Well It's   The  Only  Thing  Vocal  You'll  Hear  Out  Of  The  Mouth Of  A

Mets' Player  Anything Else'd  Be Considered  Immature  Don't  You Think ?

 

 

 

 

 

 

Well  as  we  approach  the beginning of  Spring  Training  we're  already  hearing  some  rather  encouraging   news  from   newly signed  Mets' closer  Francisco Rodriguez.  Not  content  with  having  signed  with  the  team   the  player   has  already  to  cast  his  bread  amongst   the  waters  by  making  the  announcement   that  his  team is   the  team  to  beat  in the  NL  East and  as well  within  all  of baseball.

One   would   laugh  were  it   not  for the  fact   that K-Rod  is actually   serious  with  his assertive  statement.   When  one  considers  how the  season  has  ended  for  the  New  York  Mets  over  the  last   two  years.  Anything  said  by  a  player  within  this  particular   organization   has  now   got to  be   taken  with a  grain  of  salt.  Idiocy  and  immaturity   seems  to   know  no   limits   when   it  comes  to  this  organization .  And   perhaps  it's a reflection as  to  the  fact  that  they're   viewed  as   the   poor  neighbors  of  their   more   sought  after  compatriot   within   the  city,  in the  form  of  the  New York  Yankees.  They've   no  leadership  or  backbone   and   much  of  that has  been  predicated  on the   fact  that   not   has  the  coaching   staff  been  completely  unable   to  control   the   downward  spiral  of  the  team.  But  what  has   become  even   more  apparent    is  that   for   all  of  the  money  spent   on   major   free  agents  over  the last  few  years.   This   team  has  regressed    rather  than   improve.

If  it's  one  thing   that   we   can  all   count  on   concerning  the  team  is  that   come  the  months  of  October   onwards. Is the   mere  fact  that   they   imploded  and   became   about   as  aggressive  in their   play  as  members  of  the   French  Army  would   be ,  were  they   on  the  field   of  battle.   Backbones  aren't  a  part  of  the  arsenal   when   it  comes   to  neither   and   more   so  in  the   case  of   the  New  York  Mets.    In  Omar  Minaya    they  may  well  possess  one  of   the  worst   general  managers   in  all   of  baseball.  Though   there  may  well  be   some   out  there   whose  performance  may  well  have   been  the   equal  of  Minaya's   if   not   worse.   I'll  leave  that   for   you  all   to  decide.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Well  what  can   we  expect   from  within  the  division as  a  whole  ?  The  NL  East   does  possess  the  current   World  Series  champions  in  the  Philadelphia  Phillies.   And  then  we  also  have  the  Atlanta  Braves,  Florida Marlins  and  the  Washington  Nationals .   The   feeling  however  is  that  the  Phillies  will  be  the  team  that  most  feel  has  the  best   chance  to win  the  division  and  also  make the  playoffs.   They're   very  much   a  cohesive  unit.   And  in Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins  ,  Chase  Utley   they   do  possess  one   of  the  more   explosive   offensive   triumvirates  within   all  of  baseball.   And   as  prodigious  a  talent   that  Howard   has  become   there  is  a  feeling  that  he's   yet   to  reach  his   full   potential.    Rollins   though   understated   is   very  much   the  meat  and   bones   type  of  player.  He  lets  his   game   do  the   talking   for  him  on  the  field .   And   Utley   just   keeps  on  doing  what  he   does  best  .  And  that's   to  produce   runs  and   home  runs   at  an   astonishing   pace   during  the  season.

That's   not  to  say  that  their   pitching   is  to  be  ignored.   In  Cole   Hamels  they   may  well  have  one of     the  very   best  young   starting   pitchers   in  the  league.    And   on  the  closer's   mound  a  rejuvenated  Brad  Lidge  who  was  a  castoff   from  the  Houston  Astros.   With  Lidge's  no   nonsense attitude  and   the  fact  that  he's  merely   just  striking  out  players  like   Britney   Spears  has  hit  singles  on  a  regular basis.  It  can  be  said  that   Lidge  is   very  much  an  asset to  this   team.

As   to  the  Mets   it's   easy   to view   them  as  such  as  a  potential   World  Series'  candidate.  But when  they've   fallen   more  times   than  we'd   all   care   to  count.  It's  hard  to   see   them  winning   it all  much  less  taking   Rodriguez's   statement   all   too   seriously.    If   we'd  heard  it   once    we'll   hear  it again  and  again.   But   when   the   team   does    fail  it's  rare   that   you'll   actually   see  that   player   come   forward  and   actually  explain   what   went    wrong  as   far  as  the   season   went.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The   same   faces   are   still   there   on  this   team  and   much   like   their   crosstown  neighbors   the  New  York  Yankees.  It's   filled  highly  paid    superstars.   Carlos  Delgado  the  ageless  wonder   coming   off   one  his  most  productive   seasons   in  ages.  Jose Reyes   a  burgeoning  superstar, Carlos  Beltran   and   David  Wright  are  all   players   who   one  would   feel   are  more  than  capable  of  leading  this   team   against   all   types  of  adversity.  Unfortunately  however   for  the  Mets  and  their   fans   this   has  yet  to  see  this   materialize   into  anything   sustentative.     All  their   fans  can  rely  on  is   are  those   years  when   they   ruled  the   roost  and  their   name   became  the  talk  of  the  town.   And  one  considers   that   you  have to   go  back to  1986 and  theikr  victory  over the  Boston Red Sox   (4-3)  and   with Ray Knight being  named  the Series  MVP.  You  can    well  understand  not the   fans'  yearning  and   craving  for  another   World  Series  .  But  that  too  of  the  ownership  under the  Wilpon  family.   Twenty  two   years  on   and  it's  still  something   that   must  be   haunting    Mets'   fans .   They've   returned   once  to  the  World  Seies   in  2000 . But  they  failed   , having   succumbed  to  the  New  York  Yankees  in the  Subway  Series   4-1.  Derek  Jeter   being  the  hero  there  in  the  series   itself  and  was  crowned   series'  MVP.

As   to   who   the  likely   winners   will   be,  will  be   open  to  debate.  But  it  has  to  be   said  that  the  fans  are   hoping  that  the  division  won't   just be  another   whereby   we   see  the   Mets   get  off   to  a  fast  start. And   then   fall   merely  because  of exhaustion   and   the   fact  that  they   don't  possess   the  qualities   needed  to  win  it  all.    Rodriguez   for  his   part   has  got  to  prove  that   last   season's  bravado   performance   with the  Los  Angeles  Angels was  not  an   aberration  where  he  obliterated  the   single  season  saves'  record.    A  lot  of   talk  will   get   you   noticed   but  it's   your   actions   of  the  field  of    play  that   tends  to  win  approval   and   all  of the   acclaim   from  the  fans.    And   that's   something  the   Mets   haven't   done  in  a  hell  of   a  long  time   at  any  level   in  the  game   of  baseball.  

    

One  Against Four , Four Against  One Someone's  Got To Win ..?

 

 

 

 

Well   tonight  the  number  one  ranked  University of Connecticut  take  on the number  four ranked Pitt  Panthers  in  a   game  that's  meant  to   be  one  of  those  that'll  either  make  or  break    the Huskies'  season.    The  men's  college  basketball  season   has  generated  a   great  deal  of  interest.   And   when  you've  got a  number  of  teams   playing  a  highly competitive  brand  of  basketball. It's   games  such  as  these  that   we   all   look  to ,   to  see    what  progress  is  being   made  by  the  teams. Whose   names are  being  bandied   about  as   serious   contenders   for   national   honors.   Never  mind  the   fact  that   conference and  in some   cases   divisional  titles   will  be  up  for  grabs  by  way of  tournaments.

But  the  daddy  of  them  all   offcourse   is  the  national  championship   known  to   us  as  all as  the  NCAA  Tournament.    March   Madness   and   all  that  it  brings   may  well   be  just  about the  most exciting   time  of the year   in  sports  ,  other  than  the  Superbowl  itself.   To  my   mind  it  is  by  far  the  best   sporting  event   in the  country.  It  may  well  not   garner  the  viewership  overall  of that  of  the Superbowl  itself.  But   in sheer   terms  of intensity  and  excitement    the  event  itself   cannot  be    beaten.

The   game  itself  tonight  will  see  a  matchup  of  two  of    the  most  heralded   players  in  men's  college  basketball.   For  the  Huskies   we'll  see   Hasheem  Thabeet    whose   defensive   play  asides   apart   from   demonstratively   ferocious.  It  can  be  said   that   he  also  possesses  a   brevitas   on  the  offensive   side  of  the  ball   as  well.    For  the  Panthers   we  will   get  to   see  DeJuan  Blair   who's   making  a  real   name  for   himself  with     the  program.    This   not  only   bodes  well   for  the  aspirations  of the  team  in   the  regular  season  . But   also    to  the     postseason  as  well. Where  it's  expected    that  they'll  make  their   presence  felt.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The  short   term   goals   for    both    teams    tonight   is   to  have  a  good showing   infront   of  a  national  television audience.   And  if  nothing   else   remind  those   with   aspirations  of   a  national   title    that  they   well  have  to  come  through   one  of  these   two  teams  ,  if  not  both.   That   being   said  with the   national  championship   just   around  the corner. There  are  more   immediate  things  to  be  taken   care  of    in   terms   of  a  divisional   championship and   then  there  are   the  provisional  championship  tournaments.   The  primary   goal  however  is  that  of  the  national  title  itself.  And   these  two   teams  are  playing  well   enough   that  they   can  be   placed  within  that mix.

With  Thabeet   coming   off   a   stupendous   display over the weekend   where  against  Seton Hall  he   was  a  one man  wrecking   crew.    His full  arsenal  was   on  display   with   25 points  ,  20  rebounds  ,  9 blocked  shots  , and  an  assist  in   the  Huskies   62-54  win .  And  one can  very  well   see   the   reason  why they're   viewed   as  the   best  team  in  the  nation.   Though  it  can  be   said  that   there  are   those   who  might   well   say    that  the  Oklahoma   Sooners   are   playing    just  as  exciting  a  brand  of   basketball  as   their    rivals   in the   Big  East.  And   with the  Big  East   at present   having    four   teams   ranked   inside  the   top  10. It  can  be  said  the  bragging   rights  at    present    does  belong  to  them.

Pittsburgh   for  its  part comes  into  the   game  with   Blair   playing   solidly.  And  he  has  let  it  be    known  that he's  not  prepared to  back  down  when  it  comes    to  facing   Thabeet   on  the  court    tonight.  So   this   duel  will   present    us  with    two   erstwhile  players   who   aren't  prepared   to     give  up   any  space   on  the   court.   And  as  physical  as  they   both  can  be   ,  I   for   one am  expecting  this   to   be   more  of  a   brawl   than  we've  come   to expect.   The  fact  of the  matter  is    the  Huskies   haven't  been  tested   in  quite  a  while.  They've   raised the  level  of their play as  and  when  needed .  And   it  has  been  primarily   to Thabeet  to  whom    they've  looked  for  not  only   his   physical  presence   but   also   his   leadership  on the  court.  However the  loss  of  guard  Jerome  Dyson  may   well   alter  the  way   how   we'll  see   the  Huskies  play   tonight.  His  play   along  with  that  of  Thabeet's  has   provided a   cushion   for   others   to   ramp  up   their   game   on the  team.   For   which  it  has   served   coach  Jim  Calhoun  well.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For  Pitt  their  quartet  of   Sam Young, DeJuan Blair, Levance  Fields and   Jermaine Dixon  will  have to  be  on  top   of their    game   if  they're  to  withstand  everything   that  the  Huskies  will  be  throwing at  them.  If they're  made   to   play  catch  up    ,  then  it   may well  prove  to  be   too   much    for  the  team.  If  they   can  keep    the  game  close  then  it   augurs  well   for   them as  a  whole.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

As   to  how  the  season  will    fare   for  both    teams .  At this   juncture  with  them   both  playing  well   enough   to  garner   a  lot  of  attention  nationally.  It   has  to  be   said  that   with  the  regular  season  being  what  it  is.  The   postseason within   college   basketball    this  year   will   be   extremely   interesting  and    very  intriguing   in  more  ways  than  one.     So   many   teams   having   been  playing  above themselves.   And  there've  been  others   who   seemingly  have   lost   steam  and    are  a  bare  facsimile  of   themselves .  Making   it all the  more   surprising  as  to  what  we've   all  witnessed  this   season within the college   game.  So   much  so  that  when  the   brackets   come   about   for   the  NCAA  Tournament.   We  could   all  be   in   for  one   or  two   surprises   to  say  the  very  least.

         

Nate  Robinson   Wins  Slam  Dunk  Competition  But  Spike  Lee  Still Wants  His Money   Back . 

 

 

 

 

Don't  get  me  wrong    but   the  All  Star  Game   Weekend  is  not  what  it  once  was.   OK so  last  year   Dwight  Howard  with  the  adorning   Superman  cape   won  it  in   spectacular   fashion  last  year.    However  this  year   even  with  the   presence  of  Nate   Robinson  a  former   winner.  Overall  what   we   witnessed   wasn't  exactly  innovative.    It  was  more  showmanship   more  than  anything  else.

Robinson  for  his  part   is   about  the  only  thing  other  than   David  Lee  worth  watching  on  a   New  York  Knicks' team  that  under   coach  Mike  D'Antoni   has  yet  to  find  some  semblance of  consistency.   They're  a  team   that   finds  it   hard  to  play  defense.  And   it's a  reflection  of   the  somewhat   cavalier   attitude  that   D'Antoni  has  when  it  comes  to the  game.  It's  primarily  offense  and    the  pursuance  of   outscoring   your  opponent.   It  sums  up  his  persona  and  that  of  this   team  completely.    If  at  the  end  of  the   day   all  that  we  can  say   about   Robinson  and  his   career   in the  NBA .  Is  that   he   won  two  NBA  Slam   Dunk  competitions.  It  hasn't   boded  well  for   his   career.   One   can   only  surmise  what    renowned   director   Spike  Lee  must  be  thinking.  The   long   time   New  York   Knicks'   fan  hasn't  had   much   to  smile  about  when  it  comes  to  his  avid   support   of  the   team.

Still  a  commercially   viable   director   it  has  to  be  said  that   for  all  of  the  controversy  that has  surrounded  him.   He's   more    now known  for   his  sideline   support  of  the  team  when  he's  in  attendance  at   Madison  Square   Garden.   Never  mind  the   fact  that  as owners  the   Dolan   family  and   head  of  Basketball  Operations  Donnie  Walsh    are  still   no   doubt  assessing  the   talent   on  this  team.    On  review  there  are  some  pieces  on  this   roster  that's   worth   retaining  but  there   are   pieces  that  is   nothing   more than  pieces  of   driftwood.    And  as  we   know   the  Knicks  are   looking   to  the  2010  season.   Wherein  a  slew   of    elite   free  agents    will be   on  the market.    The   prized   assets  there'll  be   Dwyane   Wade  and  LeBron  James.

In the  Atlantic Division  standings  the   New York  Knicks  (21-31) sit  23  games  behind  the  division  leading  Boston Celtics (44-11)  and  just  above   the  cellar  dwellers in  the  guise  of   the  Toronto  Raptors (21-34).   And  with   just   31  games   left   to  the  regular  season.  It's  becoming   distinctly  hard  to   view  the  Knicks  as  a  playoff  team.   A  sub .500   record    quite   possibly   could   put  them  on  the  cusp  of  it  all.      But   it's   impossible  to   view   that   now  as  a  reality.  This   team  isn't   capable  of  showing  the  sort  of  consistency   that'd  be   required  to  make  that  at  all   possible.  They've  all  too  infrequently  showed  that  they're   still  aren't   capable  of  playing  as  a  cohesive  unit.   And   most   certainly   even  with  the  addition  of  someone  of  the  caliber  of  either   James  or  Wade.   It's  hard  to  view  how  this   team   could  become  competitive.    Especially   where   the  players  are   all  too   ill   disciplined.     It    may  well   be the  coaching  of   D'Antoni  himself.  But  the  basketball  IQ of   this   team  is  way  below   average.   It's   sad  indictment  of  this  team    and   the   travails   that   he   has  gone  through.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

One  can  only  wonder   if   Spike  Lee   must  be  thinking  about   asking   for   a  refund   from the   team.     It'd appear   obvious   that  he's  not  getting  his  money's  worth  when   it  comes  to    entertainment   value  from the  team.  But   it  may  well  be   that  he's   looking   at  this   all  as   a  plot   for  a  future   movie ?    God   know it's  been a  while    since  Spike  has  had  a  commercial  or  critical  hit  in  Hollywood.   Perhaps a  movie  about  the  present   day  Knicks   could   provide  some   commercial  success  for  the  Lee.   As  to  the  Knicks   it  may  well  provide  their   fans   with    something    more   acceptable   than  the   product that  they're   presently   being  served  up   at  and   away   from  Madison  Square  Garden.

That  being   said   with   Robinson  having   won  the  competition  with a  rather  unspectacular   dunk  whereby  he  leapt  above   the  shoulders  of  6' 11"  Howard.  It   tells  you  all   that  you   need  to  know  concerning  the  event.   In  light  of  that  the   Three Point   Shooting  Competition  was   nothing   more  than a   snoozefest.   The   All  Star  Game   weekend  may   well  be   something   of   a  showcase   for  the  league   to  make  its  players   more   accessible  to  the  fans. 

 

 

What  Price   Now  To  The  Keys To  The  Kingdom ?  

 

 

Sacramento  Kings  and   their  billionaire  owners    Joe  and Gavin Maloof.  The  family  of   Lebanese  decent  have   a  diversified   group  of   business  holdings.  These  range   from  hotels to  casinos ,  beverage   transportation , banking   and  their  prized  assets  of  the    Sacramento  Kings  and  Sacramento Monarchs  of  the  NBA and   WNBA  respectively. Joe  and  Gavin  Maloof ,  owners  of  the   Sacramento  King,  The Palm   Hotel  in  Las Vegas  and  many  other   various   business  entities.

However   over the last  few   years   the  family   and  the  guidance   Joe  and  Gavin   have  struggled  with  the  financial  constraints  with  regard to  the  Kings and  the  arena   they  play  in.   They've   looked  to   the  city  of  Sacramento   in  assisting  them  in  either   renovating  the  ARCO Arena  or  perhaps  by way  of  a  bond  issue   to  raise  enough  capital   for  the  building  of  a new  structure.  With   cities , counties   and   states across  the  country   suffering   under  either  budgetary  deficits of   shortfalls in  terms  of  dwindling  revenues.  This  obviously  isn't  the  right  time  for   them to  be  looking  for  some  sort  of  action  from the  city  or  anyone  within the  state  legislature.

The  state  of   California  at  present   has   a  $25bn  budget  deficit.   And  they're   now  looking   to  the  Federal  government   for a  financial  package. In  terms  of  their   own   sought  after   bailout  assistance .   Never   mind  the  fact  that   the  President's   stimulus  package  of  $819 billion   has left   us  all  wondering    whether  or   not   it  will  be  fruitful.    If  it  stands  the  test  of  time  and  works  then  we can  be  thankful.   But  such  are    the  woes  of  the  country  at present   that  we're  all  looking  to   the  government   for  an  answer   that   in  reality   no  one  has  a  succinct  answer to.    

Former  NBA  point guard  and  now  Sacramento  Mayor  Kevin  Johnson.   Johnson  is now  working  hard  in  trying  to  retain  the  Sacramento  Kings  within  the  city. Basketball  at  present   is  making   changes  and   cutbacks   within  its   own  office.   And  across  the  league   franchises  are   looking  at  ways  of  saving  money   but  at  the  same  time  still   remaining  relevant  in  the   eyes  of their   consumers  and   fans.   These  have  been   hard   times   for  the  Kings  and  of  late  the  team  hasn't  seen the  success  of  the   remnants  of  which  were last  seen  when  Chris  Webber,  Mike Bibby  and Peja Stojakovic  were   running  wild  across  the  NBA .  Since   then  it's   been  nothing   but   sheer  abysmal   play  and   the  franchise  as  such  is  now  steeped  in  mediocrity.

 

 

 

 

In the  Pacific  Division  they  sit a  full  32  games  behind  the  division leading  Los  Angeles  Lakers (42-10).    The  Sacramento  Kings (11-43) have  also   seen  the  tumult   that  took  place  when  then  coach   Reggie  Theus  was  abruptly   fired.   Theus  it'd   appear  didn't  command  the  respect  of  the   players. But  what  was  also   clear  was  that   his   coaching   abilities   were  that   of  an  individual  who   really  wasn't  suited  to  NBA.  His  failure  to  communicate   was  alarmingly  transparent and   if  anything  it   was  obvious   that  this  was  the   only  course  of  action that  could've  been  taken  at  the  time.

 

 

The  team  has  struggled  and  will  continue  to  do  so  for  the  remainder  of  the  season.  But  what  now  must  be  of   concern  to  the   fans  and  the Maloofs.  Is   whether  or   not   the   team   can  either  remain   in the  city or   should   the  Maloofs  make  the  decision  to   sell  the  franchise.  If  they  can't   garner  the   financing  for  a  new  stadium  then  the   decision may  well  be  made  to  sell  the  team.  Though  there  remains  another  alternative , it  is  not  one  that  would  sit  well  with  the  fans.   Gavin  and  Joe  could  decide  to  move  the  franchise  altogether.   They   would  be   welcomed   by  a  number of  major   cities   across  the  country   looking to   reinvigorate their   communities  with a  sporting   franchise.  Mounting  losses  to  the  tune  of   $25m-$30m  is   projected  expected  for  this   fiscal  year alone.   The   franchise   lost    $25m last  year and  it's   clear  to   see  that  they  can't  afford  to have   mounting  losses  for  the  foreseeable  future.  Be  that as  it  may   a new  venue isn't  always  the   best   way  to  solve   such   a  problem.     One  can  understand  that  with   renovation of  ARCO Arena  it  would  mean  that  the  could  have   additional   executive  suites  and  create additional  seating  capacity.  And  the  capital   expenditure   would  run  into  several  million   dollars. 

 

 

 

But   it  appears    that  the  Maloofs   feel  the  best  way  forward  and  future   healthy   state  of  the   franchise   is   either  a   new   venue  altogether   or    quite  possibly  for   them   to  move   either  out  of  the  state  or  away   from  the  city  of  Sacramento.   The   city's  mayor  a  former   NBA  player   himself,  in  Kevin  Johnson  is  trying  his   utmost  to  save  the  day.   But   with   financial   and  political  constraints  it's   clear  that  he would  have  to  move   mountains  to  stave  off  the  unrest that'd  be  created  if   government   was   money  was  being   used   to  stave  off   the  moving  of  the  franchise  ,  or   to  be  used   for  the  funding   of  a  new  facility  for  a  professional   sport's   franchise.   Not   with   municipalities  hermorrhaging   money.  And  with   no   clear  means  of  growing   revenues  coming   into  their   coffers.  It'd   be   prudent   for   them   to  spend  their   money   wisely  be it  through  the  issuing   of     bonds    or   through   raising   service  fees.

 

 

  As  this   whole   episode  plays   out   amongst  the  citizens  within  the  community.    The  team  itself   still  struggles   to   some  semblance  of  respectability.   And  it   would  be   quite   easy  to   admit  that  they   could  just   forego   the  season  and   hope   that   come  draft time  they'll   luck   out  and  be  able  to  garner  the  services  of   one  of  elite  players   amongst  the  college  ranks.    Possibly   some one  along  the  lines  of   Blake  Griffin  of   Oklahoma  or   Jeff Teague of  Wake  Forest ,   Hasheem  Thabeet  of   Connecticut.   Quite  possibly  this  may  well  not  be   where  the   franchise  sees  itself  by  way  of   garnering   talent.    But  it's  merely  a  suggestion  not  an  edict.   But it's   clear that   something   needs to  be   done   to  reinvigorate  the  fortunes   of  the   franchise.    Needless  to  say   the  fans   may  well  have   their  own  ideas  as  to  how  they  ought  to  proceed.  The  Maloofs  themselves    do  have  a  tough   decision  to  make.   And  it  is  one  that   won't  sit well  either   way.    But  it's  clear  that  they  can  either  proceed  along  the  path  that  they're   on   or   make   a  complete  change   of   course   which   would  be  of  benefit  to  them.    As  to  what   it'd  mean  to  the   city  of  Sacramento.  I'll  leave  that   for  the   citizens  there  to   mull  over. 

 

    

 

It's  at times  such  as  this   that  we   really   see  how   intertwined   the   world   of   sports   , commerce  and   politics  become.   And  at the  end  of  the  day  it's  not  what   you  know  .  But   who   you   know  in the  end  that  counts.
