It would appear that Bryant Gumbel loves to speak his mind even at the expense of annoying a prospective employee. Most recently on his HBO show, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel that aired on 15 th August he made the remark that NLFPA representative Gene Upshaw was amongst other things a leashed lap dog that was walked at Tagliabue's behest serving his master most adroitly. This was not the only remark made by Gumbel . But it was by far the most serious as it was tantamount to calling Upshaw a subserviant animal. Which in no way has Upshaw ever been. He's served his players' needs as he's seen fit negotiating for them a collective bargaining agreement that has become the envy of all the major league sports.
Gumbel on the other hand knows that he may well have burned his bridges with his comments made indirectly at the league and about its policies. He'd been hired by the NFL Network as on srceen analyst that'd be covering games for the NFL through its commercial tv arm. Outgoing commissioner Paul Tagliabue is said to be incensed over Gumbel's comments and wants him fired. However, the decision is not his to be made as it is in the hands of network president Steve Bornstein, who has the final say. But you can be assured that no decision will be made without there being direct consultation with Tagliabue himself. Gumbel hasn't made any comments to the media since the episode took place and it's now a waiting game that'll be played out one way or another.
I suspect that incoming commissioner Roger Goodell will likely meet with Gumbel and ask him to explain his comments before deciding on making a decision. The coments notwithstanding Gumbel's outspokeness can't be tolerated even though the comments were made on another network's station and were as part of critique of what he felt was wrong with what the NFL was doing and how it was conducting itself with regard to the situation in New Orleans. As it's Gumbel's assertion that the NFL will make iti an edict that The Saints will be allowed to leave to ensure that a team is placed in Los Angeles. Rather than doing its utmost to ensure that the team remains in New Orleans.
Whatever the outcome , I for one will be pleased if Gumbel is hoisted on his petard for his latest outburst. As he's become an embarassment of sorts with his self appointed proclamations.
As always I'm apprecaitive if you've found the post to be of interest. Post your comments as you see fit........tophatal.
