The Los Angeles Kings added veteran depth to the defense corps today, claiming blueliner Randy Jones off re-entry waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers. Jones' .75 million salary will be split between the Kings and Flyers. It's been suggested the Flyers did this move deliberately in order to get his salary off their books but according to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren that wasn't the case, saying no one had asked him to put Jones on re-entry waivers. Holmgren had hoped to add Jones to his roster now that forward Simon Gagne has gone on long-term injury reserve, thus freeing up the necessary cap space for Jones' salary. Until today Jones' entire NHL career had been spent with the Flyers. His best season was 2007-08, with 5 goals and 31 points in 71 games. He should prove a valuable ...

-The NHL career of former Dallas Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov is over. It was reported today Zubov, 39, signed with St. Petersburg of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League. The 16-year NHL veteran tried to find another NHL team to sign with this summer but his age and concern over his health (he missed most of last season to hip surgery) made most NHL teams leery of signing him. Zubov was one of the league's best offensive defensemen in his heyday, and played a key role in the NY Rangers and Dallas Stars Stanley Cup championships in 1994 and 1999 respectively. His best NHL season was 1993-94 when he led the Rangers in regular season scoring with 89 points. He finishes his NHL career with 771 points in 1068 regular season games, and 117 points in 164 playoff games. ...

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger didn't have to wait long to get a contract extension from his new team. Soon after reports appeared on July 6th claiming Pronger was hopeful of re-signing a long-term extension with the Flyers, it was reported he'd re-upped with the club to a seven-year, $35 million contract which would take effect at the beginning of the 2010-11 season. Pronger, 34, was acquired by the Flyers during the NHL Entry Draft weekend from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Joffrey Lupul, defenseman Luca Sbisa and two first round draft picks. While he's still considered among the league's elite defensemen and plays with a strong physical style that is bound to make him a fan favorite in Philadelphia, there are some concerns about this lengthy deal. It takes ...

The Philadelphia Flyers pride themselves on being a tough, gritty team to play against and on the first day of this summer’s NHL UFA frenzy they just got a little tougher. Former Colorado Avalanche pest Ian Laperierre inked a three-year, $3.5 million contract with the Flyers, which will be a cap hit of $1.17 million per season. Laperriere will be a good addition to the Flyers checking lines. He’s got good size (6-1, 200), doesn’t shy away from the rough stuff and is considered among the league’s biggest pests, the type of player who can draw penalties and drive opponents to distraction. Flyers fans will love him. ...

Former San Jose Sharks goaltender Brian Boucher is returning to the city where his NHL career began. The Philadelphia Flyers today signed Boucher to a two-year, $1.8 million contract worth $925K per season against the Flyers cap. With this signing and that last month of Ray Emery the Flyers have changed their entire goaltending tandem from last season as Martin Biron and Antero Niittymaki hit the UFA market. Boucher had two solid seasons with the Sharks as a backup netminder and will likely fit into the same role behind Emery next season. ... |
