Sadly  but  inevtably    it  had   to  happen  as   there  is  no  longer   an  American  who  can  claim    to  the   Heavyweight   Champion  of  the  World.    Hasim   Rahman   relinquished   his  title  in  a  devastating  loss    to  Oleg  Maskaev  on  Saturday  night.   Truth   be  known    Rahman  was  just  holding    to  that  title  by  the  skin  of  his  teeth  as   he's  not  been    the  fighter   of  yesteryear    when  he was  more   fluid   and  methodical    in  his  movement,  and  decisive    as   a  puncher.  

Maskaev's    defeat    of   Rahman  in  the  opening  minutes  of the  12th   round  wasn't   totally  unexpected    as   there  was  always   a  belief  that   Rahman    underestimated  his   opponent.   The  result  being  a  TKO   was  never  in  doubt   as  the   judges  had    the  Kazahk   ahead  on   points  and  by  at  least   two  rounds.

With  this    win,   it    now  means   that  all  four   versions    of  the  Heavyweight   title  are  in  the    hands  of   boxers  who   are  all  from  the  former  Soviet  Union. Not    an  unprecedented   feat  in  this  day  and   age   as  the    heavyweight   boxing  scene   in  the   US  has  never   been   in  such   dire  straits.  Even   though  there    are   several    natural  born  Americans   ranked   in  the  top  ten.    None   can   be  thought  of  as  being  awe inspiring.

It   is  a  sad  indictment   of the   boxing scene  in  the      United  States    especially  in  that   most  prestigious   of  divisions    where  the    US  once   ruled    the  roost.   Sadly   this  is  no  longer   the  stance   that  can  be  maintained  as   there   are  no  clear    new  talents   on  the  horizon      who  can    be  said   to  be  proud   to   uphold    what  was  once  a  great  distinction  of  being  called   the  Heavyweight   Champion  of  the    world.
