It has become extremely clear that we can no longer take things for granted. Last night having not having to go into work I decided upon taking in a documentary on one of the cable channels. This documentary dealt with the world of female bodybuilders and the task they face in preparing for competition. Many of the females competing were spectacular physical specimens. And it was hard to discern whether or not what I was witnessing on tv was that of a female or male performing in competition.
Many of these females see themselves as being the equal of their male counterparts as they compete in a world that was once deemed the sole domain of men. But the competition amongst women has become very competitive and competitions are now being held worldwide. It is now eliciting women from all walks of life to compete and in various age categories and weight classes.
In this steroid induced era it is hard to see these women as equals as we view them as mothers, daughters, sisters , neices and above all as companions. But on looking at some of the contestants one can feel that we might be looking at an abnormal human specimen.
Many of these pictures might elicit howls of laughter from many because of the masculinity in the appearance of many of the females but they're as as serious about their chosen profession as any man competing would be. They see it as a way of breaking into a world where the competition can be fierce but the rewards can be extremely generous. Many of the top competitors can earn well in excess of six figures in prize money. But the real money is earned through endorsements that are forthcoming from various sponsors , namely nutritional supplement manufacturers, fitness magazine publishers, swimwear accessory manufacturers and the possibility of breaking into the entertainment arena.
One of the most famous of the female bodybuilders, fitness personalities to emerge was Corey Everson. Having won the Miss Olympia 6 times , Everson was able to parlay her fame into a fairly successful business empire. She's also a contributor to a number of fitness magazines
