- The St. Louis Blues this past week signed former Dallas Stars defenseman Darryl Sydor to a one-year, $1 million contract. Sydor, 37, attended Blues training camp on a tryout basis and is seen as an affordable replacement for Jay McKee, whom the Blues bought out of his contract this summer. His considerable playoff experience (he played in five Stanley Cup finals, winning the Cup with Dallas and Tampa Bay) and leadership should make him a good addition to this young Blues team. - The New Jersey Devils brought in some much-needed veteran depth at center last week, signing former Anaheim Duck Rob Niedermayer to a one-year contract worth $1 million. After informing the Anaheim Ducks prior to last weekend’s NHL entry draft he was returning for another NHL season, Scott Niedermayer today set to rest any concerns it might not be with Anaheim. The Ducks today announced they’d re-signed their blueline stalwart to one-year, $6 million contact with bonuses. It had been suggested in some circles Niedermayer’s return to the Ducks wasn’t carved in stone, setting some Ducks fans to worry the club might’ve traded away Chris Pronger during the draft for nothing, but Ducks GM Bob Murray is not a stupid man and wouldn’t have made that move if he thought Niedermayer would come back to Anaheim.
