In the wake of the San Jose Sharks shipping defensemen Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich to the Vancouver Canucks on August 28th and the Canucks subsequent signing of unrestricted free agent defenseman Mathieu Schneider, it's expected those two teams are through making deals.
By trading Ehrhoff and Lukowich to Vancouver, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson freed up over $4.6 million in salary cap space, giving him much-needed wiggle room under the $56.8 million cap in which to either sign more players within the sytem and either signing an unrestricted free agent or perhaps another player by trade.
As for the Canucks, their recent acquisitions push them roughly $2 million over the cap for the upcoming season but GM Mike Gillis recently told the Vancouver Province not only would his club be compliant with the cap by October 1st but he'd still have room to make other moves, perhaps including signing veteran center Mats Sundin.
One doesn't have to read much into Gillis' statement to realize in order to be cap compliant by the start of the upcoming season he'll have to dump salary, either via demotions or trades.
Plenty of wild speculation has arisen in recent days the Sharks and Canucks could be planning major moves. Some have suggested the Sharks are clearing the boards to either acquire Dany Heatley from Ottawa or perhaps sign Boston Bruins restricted free agent Phil Kessel.
Some Canucks fans have suggested the possibility of forward Pavol Demitra getting shipped to the NY Rangers to play alongside friend and former Minnesota Wild teammate Marian Gaborik.
Big moves are possible but most likely Wilson and Gillis will make less splashy deals to address their specific needs.
Keep an eye on these two teams in the coming weeks, as they're clearly not finished making moves.
