    Brett Favre Traded to Jets

Thursday, August 7, 2008, 07:00 AM EST [General]

Brett Favre will finallly get traded to the New York Jets, thus hopefully ending a long drawn out dispute. Earlier in the whole Brett Favre issue, the Packers mad ei tclear that they did not want to trade Brett Favre. However, as things got more developed, they really had to trade him.

In return, the Packers got an unconditional fourtrh round draft pick for 2009. This will become a third round draft pick if Favre plays in 50 percent of the plays this season, a second  round pick if he plays in 70 percent of the plays this season, and a first round pick if Favre plays in 80 percent of the plays and the Jest make it to the Super Bowl. However, I don't find it likely that the Jets will make it to the Super Bowl.

Some measurement were also put into the deal to ensure that Favre does not end up in MInnesota. If he is traded to Minnesota, the Jets would have to surrender three first round draft picks to the Packers. ouch.

At tihs point I'm just happy that this whole battle is coming to an end. At this point, I leave the room when Sportscenter starts talking about him bvecause I'm so sick of hearing abou thim. The whole episode is ruining his leagcy as one of the greatest QB's ever to play.

This does mak eme a bit uneasy, because he is now in the AFC East. BEing a Pats fan, that makes me a bit nervous, because the Jets may be more of a threat. However, I don't think  that they have enough to take down the Patriots when they play each other. They won't beat the Patriots, but they will have a better record this year than in previous seasons. We'll have to see how everythin plays out here and in Green Bay.

    What's With the Rays?

Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 07:14 PM EST [General]

The Rays have turned around this year and become one of the best teams in baseball for 2008. I can't figure out why they have improved so much in the last year, and being a boston fan, i'm starting to worry about how the AL East is shaping up.

Going back to 2001, the most wins the Rays had in a single year was 67. This year, the Rays have 68 wins with still nearly 2 months of baseball left. I'm having trouble figuring out how they've improved so much.

During the last few seasons, the Rays have been plagued by multiple injuries, which may have hurt their record. This year, they have had littl eproblems with injuries, and the team is playing well. I heard on some sports show that the Rays should have done better during the last few seasons but again the injuries limited the team. If Rocco Baldeli returns this year, and matches his previous numbers, the Rays have a great chance of winning the AL East.

The Rays haven't had any major aquisitions during the offseason. However, having the rookie Evan Longoria has helped the team, and he has the most home runs hit by a Rays rookie, wiht still two months of baseball to go. He is a great third baseman, and undoubtibly has helped the team.

I also heard somewhere that their schedule has been easy this year, helping the team. I have yet to look at the Rays schedule this year, so I don't know how good of a reason this is. Anyway, if this is the case, than that will also have an impact on how the team does this year. We'll just have to see how everything shapes up.

Who's the Best Second Baseman in Baseball?

Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 08:23 AM EST [General]

This is going to be a hard question to answer, as many great second basemen litter the majors. The best ones I'd have to say are Ian Kinsler, Dustin Pedroia, and Chase Utley.

Ian Kinsler leads the Majors in average, hitting .318 with the Texas Rangers. He is fourth in home runs among second basemen, with 14, and fourth in RBI's, with 62. He is clearly a good hitter for a second baseman, and is one of the best second baseman. However, he leads second baseman with 18 errors, and a .972 fielding percentage. Overall Ian Kinsler is a good hitter, but is slightly lacking in fielding.

Dustin Pedroia has only 5 errors and a .991 fielding percentage. He is second in average behind Ian Kinsler for second basemen, hitting .317. He is tied for ninth among second basemen for home runs, with nine on the year. He is eighth in RBI's, with 48. Overall, Pedroia is one of the best fielders in baseball, if not the best. His power numbers are not that amazing, but his .317 average is one to be proud of.

Chase Utley is having a great year offensively. His 28 homeruns and 77 RBI's both lead major league second basemen. His .292 average is pretty good, and he is one of the best power hittig second basemen, at least for this year. As a fielder, he has 10 errors in 109 games, leading to a .983 fielding percentage. Overall, he leads second basemen in home runs and RBI's, so he is a great hitter, and a decent fielder.

Overall, the best fielding second baseman in my opinion is Dustin Pedroia. The best hitting second basemen is Chase Utley. Picking an overall best second baseman will be difficult, but going to have to choose Dustin Pedroia. He is one of the best fielders in the game, and his .317 average shows that he is a good hitter, and he leads second basemen in multi hit games this year.

If you disagree or think someone else is better, leave a comment with your opinion.

Who will win the AL East?

Monday, August 4, 2008, 07:20 AM EST [General]

As of now, the AL East is a tight race between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox, with the New York Yankees following closely. Being a Red Sox fan, I think that the Sox will pull ahead as the season progresses. I ddon't think that the Rays will be able to stay in first until the end of September.

As with the Yankees, they don't have the pitching to get them to the postseason. They will fnish third behind the Red sox and the Rays. Now matter how well their offense does in the fnal two months of the year, their pitching troubles will probably keep them from the postseason.

The Sox have the offense and pitching to gain a lead in the AL East. The gaining of Jason Bay will also help the offense. Between Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, and Daisuke Matsuzaka, the pitching should be all set. The only issue is their middle relief, which could cause some issues for the team.

The Rays have decent pitching with Scott Kazmir, James Shields, and Andy Sonnanstine. This will make them a good challenge for the Sox during August and September. They have good hitting, and their defense is great. They have a good fielding percentage, which could prove to help them near the postseason.

Sox: will finish first in the Al East

Rays: will finish second in AL East, but make wildcard.

    Yankees: won't make playoffs

Overall, it will be a close race all the way to the end in the AL East, between the Sox and Rays. I think that the Sox will win, but it could go either way. And there is always the AL Wildcard, so you can't count anyone out just yet. I think its also safe to say that the AL East will produce the AL Wildcard.
