The New York Rangers opted for a younger enforcer today, acquiring forward Jody Shelley from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a draft pick and placing veteran forward Donald Brashear on waivers.
Shelley, 34, has compiled over 1,300 PIMs during his eight season NHL career. He's returned from injury in early January which had sidelined him for 23 games.
The 38-year-old Brashear was signed by the Rangers in the off-season but he's seen limited playing time this year and wasn't delivering the type of rugged physical play expected of him.
Shelley is also eligible for UFA status this summer but he could be an affordable re-signing for the Blueshirts if he plays well the rest of the season.
As for Brashear, he'll likely clear waivers and be demoted to the minors for the remainder of the season to clear his $1.4 million cap hit from the Rangers books.
