To see their ashes rising like that of a phoenix to my mind has got to be the feel good story of the year. And especially when it comes from within the realms of college sports.

The tumultous past of the Baylor University and that of its basketball team has been laid to rest. But to see this team come back from what has been a situation that for many on appearance seem so indescribable and senseless. It all now amounts to a nightmare that the students and faculty have awoken from. The death of one its star players Patrick Dennehy to a crime committed by teammate Carlton Dotson to this day for many is inexplicable. But what was even more disgusting was the action of then coach Dave Bliss.

Bliss' actions doesn't speak highly of the man nor should his actions be excused. The allegations made against the slain player were unwarranted and completely unjustified . It set a precdent as to what a coach is prepared to go out and do to besmirch the reputation of not only a player but in some ways the university itself. His behind the scenes machinations were machavellian . And were it not for the effort conducted by law enforcement as well as that of the university itself we may never found out the truth.

Whilst no one questions the loss of Dennehy at this juncture it had to be saddening for the faculty and students to see the college's name dragged through the mud. And at the same time the coach , Dave Bliss acting as though the loss of Denney was meaningless. The allegations made by him against the player were unfounded . And to this day he has never offered an apology to Dennehy's parents or to Baylor University itself. Dotson is now behind bars having been found guilty of Dennehy's murder . And Bliss himself is no longer involved with college basketball. That to my mind other than Dotson's sentencing is the only meaningful thing to come out of this all.

By the actions that'd taken place and the upheaval within the school after this terrible tragedy. The basketball program was all but left for dead. The Bears as they're known , it was thought that it'd take years to resurrect the program and place them back on the pedestal that it had once known. With the advent of Scott Drew coming in and revamping what was an all but dead program. They now seem to be heading back in the right direction. Their record certainly seems to bear this out. At 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the Big 12, it can be said that they're now back in the big time. Now ranked back inside the top 25 of the Coaches' Poll , that of USA Today/ESPN. One can feel that the program is justified in feeling nothing is out of reach when it comes to this season.

At this juncture they're playing some great basketball and the fans are turning to cheer them on and voice their approval. And the players themselves seem to believe in everything that Scott Drew is striving to achieve. They posssess a good nucleus of young players led by Curtis Jerrells. A keen scorer and a player that Drew thinks highly of as a leader on this team. And though being randked at number 24 may not seem a lot in the eyes of many. It's certainly more than many had ever hoped for. At this juncture the only surprise might well be amongst those who'd written the program off. There must've been a deep faith within those inside of the program. And amongst the players there now seems to be something of kindred spirit that has raised this team from where it was just three short years ago.

It can only be hoped that the story for the team will be a happy one of nothing else. And at the end of this current season they'll have done themselves proud. Because in the cold light of day what has happened to this team and the university as a whole shouldn't be wished upon anyone no matter how great or small. It's a true testament to the university itself that they've remained to true to the college ideals of sportsmanship and fair play. Which under the auspices of Bliss it appears were thrown out of the window for other ideals not wanted within the sport itself.
