Can Things Get Any Worse For The Cubs ?

    Friday, April 21, 2006, 03:16 PM EST [Chicago Cubs,........Derrick L]

The Cubs'  loss  of  Derrick  Lee  leads  me  to  believe  that  thigns  can't get  any worse for the  team.  Notwithstanding the  fact  that  Kerry  Woods  and  Mark  Prior  are already   MIA.  What's  next  for the  franchise ?    Lee  is  The  Cubs'  most  potent  offensive weapon  and  his  loss  to  a broken wrist  from the  collision  with  Rafael  Furcal  was  too  painful  to watch.  Not  only  fom  the standpoint   as  a fan  of  Lee,  but  as someone  who  has  watched   his  progression  from   his  trade  to  The  Cubs  from  my  beloved  Marlins.  I've  always  thought  he  was  going  to  be  a  great  player.    He  proved  my  point  by  having a breakout   year  last  season.    Now  hiss  loss  will  put the  Cubs  in  a  real  predicament over the next  eight to  ten  weeks,   the  projected  time  he's  due  to  be out.    The  Cubs no  doubt  will  rally  on  without  him ,  but  one can't  help  but  wonder  what  will  happen  next.   Their  position  in  the  N.L.  Central  isn't  dire  but  they  can't  afford  to  fall  too  far  behind  the  leaders  within   their  division,  because  this  season  it's likely  to be  very  competitive.   The  Cardinals  and  Astros   are  likely  to  consolidate their   position and take   advantage   of this  leaving    The  Cubs   to  wonder  if the  curse  is  real  or   just  a  myth.
