It never ceases to amaze me that when I see athletes that reign supreme in their sport or chosen field that I'm sometimes witnessing greatness in my presence and obviously for the sportsfans out there , yours as well. With this in mind I'm making up my own list of athletes that at present I best feel represent this criteria.
They are as follows; Annika Sorenstam, Michael Schumacher, Roger Federer , Tiger Woods and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Each of these individuals when on display give us their all in their pusuit of winning. What is even more striking is that there's never a great deal controversy surrounding their display or conduct in their chosen endeavor.
Despite Aninka Sorentam's success one cannot question her desire to get better each time she gets unto a golf course. Her pursuit of excellence is unrivalled amongst her peers. And this is what has made her the pre-eminent female gofler of her generation. Her unabashed enjoyment and enthusiasm for the game is unparallelled and this is what has made her so competitive. Since her arrival on the LPGA Tour in 1993 Sorenstam has known nothing but success and her record speaks for itself. She's already an entrant into LPGA Hall of Fame having met the criteria of having competed on the tour for a decade and winning a major. In Sorenstam's case the tally now stands at 10 and counting. Her tour victories now stand at 67 and although she remains a distant second behind Kathy Whitworth's tally of 88 victories it is believed that should Sorenstam maintain her present pace she could equal if not break the record within the next 5 years. Her list of accomplishments gets even bigger by the year ........7 times the Rolex Female Golfer of The Year.....Career Prize Money leader won on the LPGA tour in excess $ 13, 500, 000 ......and a career Grand Slam winner and until most recently shared the accomplishment with Tiger Woods of being the most active grand slam winner on either of the tours. With Woods having won his 11th major at the Open in Hoylake, England.
Annika has met the competition of her rivals head on and continues to achieve success even with the fact that there are now some new teenage phenoms on the horizon and several now competing on the LPGA Tour. Chief amongst her rivals are that of Michelle Wie, Morgan Pressel, Natali Gulbis, Brittany Linncicome and perennial stalwarts Grace Park and Se Ri Pak. Added to that fact there's also a littany of young Koreans also competing to ususrp and succeed Sorenstam.
Michael Schumacher was a phenom the first time he stepped behind the wheel of an F1 vehicle and his fans and devotees of the sport knew it. However the adulation bestowed upon Schumacher has not been evident here in the United States. The rest of the world acknowledges Schumacher as the best the world has ever seen and may well be never likely to be seen again. His unprecedented success is unparallelled and the accolades continue to mount. A 7 time World Champion and 89 Formula One Grand Prix wins assures Schumacher of his place in Formula One Grand Prix folklore. He continues to compete and is now about to embark upon winning an eighth championship although he remains less than 12 points behind the leader and reigning champion Ferdinand Alonso.
Effortlessly he has raced around the tracks of N. and S. America, Europe, Africa and the Far East putting his talents on display for the whole world to see, many a time leaving his opponents in his wake. He's able to do this on many of the differing track conditions be it wet, dry or slick always managing to defeat his opponent and garnering the support of the fans. The sport has its detractors as they see it as not much more than a driver seated behind the wheel of a technically superior beast with not much for the driver to do other than to steer. But if you're travelling down a straightway at 200mph with 2.5 g's pressing against your chest it doesn't matter if you're driving an F1 or NASCAR vehicle the pressure is still the same. Schmacher will go down in the pantheons of the sport as being the best of the modern era and can be favored comparably with that Goliath of NASCAR Dale Earnhardt who reigned supremely amongst his peers. Schumacher to my mind though remains a favorite purely by his demeanor and that he has always been gracious towards his opponents no matter what the situation.
Roger Federer at present is the pre-eminent player among the ATP players' circuit at present and is likely to remain so for a considerable time into the future. Although many would have you believe that Rafael Nadal is the better player based upon Nadal's record this year alone. But one year alone does not a career make. Federer has been able to maintain this outstanding record of achievement over the past 4 years. And it has been this alone that sets him apart from his peers. He meets the challenges head on and never seems to be discouraged always conducting himself in a gentlemanly fashion. Federer's performances in Grand Slam tournaments are what legends are made of and to date he's compiled a daunting record , amassing 8 Grand Slam titles in the process , and is only one victory away from joining a select few that have won all of tennis's majors. The one title missing from his trophy cabinet is the French singles title. Four Wimbledon singles titles, 2 Australian, 2 U.S. Open's are his calling card in the slams and counting, as he embarks on winning a third US Open singles title. His closest adversary in competition at present is Spaniard, Rafael Nadal. And their rivalry appears to be on the way to joining others that have been immortalized in print and on film. McEnroe v Borg, Connors v McEnroe, Borg v Connors, Lendl v Borg and Sampras v Agassi are part of the post modern eras most exhilarating tennis. Undoubtedly it will be Federer's ambition to add the French title as a postscript to his already illustrious career and become member of the 'grand slam club'. And then to make an allout assault on surpassing Sampras' tally of 14 Grand Slam singles titles.
Tiger Woods is undoubtedly the most recognized sports personality in the world today. And his success along the way hasn't gone unnoticed by the fans or public at large. Wherever he competes the galleries are filled with spectators from all walks of life, old and young alike crossing all ethnic barriers. And that seems to be the attraction of one Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods. He encompasses so many things and to a differing degree, that we the public love him for this. Despite his background of being a minority he hasn't really played upon this fact choosing to let his accomplishments speak for itself. Many question the fact as to what Woods' beliefs or political stances are on a varying list of subjects. But one thing we do know that he is very passionate about children and the fact that they receive a good education from the ground up. And that can be witnessed by his philanthropical efforts through his Tiger Woods Foundation which enables children from all walks of life to pursue an education through learning at the earliest levels . It has long been felt a goal of his to make sure that a child isn't denied the tools to learn and adapt to the surroundings they find themselves in.
Woods' accomplishments on the course is what has driven to the sport of golf to become a part of the daily staple of viewing on the television whenever he's competing and in contention. Tournament sponsors are aware of this and are beholding to Woods for the exposure. This has been mutually beneficial to both Woods and the various corporate sponsors from around the world who have some sort of tie in with Woods. It has made him an extremely wealthy individual and estimates of his wealth are impossible to judge but Forbes magazine puts it in excess of $ 350 million dollars and rapidly climbing with each major win. Having just turned thirty, Woods had the enviable pleasure of having won his 50th professional tournament and done in a fashion not unlike his mentor Jack Nicklaus with whom Woods has been comparably judged. Because it is with Nicklaus' accomplishments that Tiger sees where the future lies and and a new legacy begins. Jack's 18 majors over the course of his career is the yardstick that the purists will judge Tiger's greatness on . He's well on his way to pursuing this record and quite possibly surpassing it barring injuries or some other unforeseen circumstance. Woods' majestic victory at Hoylake for The Open was his 11th major victory and leaves him in a position to march towards his goal.

At 36-0 Floyd Mayweather Jr brings an unabashed showmanship to the ring and his exuberance is infectious. He's a talent that has brought an excitement back to the sport that has been lacking in recent years.
He's the current IBF Welterweight champion (147lbs) and Jr. Welterweight champion (140lbs) and has been a multiple division champion. The much anticipated fight that the fans are awaiting for is the matchup between he and the current light middleweight champion Oscar De La Hoya who see the fight as being his last before retiring. De La Hoya as the IBF champion is well aware of the inherent danger he faces in taking on the challenge of facing Mayweather Jr. who's viewed as the best pound for pound boxer in the world at present. A mantle that at one time De La Hoya could claim to be his but the younger Mayweather has usurped the teacher. He is now clearly a fan favorite and the tenacity with which he dispatches his opponents has many fans rooting for him whenever he fights.
Mayweather has met all challengers whatever the weight and has dealt with them suitable aplomb, either by knockout or going the distance and winning by a unanimous decision. A supremely gifted and talented fighter Mayweather Jr has never lacked confidence and lets you know it in an unabashed manner. He may sometimes deride his opponent but never in such a way as to incite hatred or ridicule. However he's not been afraid to confront an opponent when the trash talking emanates from the other side of the ring. It's his ambition to be thought as one of the best ever to lace up the gloves in the ring and he's well on the way to realizing this dream. The contenders within the division shy away from meeting the brash young fighter, so he's left to make the challenges himself and eagerly waits each bout with anticipation.
