be involved  in the sport.  David  Stern  has  voiced  his  opinions  several  times  concerning this  matter.  And  it would  seem  like  someone  is  taking  notice.  Rumors  have  been  persistent  that  Jordan would  like to reenter he fold  as  an owner  of an  NBA franchise.  Not  as a partner , but as the  sole  owner of  a team.

With  that  in  mind  consider  this, after the debacle  that took place in Washington   with  the Wizards  and  Abe   Pollin, the owner.  What  are we   to  make of  Jordan's latest  whim?  We  know  that  from his  compteitiveness  Jordan did  not  suffer  fools  gladly.  And  rightfully  so ,  as  he  was  always  considered to be a winner.  But  that  was  on the court.  Off  the  court ,  Michael's  competitive  instincts   let  him  down  and  his  waywardness  almost  lead  to the  team's   demise.  His  drafting  of  Kwame  Brown  straight   out  of  high  school,  a raw  and  undisciplined talent  who was  reluctant  to learn  from his  mentor  were  the first  signs that  all was  not  right  with  Jordan's  grasp  of  this  side of  the business.   We   all know  the  outcome  of that little foray with  Brown.

There  are  two  scenarios  being  played  out in the  NBA at  the moment where  ownership  could  be changing  hands   with  a  number  of  teams.  The  Seattle  Supersonics  and  the Portland  Trailblazers  have  owners  that  are  very  unhappy  and  willing   to  sell   their  teams  if  the asking   price  is  met. Jordan  has  let  be  known that  he's  in the  market  for  a  team ,  but  it  has  to  be the right  team. David  Stern  will   do  his  levelled  best  to  see  that  Michael  is  facilitated  in this  regard ,  but  at  what  cost  to  the NBA?

The NBA  can  ill  afford  to have  Michael  Jordan  come back  to  sport  that  he  graced  so  wonderfully   and  yet  have  him  fail  again as  an executive  or   owner  as  it  wouldn't  paint  an  awe  inspiring   picture  to  its  partners  and  sponsors.  It's a  multi-billion  dollar  a year  business   that  can  ill  afford  that  kind  of  a catastrophe.   Stern   has  his  part  to  play  and  so  does   Jordan  in this  scenario.   I  would  guess that  if  Jordan  could  be  persuaded  to  form  a  syndicate or  partnership with  him  as  as  the  figurehead  then  facilitating  such  an exercise  would  not  be  out  of the  question.   With  Jordan  as  the  sole principal  it  might  not  be  looked on  so  favorably.
