I don't know that Billy Donovan deferred to his wife and family before making his original decision to leave the University Of Florida to go to coach the Orlando Magic. But it'd appear now that he's having 'cold feet' much to the surprise of those who know him best. It's been all the talk up and down the dials of sports talk radio stations across the nation. Everyone has had their view as to what's going on with regard to the situation. But for now it's just speculation as to why Donovan has changed his mind. One thing for sure though is that his integrity is somewhat now in tatters as he's made himself to be asinine infront of not only the organization that pursued him but the college he left behind to supposedly pursue his dream.

After having won a second consecutive NCAA collegiate national championship it'd seem appropriate for Donovan to ride off into the sunset with all the accolades that were bestowed upon him. Even if there was assumed to be some tension between he and the college over him quite possibly returning with a renewed deal. As it was felt that he might well have been leveraging himself against the university and the offers that he percieved that he'd no doubt fell would be coming his way once he had made the announcement that he was leaving the sleepy confines of Gainesville , Florida. With that being said the Orlando Magic were in search of a new coach having fired their existing coach Brian Hill in the postseason, after they were beaten in the playoffs. The Magic under the auspices of their GM Otis Smith sought out the services of Donovan as it was deemed that he'd be the appropriate choice and the ideal candidate for the vacant position. Signing Donovan was seen as the ideal way for the Magic to create a renewed interest in the franchise. And it was thought that it'd certainly help in the negotiatons with regard to a new arena to be built in downtown Orlando. Their present home being the TD Price Warerhouse Center. The franchise and city of Orlando as well the Orange County goverment had been at a standstill in these negotiations because of the apparent lack of will and interest shown by all parties concerned to get things done. With the high profiled name of Donovan being attached to the project as coach of the Magic. It was felt that the necessary votes and the funding and financing would be in place to start the project.

A rather indecisive Billy Donovan is seen leaving the TD Waterhouse Center after having addressed the press with regard to his wanting to return to coaching the University Of Florida. He's beset by the press and photographers who are keen not only to get a picture of the less than remorseful coach but to also get more of thorough explanation as to his decision. It obviously now will cost the Magic franchise more than just money should Donovan renege on the contract he signed so willingly with the Orlando. As it was seen a great coup in getting the much heralded coach to agree to become the Magic's next head coach. Politicians asides, there was a new found fervour within the organisation now , not known or seen since the heydays of O'Neal and Hardaway. When the Magic were flying high and had made it to an NBA final. Within forty eight hours of having accepted the position , it was rumoured that Donovan was having second thoughts. Albeit that he had already signed a contract with the team. The contract in question was to the tune of $27.5m over 5 years. Well in excess of the $3m per year that Donovan was said to be on offer or would be earning at the time of his departure from the Gators, in Gainesville.
Whatever the reason for his changing his mind at this juncture is now purely open to speculation. But the rumours are rife that Donovan had felt that he'd made gross error in judgement in deciding to leave the university. They'll no doubt willingly accept back their " prodigal son ." As it'd no doubt mean that they could start afresh with everything being back to what they once were. But what above all should that indicate to us about Donovan both as a coach and as a man ? Can and is he to be trusted in the future ? Especially when it'll come to the dealing with and recruiting of young players. It's not as iof he can say to player " trust me I'm in it and I'll be here for the long haul. " As clearly his word was not his bond !If anything Donovan has not only been disingenuous to not only the fans of the Magic franchise but also to the people around him that trusted him the most. To be more precise his family and the public and press in general. He may well gain a lot of sympathy from the most ardent of Gators' fans and some empathy from some members of the sporting general public. But to my mind he's not deserving of this one bit , as his integrity and demeanor has been less than forthright from the start. He'd implied as such that he wanted a new direction with which to take his career to the next level. And coaching amongst the professional ranks was seen the best way forward for him. Now with this latest assignation unfolding infront of our very eyes it's plain to see that Donovan can't be taken at his word to do anything right. Let alone stand up and be truthful from the outset !
