Just catching up on some NHL signings which occurred last week that were missed due to the fallout from the Heatley and Kessel trades respectively. The Minnesota Wild brought in some experienced scoring depth for their forward lines last week, signing former Pittsburgh Penguins winger Petr Sykora to a one-year, $1.6 million contract. Sykora had originally been invited to the Wild camp on a tryout basis but was signed by the club within a matter of a few days. Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher has been trying to bring more depth to his scoring lines during the off-season, and had been rumored interested in Dany Heatley and Phil Kessel before the two were subsequently dealt to their respective new teams. In the 32-year-old Sykora they're getting a nine-time twenty-plus goal ...

The Dany Heatley trade saga is finally over. After months of speculation since news Heatley requested a trade from the Ottawa Senators broke in mid-June, including a failed early July deal with the Edmonton Oilers, the Senators dealt the disgruntled winger along with a fifth round pick to the San Jose Sharks. Heading to the Senators are forwards Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo plus a second round pick. The Sharks were long rumored as the potential destination for Heatley, having been listed among the eight teams on his "wish list" of preferred destinations, but were the only club seen as having any real interest in getting a deal done over the course of the summer. It took weeks however due in part to Heatley's large salary ($7.5 million per season) and the asking price ...

In the wake of the San Jose Sharks shipping defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich to the Vancouver Canucks on August 28th and the Canucks subsequent signing of unrestricted free agent defenseman Mathieu Schneider, it's expected those two teams are through making deals. By trading Ehrhoff and Lukowich to Vancouver, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson freed up over $4.6 million in salary cap space, giving him much-needed wiggle room under the $56.8 million cap in which to either sign more players within the sytem and either signing an unrestricted free agent or perhaps another player by trade. As for the Canucks, their recent acquisitions push them roughly $2 million over the cap for the upcoming season but GM Mike Gillis recently told the Vancouver Province not only ...

Rumored for weeks to be in the market for one or two defensemen,Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis found what he was looking for with the San Jose Sharks. On Friday Gillis acquired veteran blueliners Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich from the Sharks in exchange for defenseman Daniel Rahimi and forward Patrick White. The 27-year-old Ehrhoff, who had 42 points in 77 game with the Sharks last season should fill Gillis' need for another puck-moving defenseman. Lukowich, 33, is a physical defensive blueliner who has plenty of playoff experience having won Stanley Cups with Dallas and Tampa Bay. Sharks general manager Doug Wilson had been sitting just over the salary cap (at roughly $58.3 million) prior to making this move. In shipping out Ehrhoff and ...

After weeks of speculation over the contract status of San Jose Sharks winger Ryane Clowe various sources report the club has re-signed him to a multi-year deal. Clowe's new contract is for four years and $14 million, counting as $3.5 million per season. Heading into last week's NHL entry draft weekend there was talk negotiations between the two sides had stalled. GM Doug Wilson even entertained offers for Clowe, although it could've merely been a ploy on his part to force negotiations along. Whatever the reason Clowe's now under contract for four years and the 26-year-old winger could go on to become a valuable part of the Sharks offensive attack. Last season was Clowe's best to date, with 22 goals and 52 points in 71 games, which was also his healthiest thus ... |
