So this is what it is all about a trophy that stands no more than 18" tall but has an reverance about it, and that has the golfers of Europe and the United States' players clamouring to represent their country every two years. Well this year the tournament is being held at the K Club, Straffan, Co. Kildare, Ireland. The trophy in question is the Ryder Cup.
Golf was our last bastion of sports supremacy on the international landscape. Well not any more as we're being taught a lesson at present by the Europeans on their home turf. The score at present now stands at 10-6 in favor of Europe. Needing only 4 1/2 pts to secure the Cup for their sixth successive victory in their last seven tries the Europeans are in the driving seat as the singles format will determine the outcome as it normally does.

Ian Woosnam and Tom Lehman are the respective captains of the US and European teams. As well as being the captains they're also adversaries as it will be their decisions that will likely decide the outcome of the event. Woosnam in knowing that he stands at the pinnacle of guiding the Europeans to victory will be out to settle for a quick knockout punch of attaining the necessary points to secure a victory. His players have performed commendably and have not let up against the Americans. On the other hand the Americans have been somewhat pensive in their play and it could be seen during their putting woes.
Needless to say that there has been a certain amount of crticism levelled at the Americans because of their lack of team play and also that the team was filled with a number of rookies who aren't used to the pressure of the various formats played during the Ryder Cup. A lot of that criticism has come from former player and now tv analyst Johnny Miller, who can be very outspoken. He felt that the team lacked the necessary preparedness and experience needed in order combat the Europeans. Lehman has not replied to the comments of Miller but it has certainly got back to the players. Whether or not this incites the players to perform better will remain to be seen. Lehman will now have to count on his experienced veterans to guide the rookies and provide the momentum needed to usurp the Europeans.

Should the Europeans wrap up the victory as expected where will this leave the American sports psyche ? As during the past couple of weeks we've seen our men and women fail at the US Open tennis tournament and seen both the men's and women's basketball teams claim the bronze medal at the World Championships. The US Davis Cup team stand on the verge off losing to the Russians in that particular team tennis competition, as they now hold a 2-1 lead, needing only one more win to knock us out of the competition and relegate us to the second tier for qualifying for next year's competition. It is of particular concern for many as considered ourselves the dominant force in these particular sports. Well that cannot be the case any longer as the rest of the world has caught up to us. Should we be ashame of this ? Off course not , as we should relish the competition being brought by our adversaries.
What we can't afford to be is complacent , as in doing so we'll only lay ourselves to ridicule and excuses for our failures. That was never the case before and shouldn't be now !
