Junior Seau has sought fit to return to football quickly unretiring, having been appproached by the N ew England Patriots to become a part of their roster. Undoubtedly it was a win win for both parties, as Seau was supposedly in need of a job and the Patriots were hurting because of a slew of injuries to their linebacking corps. So lets give a big hearty welcome to the newest member of the New England Patriots ......blah !

Seau's insistence that he's returning to play football as he hadn't retired but was due to the fact he was wanted and that for him it was a new beginning. And it will be a new beginning once a physical has been passed and a contract agreed upon. It will be of great interest to see if Seau can reproduce his once dynamic form considering the number of injuries that he's suffered over the last couple of years.
Evander Holyfield returned to the ring tonight after a forced layoff because of failed medical examinations due to health reasons. Having been granted a license by the state of Texas, Holyfield faced journeyman Jeremy Bates (21-12-1) in a 10 round bout at the American Airlines Arena , Dallas,Tx. He made quick work of Bates in a 2 round TKO , looking somewhat impressive. But we shouldn't make too much of Holyfield's display as he himself had come off a three fight losing streak prior to his layoff. It begs to question what is Holyfield still doing in the ring as he's suffered numerous concussions in his most recent fights including bleeding on the brain. Having had his license revoked by the New Jersey State Athletic Commission as well as Nevada's and New York's State Athletic Commissions, Holyfield sought to have his license reinstated but to no avail. He used the legal system to challenge this but wasn't successful in his attempt. But to the dismay of many he was granted a license in the state of Texas, after satisfying their state athletic commission that he was fit to box after supplying them with medical transcripts and x-rays to prove his point. Holyfield's none acceptance that his skills are diminishing and the pronounced drawl in his speech are clear signs that this former champion's days are numbered. His belief that he'll recapture those golden days and with it the World Heavyweight Championship appears to be the driving force behind his relentless pursuit. He risks permanent damage to his health and well being and the fact that closest to him see no reason to advise him to give up his pursuit leads me to believe that Evander would rather die in the ring a warrior. Rather than retire to the relative prosperity of family life.
Forty four year old Roger Clemens chose to hold the Astros' season hostage. Whilst he contemplated returning from retirement to a Houston team that had every intention of competing for a spot in the post season, if not for the NL Central division title. Having competed in the World Baseball Classic, Clemens spent the next few months wallowing in self pity while his teammates were mired in midseason mediocrity playing sub .500 baseball. Had Clemens made a commitment to return to the team earlier who knows what might have been. Since his return Clemens' record has been none too inspiring as witnessed below;
ERA 2.71 W-L 4-4 SV 0 K's 55
Granted he hasn't always had the run support but at times Clemens has been rocked by the opposing batters. While his accomplishments are gargantuan 7 Cy Young awards, 2 World Series Championship rings,341 wins and counting. Clemens is all but assured of being a first ballot Hall of Famer. All this asides Clemens' return to the Astros has been somewhat largely a disappointment even by his own standards as so much was expected and so little was given in return. Clemens' pro-rated salary of aproximately $14,500,000 doesn't quite equate to the Astros' desires but Roger has always been a self absorbed individual who thought about nothing but himself.
So often we want our heroes to ride off into the sunset and compete no more but it's becoming apparent that many of them can't bare to the leave the game they once graced so heroically.
