Hey, Michael Vick is a great player but do I really needed to be reminded of that fact ? Well I suppose I do because I'm still looking for the evidence that would suggest he is , otherwise the rumours being bandied about are all fallacies.
Therein lies the problem he's became another hyped up athlete that has yet to show the promise that was so richly anointed upon him in college. He's struggled to find his way in the NFL and despite his popularity amongst the fans that promise has yet to show fruition on the field. Vick paraphernalia is amongst the top selling authorized NFL merchandise brands on the market but that alone will not satisfy the most ardent of fans. We all know it loks good and feels good but we want our icons to be winners on the field.
Jordan had it! Bird had it ! Magic had it ! Shaq has it ! And dare I say it even Kobe has it ! But to date we're still waiting on Michael Vick. He was suppose to be the one ! The guy who had it ! Whatever it may be.
Five years in and we're still waiting on Vick to show us that he's got the tools of the trade to be an accomplished quarterback in the NFL. Patience is a virtue but the fans in the NFL have long since abandoned the icons who were thought of as being great. All because they've failed to deliver.
Will Vick be judged amongst these fallen icons ? The jury is still out on this with their verdict. Overwhelmingly the preponderous of the evidence would suggest that Vick has yet to fulfill all that was expected of him. Despite the fact that his coach Jim Mora Jr feels that Vick is well on his way to accomplishing and meeting the expectations that are being asked of him. However the fans of Atlanta may not remain too patient much longer if Vick isn't able to deliver the goods and that most notably will be a Superbowl. The pieces are in place but this team is not yet techincally sound and hasn't yet caught unto Vick's foibles and his umistakable belief that he can do it all by himself. As electrifying a talent as he is Vick now should be able to trust his teammates rather than try to shoulder the burden by himself. No greater an example has there been of this than with Hall of Famer John Elway. It was not until the final pieces were in place that we saw how great Elway would really become. He already was an inherent talent and repeating as Superbowl champion only enhanced his already cult status.
Vick will now have to learn that if he's to aspire to reach these great heights then he'll have to learn the basics of being an efficient passer and to trust his teammates. Inspired flashes of brillance alone will not enable the Falcons to win all the time even if it does make for a great highlight reel moment that can be flashed across our screens incessantly and analyzed by the pundits repititively. Jordan had his moments also but how many of us remember that he was also surrounded by great cohesive force that got the job done. Michael and his teammates know that they're on their way but it'll be a hard road to travel.
Having reached an NFC Championship game they were unable to acquit themselves accordingly and suffered an emotional loss to the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 in 2004. Since then we've not seen the team return to such heights and one has to wonder if Vick will end up being a bust. If so he'll join a long line of mercurial stars that have fallen by the wayside. Much has been made of the money that Arthur Blank has vested in Vick's and the Falcons' success as it totals in excess of $ 100m in a contract that was signed in 2003, that in itself would suggest that Blank and management are in it for the long haul with Vick as the captain of the ship.
