You know there's something wrong when a former player is caught in the cross hairs of an owner's rant as to his team's malaise. It can't have been missed by anyone who's noticed the itinerant rantings of Timberwolves' owner Glen Taylor and much to the chagrin of others over how he felt that the franchise was let down by Kevin Garnett.
In happier times Taylor seen here with former player Kevin Garnett. picture courtesy of nba.com/minnesotatimberwolves/kevingarnett .....
Less I'm mistaken Taylor and GM Kevin McHale all but lost all of the goodwill the franchise built up within the Minneapolis area when they agreed to trade the much beloved star to the Boston Celtics. And though this young team is struggling to determine a path for itself within the league. I find it somewhat infantile for Taylor to be now criticizing the player. Was the time that Garnett spent there in Minnesota not profitable for all concerned ? OK so you didn't so you didn't fulfill your goal of winning an NBA championship. But it wasn't for the lack of trying on Garnett's path during his tenureship there with the T'wolves.

It can be said that though the team has faltered it was of their own making as to the lamentable position that they now find themselves in. As for McHale we've not heard a response from him as to his owner's childlike rant. For Taylor to suggest tht Garnett tanked the season by sitting out 5 games because of an injury is asinine and not deserving of a reply from the player , himself. I suspect that Taylor has forgotten that the roster surrounding the player wasn't all that impressive to begin with. But then that's what you get in a hiree of McHale's supposed pedigree. His assessment of NBA talent is broderline suspect at best and only marginally worse than that of his counterpart in New York. Though we knew off the bat the New York Knicks were going to be terrible this season anyway. As to how bad I don't believe that anyone believed that they'd be this lamentable.

In all honesty though whatever gave anyone the idea that Isaiah Thomas was ever any good as a coach let alone a great assessor of NBA personnel ? Much of the same can be said of McHale himself as he was skirting under the radar of not having to operate in major market in the NBA. The veracity of Taylor's argument is about palpable and palatable as asking someone to take a swift knee to the groin. For the reciever it'll be painful and for the aggressor of the action it only goes to show how infantile they are.

The Twolves' record in the Northwest Division stand at an abysmal 17-50 some 27.5 games behind the Utah Jazz. Only the morbidly moribund Seattle Supersonics has a worse record within the division. But when you're witnessing the play within the division you've only got to appreciate how bad things have become for the likes of the T'wolves and Sonics.

About the only thing that the team has in its favor as of now is that it's youth based and laden with a varying degree of talent. And at the core of its element are Al Jefferson the leading scorer on the team, Randy Foye, Rashard McCants and Corey Brewer. Whether or not coach Randy Wittman can steer this team in the right direction is open to question.
As for McHale he's sitting atop of this curent mess and on appearance his position would seem safe for now. But only Glen Taylor seems to think that much of the franchise's problems seem to stem from what he believes was Garnett's sitting out the final 5 games of the season. Pity that he and McHale didn't think about surrounding Garnett with the talent required to make the team a real contender.
With all the talk of famed golf tutor Butch Harmon dispensing with offering his services to two time major winner John Daly. One can summize that with the advent of this latest debacle in the golfer's episodic and turbulent life. It'd be wise to think that things couldn't get any worse for the golfer. But we'd be remiss in thinking otherwise at this juncture. Daly's demeanor and the alleged drinking with fans at the event played a part in the decision made by Harmon no doubt. That event was the PODS Championship played Innisbrook Golf Course , Palm Harbor, Fl.

Daly's career thus far has been a topsy turvy ride thats known highs and lows . The winning of the British Open at St Andrews in 1995 and his lone major here in the USA, the PGA championship at Crooked Stick in 1991 have been the highs for the often celebrated golfer. The lows have been his multiple marriages and the ensuing divorces. His witnessing of a former wife being indicted by the Justice Department for moeny laundering and racketeering as well as conspiracy to distribute narcotics. All of which would suggest that Daly's life to say the least has been an eventful one. Bouts of alcoholism that he's yet to overcome. But yet he still finds time to play on the PGA Tour ? Albeit with limited success.

It'd appear that Daly's love of the game isn't much as compared to his love of alcohol and mingling with the fans. If Tiger Woods is meant to be the much heralded driving force behind the game's renaissance and the hysteria he creates amongst the fans. Then it can be said that Daly is the complete antithesis of what Woods stands for . Woods the consummate professional beloved by the majority of the PGA Tour's players and fans alike. Whereas Daly may well be just seen as the circus act that comes to town whose only purpose is be provide his well intentioned clown's act. It may well be pleasing to some fans who can identify with Daly as their everyman with regard to his status on the tour. And while one would feel that Daly may well be at peace with himself. I can't help but wonder what would've happened if he could just concentrate on the game itself without all of the outside distractions ?

The Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Invitational held in Orlando , and one of the more prestigious events on the Florida swing of the PGA Tour was to be where Daly was suppose to be playing as of yesterday. But having missed a tee time at the pro am he was disqualified by the event's organizers and PGA. As to his excuse for missing the tee time that may well not be explainable. As Daly stated that he'd been misinformed as to his tee time. Highly irregular given Daly's propensity for not always wanting to play even if he's been given a sponsor's exemption. Daly marches to the beat of his own drum and his demeanor is not about to change whatever sanctions are imposed on him by the PGA.
Comical but it no doubt sums up Daly's play as of late ? picture courtesy of upi syndication/Larry Johnson .....
If this a harbinger of things to come for Daly for the remainder of his career. It doesn't seem worthwhile that he participates in a game that has served him so well. When he first burst unto the Tour it seemed that he was just the breath of fresh air that the sport needed. His punishing swings when he tee'd off on the course was something of monsterous brute force. Drives in excess of 300 yds were very much like a walk in the park for Daly. But as quick as his star rose it faded just as quickly. His stunning win of the PGA at Crooked Stick was as welcoming as it was surprising to all those who witnessed it. But with the advent of that victory things all too quickly began to spin out of control Daly. As quickly as he stood at the top of the golf plateau , his fall was just as fast if not more spectacular.
Daly known for his power of the tee. picture courtesy of golfrankindex/images/John Daly ......
And even with the winning of a second major it was apparent that Daly wasn't entirely happy with the notoriety that came with winning. He couldn't be himself. Golf supposedly is a game where its players are always circumspect and thought of as modern day gentlemen. Something that John Daly isn't at all entirely happy portraying as golf may well have been a means to an end for him . Hit a few balls all day long for 18 holes and the respite would be at the nineteenth hole where he could consume as much alcohol as desired. That's the utopia that he sought.
And while no one exactly laments his woes it can be said that he's entirely happy with his all. If nothing else the fans are still there to watch what'll unfold be it good , bad or indifferent. Woods is the Pied Piper of Golf but it's Daly whose become the game's clown prince .
For all that's happening and will happen in the NBA this season. There's meant to be a certainty as to what we ought to expect with regard to the season. But that's been laid to rest in some ways because of the spate of trades that've taken place within the Western Conference in the last few weeks.
Perhaps the best center the game has seen over the last thirty years ? Shaquille O'Neal of the Suns. picture courtesy of nbae/getty images/Lance Murphy ........
What was once meant to be a certainty concerning some teams advancing to the playoffs. On appearance that no longer seems to be the case. Shaquille O'Neal moves from the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns. And they're allegedly meant to be a favorite to make it out of the talent laden conference to the NBA Finals. Their play would suggest otherwise at this juncture. As O'Neal has yet to find that synergy with his teammates. GM Steve Kerr still feels that given time Shaq'll become attuned to the ways of his teammates and their play.

If I were a Suns' fan I'd feel that there'd be cause for concern as Shaq has yet to acquit himself adequately on the court and show what he's made of. He lumbers up and down the court as if he's laden down with an elephant on his back. Shaq's becoming more of a liability than anyone is willing to admit. As many believe that he's still got what it takes to steer this team ultimately in the right direction. At this juncture though it may well be too early to assess the situation overall. It's becoming clear that if the Suns are not only to make it into the postseason they as a team'll have to play a whole lot better. And Shaq in particular'll have to raise his playing and commitment level once and for all. Shaq has never been known to keep himself at the optimum level of fitness. As his primary force of subduing his opponents ahs always been sheer brute force and intimidation .

It's no longer working as many of the younger players within the league have found Shaq out and he's now become ever so predictable . That being said the other components of the team'll have to pick up the slack when Shaq isn't playing well. And that'll be encumbent on the likes of Nash , Stoudemire , Grant and Diaw. Without their contributions this team'd be lamenting as an also ran within their division.

Tonight we may well be seeing one of the more enticing games of the week thus far. The New Orleans Hornets will square of against the Utah Jazz. And the two teams possess arguably two of the best point guards playing in the league at this juncture. With all due respect to the likes of Jason Kidd and Baron Davis. But in Chris Paul of the Hornets and Deron Williams of the Jazz we're seeing the players that'll epitomize how the game'll be played in the future. Both are undeniably great talents. And their maturity belies their years in the league.

Paul along with West , Stojackovic and Chandler have quietly gone along and posted one of the best records in the Western Conference. And if anything have given notice that their time may well have arrived. Coach Byron Scott has them playing a competitive brand of basketball that's reliant on speed , offense , defense and a great deal of agility . And in Paul he's got a like minded oncourt general who epitomizes hustle and flow. He's become a cold hearted assassin.

The Jazz have been on something of tear but they too know that it's not what you do in the regular season that counts. It's the postseason where the glory is attained and legends and legacies are cemented. An d the play of their own point guard seems to bear this out. He's been the player that the fans have sought since the retirment of Stockton and the departure of Karl Malone. And with power forward Carlos Boozer having another productive year. It seems too that the Jazz have their sights set on garnering a postseason b erth. And with the way things are beginning to shake out in the conference . There no longer seems to be a certainty as to who'll make the postseason let alone win their respective divisions.

The battle between the two of the more quintessential young point guards within the league ought to be something to watch. As neither'll want to back down. And both are equally willing to show their offensive prowess on the floor. To determine who is the better of the two would be akin to trying to split an atom particle. They're both equally as good as one another to my mind. The difference between them is that finite. I'm not a betting man as those days are long gone and behind me now. But even I wouldn't to place a wager as to who is the best amongst the two of them. Suffice to say I'll leave it for the fans out there to decide. All I know is that I know good basketball when I see it. And these two and the way that they play are the epitome of it at its very best.

I for one am hoping to watch them both contest what'll definately be a very entertaining game. And as to who'll win is anyone's guess at this juncture. Suffice to say that these two teams have been playing the sort of entertaining game that draws fans back to the arenas. And that if anything is what the NBA is all about at the end of the day.
Well the NFL combine came and went in four days. And there at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis many of the top college talent were out through the paces by NFL scouts and coaches with GM's watching along with a cadre of press reporting their every move. Say nothing of which many of agents were hyping up their clients.

There'll obviously be a number players that'll have done well for themselves by moving up the depth charts of many of the coaches and GM's in the process. And there'll be a number of players that'll done some harm to their prestige either by not participating or in effect not performing well enough. That being said what do we really learn from this exercise ? A battery of tests won't effectively tell us whether or not a player'll succeed in the NFL. Coaches and GM's alike will no doubt rely on game film to see that and no doubt the interviews that took place will predicate what decisions will be made by them on draft day. No amount of testing at the end of the day will determine what we're being told.
LSU's Glen Dorsey . Commonly believed that he'll no doubt be taken as a top 5 pick. picture courtesy of images/google search/google.com/lsu/glendorsey .........
And the press themselves are out there telling us what we ought to expect and who's making a good showing. It's like being told by a car salesman once you've stepped into the showroom that the car you desire looks good . But in reality until you get behind the wheel yourself and get a feel for the vehicle you're not going to make that outlay in purchasing that vehicle. And the process is no different when it comes to NFL combine. Wonderlic Test and all that's meant to suggest , it's the interview process that really gives the coaches anf GM's and owners an insight into the player's insight and psyche. Offcourse they'll know what it is that they each require of the draftees that they're liable to take as each round unfolds on draft day.
The speculation as to who'll be taken is of interest to everyone . And for the press and fans alike it's something of a rite of passage as the supposition begins. Darren McFadden, Chris Long, Glen Dorsey, Matt Ryan , Andre' Woodson or any number of others may well fit that team's bill. But I'd hazard a guess that none of us really know who's likelty to be taken number one overall. We all have our choices as to who that should be. But in all honesty would you be surprised if the person you chose wasn't taken #1 ?
Darren McFadden of Arkansas. picture courtesy of athlonsports.com/mcfaddendarren ..........
And as much as many us of may well have differing views on the process and what it determines overall. It's allegedly the best system that assesses a player's talent and worth that the NFL has. To the keenest of observers and all of the laymen come draft day. It can be said when we're watching the process unfold , we know doubt think of ourselves as a coach or GM trying to outdo each of the other thirty one teams within the NFL. There'll be winners and losers as the process unfolds. There may well be one or two draft day surprises that take place along the way with one or two trades that'll evolve. We might even decry our team for making an idiotic pick or trade. And for the players taken in the first round there'll be an abundance of fame , wealth and hopefully success awaiting them in the process.
Mike Hart of Michigan picture courtesy of search/googl images/google.com/mike hart .......
The lesser lights of the draft we're told are taken in the lower rounds. But it's been said that's where normally some of the more tangible assets that can be found in those rounds of the draft. And it'd be remiss to think otherwise. So many players that've gone on to find success have been taken in the lower rounds of the draft. It's not meant to be a scientific process. If anything it's more hit or miss in many of the cases. But when a franchise strikes gold it can be said no one is more happier than the coach or GM. The fans'll celebrate too as they may feel that it means a change in their team's fortunes. And for a team that's been mired in mediocrity the difference in making the right pick may well mean the determinination as to that team's fortunes for the next four or five years at best, or possibly less. And thoug there have been times where the pick to turns out to be a bust . But at the end of the day it'll be about the more prudent decisions being made by the teams on the day of the draft.

Not that I'm averse to athletes taking up another career once they've retired from their chosen profession. Some have been successful and other have been mired in mediocrity with regard to a second career beyond their competitive days on the field.

Recently I had the pleasure of seeing once again the remake of the football drama /comedy The Longest Yard. The film starred Adam Sandler , Chris Rock , James Cromwell , Courtney Cox-Arquette, Burt Reynolds , Cloris Leachman and array of former NFL stars. Sandler in the movie reprises the role of Paul Crew . Crew for those of you are old enough to remember the original movie was played by none other than Burt Reynolds himself. This time around however Reynolds though having aged visibly wasn't the star of this particular vehicle. His role was that of the coach of the team that was made up of convicts that were to play the prison's semi professional team.
Brian Bosworth seen here in the foreground portraying a prison guard by the name of Gardner in the movie The Longest Yard. picture courtesy of images/yahoo/com/movies/thelongestyard......
But my reason for this particular piece wasn't to center on the movie itself but to really cover the role played in it by one of the former NFL players . Who it can be said was known at the height of his career for what many thought he was capable of. But he certainly didn't live to the hype heaped upon him. The player in question is none other than former Sooner Brian Bosworth. It can be said that at the height of his college career Bosworth may well have been one of the most outspoken and narcissistic individuals in all of collegiate sports. A two time Butkus Award winner and graduate of Oklahoma with a degree in business management. It could be alluded to that much was expected of Bosworth. A gifted athlete with a propensity for dishing out pain.
Bosworth seen here in a Seahawks' uniform one it can be said that he didn't exactly wear with great honor. picture courtesy of ap/photo...
Bosworth it can be said was of the belief that he was amongst the very best of the best to have played the game at his position. But that notwithstanding it can be argued that he failed to live up to the praise and accolades that were heaped upon him during college. Once in the NFL , having been drafted by the Seattle Seahawks there was really little of tangibilty that came out of his tenure up in the northwest with the franchise. His college was curtailed with him having been kicked off the University of Oklahoma team for testing positive for steroids use amongst other serious infractions. The Seahawks may well have saw something in his abilities but it never materialized once he entered the fray of the NFL.
Former Oakland Raider Bo Jackson . picture courtesy of cachimages/bojackson.....
The one thing that we know about Bosworth was that once on the field he'd either be a liability to his team or on the rare occasion that he played exceptionally well. He'd show that he was a more than capable athlete. But those occasions were all too rare for the Seahawks to profit from this productivity and play. Ans nowehere was this more evident than when the Seahawks faced the Oakland Raiders in a game that was nationally televised . There Bosworth would meet his tormentor on that night. Raiders' running back Bo Jackson would prove that he was all that was said of him and more. And for Bowsorth would prove to be a painful night for him and one of infamy. Highlights are reran of Bowsorth's failures on the night but none more so than when he was literally pile driven into the ground by Jackson in a memorable moment from the game itself. The run itself would produce one of a litany highlights from Jackson's career. But the run run as it's sometimes known is memorable for those who witnessed it live , as too for the audience that watched it there in their homes.
Bosworth seen here from his role in the movie Stone Cold . His role was that of Joe Huff aka John Stone. picture courtey of imdb.com/movies/stonecold.......
Bosworth's brief two year stint in the NFL was a hard learnt lesson on his path. He left the league having suffered several niggling injuries. But it was a shoulder injury that forced his hand eventually that led him to forego that career. He languished as a cast off off from the NFL . But pursued a career in Hollywood as an action star. Whatever that's deemed to be I'm not quite clear. Suffice to say his portrayals on screen were almost comical as many of displays were on the field during his playing career in the NFL . For Bosworth life may well have been just one big game. But his talent was wasted because of his sheer lack of commitment to his craft on and off the field.
