There's a distinct difference it's said between running a business entity and that of a sports franchise. And nowhere is this apparently more evident than within the confines of motor sports. But at this juncture I'm not so sure.

NASCAR is said to be in a healthy state and its popularity as it now stands has never been as popular amongst its fans as it is at present. There's been some discord amongst some fans but in no way is it meant to be an overall indictment of the sport. There's as always a perfunctory acceptance that at times not everything will be to the convenience of the fans. But this is something that happens within all sports.

In the space of a decade NASCAR has become the most fan friendly entertainment and watched sport by way of overall attendance. It's a multi billion dollar enterprise that encompasses a wide ranging variety of entities. All of this is ran under the auspices of the France family and its subsdiaries and other cross holdings. The tentacles of NASCAR cover a wide array of the sport's horizon. But it is the prestige of the Sprint Cup series that brings it , its highest visibility to the public and its fan base. Major corporate sponsors line up to have their names attached to the various teams within the upper echelons of the sport. And those corporate behemoths read like the who's who of corporate America.

And the teams and the drivers have now become the darlings of Madison Avenue. The more prominent drivers are and have become an advertizer's dream. Dale Earhardt Jr, Jimmie Johnson , Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart can now earn more off the track by way of endorsements than winning on the track. And that has not been to the detriment of their teams or the sponsors either. And it has helped that they're perceived as winners on and off the track. Maybe not so in the case of Dale Jr however ? As he's still yet to emulate his father and win a championship. But be that as it may it's the drivers that everyone comes to see and adore. The race vehicles are secondary to the events themselves.

There now seems to be an ominous cloud over the sport as the economy faces a volatile period of uncertainty. And it certainly doesn't help that the big three domestic auto manufacturers seemingly face a financial morass ahead of them. Their balance sheets overall aren't all that healthy , despite what we're told to the contrary. And they face an uphill battle with regard to their foreign counterparts as to competitiveness and sales within the domestic market. But what if anything has to be unnerving for the sport could well be the fact that its biggest sponsor Sprint is now facing a severe financial crisis. The telecommunications giant is losing subscribers at an unprecedented rate and at the same time will be laying off a large part of it workforce in order to save money . That initself may well be a good thing at this juncture. But it's liable to send an ominous sign to the hierarchy within NASCAR.

With an economy said to be in the throe's of recession one can only wonder what the anticipation will be amongst some of the more notable corporate sponsors and how it may well adversely affect the sport. Contractual obligations being what they are it's clear that some sponsors are liable to uproot themselves within the sport should things become worse for them in the foreseeable future. And for the Sprint Corporation and NASCAR that could prove to be ominous. The business relationship between the two entities has been extremely profitable and equitable in many ways. But for how long can Sprint keep its end of the bargain as of now ? It seems only a matter of time before we might hear of rumblings between the two. Because in all probability Sprint may well look to extricate itself from its agreement to continue to sponsot the Cup Series. And although there may well be a number of corprorate suitors who'd be willing to take over from Sprint. Would they be willing to pay NASCAR's asking price ? That's the question that a willing sponsor would have to be asking at this juncture .

In an economic turndown budgetary belts are titghtened just like within a home. And the sponsors are looking to get the biggest ban*g for their buck when it comes to their advertizing dollars and high profile visibility. This may well not only affect the business side as to the operation of NASCAR. But it'll certainly give it some cause for concern not only within its hierarchy but for the teams also. Because there's bound to worries amongst not only the larger teams within the sport but also the smaller teams and those who operate on a shoestring budget and under the graces of the sponsors. Results counts but it's the money spent by the teams that flows from the coffers of the sponsors that in the determines their success.
