The tribute for Billy Jean King last night was worthy of a champion who has served her sport graciously and who has heightened the acceptance of women within sport by her deeds on and off the court.
Her endeavors to heighten the popularity of women's sport has meant that women can now feel accepted in an arena that where they were once looked upon as mere fodder for the jocular press that was overrun by men who weren't willing to see change. However through her resilient hard work and persistance she persevered to see her dream come to fruition. And it goes without saying that her presence has made a difference for women in society as a whole and not just in the sporting arena.
Her infamous match with Bobby Riggs during the 70's did more for the female agenda than any protest had done before or since with the exception of Roe vs. Wade. And although taken as such at first to be a comedic farce the end result was that it sent an emotional tidal wave of sentiment thsat was to become far reaching and widespread.
So it would seem only fitting that America's most beloved female athlete ever, should be accorded this benefit of having her name placed upon the National Tennis Center in New York . Which will be now known as the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center.
