All of the apparent guile and charm of renowned college coach Bobby Bowden must now be little more than a smile at present. With the news coming down that several of the players within his program will be disqualified from playing in the whimsical Music City Bowl . One could say that this is a further indication as to how far the football program has sunk under Bowden over the past couple of years ?

Barely indentifiable now is a program where many of the players haven't the ability to comprehend a playbook let alone bother turning up for classes. A systematic sense of entitlement and the belief that their physical abilities on the field will be enough is all that many of the players no doubt feel is enough to get them by in life. No doubt many of them aspire one day to play in the NFL. But what does it suggest when approximately one quarter of the football team won't be able to participate in an upcoming bowl game because of academic fraud on an overly grand scale ?

While no one is alluding to the fact that Bowden may have known about this. It clearly is something that was so blatant that he may well have been kept in the dark as to what was going on. But unfortunately this hasn't been the first time that the program has come under investigation. What is so troubling though has been the apparent lack accountability within the program and its standards concerning the academic eligibilty of the players under his tutelage.

Many will feel that it's certainly not the coach's responsibility for the players to meet the requirements that other students are proferred to meet. But when you see that even the coaches themselves act as if they're unaware as to what's happening and then act as if they're somehow not in anyway meant to respond to what's going on. It has to lead one to believe that they have only their own best interests at heart and not of that of the players. It would appear on the surface that in light of this they'd rather see these penalties imposed. Albeit that the players are at fault. But the faculty also should bare a great deal of responsibility in this travesty.

Having surrogates take tests for players and offering them answers to tests seem that rather than forcing the players to actually learn something. They would rather see them being enabled by way of cheating by any means necessary. Bowden himself is obfuscating his own responsibilities as a coach in this respect. He ought to be taking note as to what's happening beyond the playing field concerning his players. Afterall he was entrusted with not only their well being as athletes but also as students on behalf the athletes' parents and at the behest of the university. At least that's what one would think isn't it ?
Bowden has yet to address either the public or press on the matter and the only thing forthcoming had been a rather impromptu statement from coach designate Jimbo Fisher. And he's merely stated that in due time Bowden will be addressing the issues raised. This has not only proven to be an embarrassment for the college but also to Bowden at this juncture. No one really his questions his stature as a coach but now his legacy by this latest episode may well be tarnished by the allegations covering the players involved.
What we should also be asking is what was being done by the administration that somehow they overlooked all of this ? From the adcademic advisors to coaches they surely have not only a responsibility to the players but also to the college ? Afterall there are supposedly steps in place to prevent these sort of things from happening . And at the same time what sort of monitoring goes on with regard to the academic progress of the athletes ? Whilst this may not be the only college establishment where this has happened. Certainly this has been the most egregious case brought before the NCAA in some time. And it would appear that pending the investigation that there will be a severe price to pay by Florida State once their findings have been made public.
Whatever sanctions should the NCAA see fit to impose on the university we can assume that it will be prohibitive and hurt their recruiting process right across the board as far as the Athletics Department is concerned. And say nothing as to the esteem of the university itself. Whilst we can all laud the academic achievements of a university. Let us not forget that it's in the athletics field where the real money comes pouring in for the universities to provide a lot of the scholarships that enables the recruiting as well as the high salaries paid to the coaches and their respective staff. Say nothing as to the exposure gleaned through the coverage on the broadcast and cable networks across the nation. College is first and foremost a place of learning but somehow it has now become more about being a place of business in terms of producing athletes that'll go on to the professional world of sports.
Along the way things have become corrpted and none more so than the NCAA itself. Who like many of the coaches have obfuscated a lot of their own responsibilities to the athletes in order to chase after the " almighty dollar ". At the same time the college athlete is left out in the cold in the midst of this all. The price that a college will have to pay may on the surface seem too severe. But if makes everyone around sit up and take note as to what's really going on then hopefully some good will come out of it all. But one can't help but wonder if anyone is really all that concerned at the end of the day.
