Considering the plights of Justin Gatlin and Floyd Landis leads me to believe that that either they didn't have the brains that God gave them to figure out that what they were doing is wrong or they felt were playing a character on film. Both of these highly accomplished athletes seemed to have lost it somewhere between making their respective sports an avocation and then turning it into a vocation. It had to have been the money if nothing else !
Today it was announced that Landis' B sample from his test during the Tour de France had been returned 'positive' thereby nullifying his victory and all but handing victory to a Spaniard who'd finished second. Landis had been roundly supported by his predecessor Lance Armstrong but it remains to be seen if that support will still remain that vocal. Instinctively one would expect Armstrong to back of that support markedly and return to the background as his seven victories in cycling's premier event had been widely questioned and scrutinized by the public as well as the governing bodies. To date the assertions against Armstrong have never been substantiated but this doesn't mean that questions again won't be raised. Expect more to unfold in the coming months concerning this matter .
Gatlin's own situation has been made all the more tenuous because of his association with his trainer Trevor Graham, who before coming across Gatlin had been the trainer of both Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery. And even more astonishing are his ties to the BALCO saga. Several of the track athletes under his tutelage have been implicated in this mess. Montgomery himself has received a lifetime ban fom the sport and has sought not to fight it. Marion Jones still remains active in the sport although one has to question how soon it will before her name is mentioned once again in matters surrounding this latest incident.
Graham has never been indicted although his name keeps cropping up in several witness statements given to the grand jury. This testimony should prove grounds enough for an indictment as and when the Justice Department sees fit. For now Graham and his student will remain taciturn in pleading their innocence as to the charges. Gatlin has proclaimed his innocence pleading that he was framed. Graham's explanation to the matter was that a former employee who had rehired was behind the plot to smear Gatlin's good name. It's alleged that this employee a female masseuse while working on Gatlin's legs rubbed an illecit cream on him that lead to the positive test for a banned susbstance. However credible that this story might appear one has to wonder whether or not Graham has finally met his match with regard to the much tighter screening that now takes place at track and field events.
Cheaters cheat but winners will always prevail.
