National Team: Serbia's Thin Euro Hopes to Play Out Today

Wednesday, November 21, 2007, 08:08 AM EST [General]

Serbia's hopes of reaching the Euro 2008 finals look grim as the "White Eagles" take on already qualified Poland at Red Star stadium in Belgrade today, with kick-off at 20:45 local time.

Serbia will need to beat Poland and hope that Finland pulls off an unlikely victory in its last game away to Portugal, which will take place at the same time. The Serbs would then need to defeat Kazakhstan at home in a rescheduled game next Saturday, forcing a three-way tie with Finland and Portugal from which the Balkan side would advance, thanks to its superior head-to-head record against the teams concerned. UEFA has already informed the Serbian FA that if the team loses all chances of qualification on Wednesday, the Kazakhstan match could be cancelled altogether. The game was initially abandoned last Saturday afternoon, due to heavy snow that covered Partizan stadium in Belgrade.

Despite the qualification predicament and a developing media frenzy, Serbian FA President Zvezdan Terzic offered an unprecedented public show of support to head coach Javier Clemente today, noting that the Spanish strategist was developing respect and authority with the players. Rest assured that whether or not Serbia qualify - which seems unlikely - this blog will provide a detailed analysis of both the recent qualification cycle and the potential future of the Serbian senior national team!

Odds and Ends: Management Changes at Red Star and on National Team

Tuesday, November 20, 2007, 06:17 PM EST [General]

Leading Serbian-language sports media are reporting two significant personnel changes in Serbian football today.

The first is an arrival at the country's biggest club, Red Star Belgrade, where the Management Board appointed Serbian businessman Toplica Spasojevic as the new Chairman of the club. Spasojevic is the President of the ITM Group, a Serbian importing and distribution company. He earned the 2006 award of Serbian Businessman of the Year, and has laid out an ambitious reform program for Red Star. His main goals, presented in a five-year management plan, include strengthening Red Star's recruitment network and football school. Spasojevic also announced the future introduction of a long-term plan that will lay out major goals for the development of the club through the year 2020. Judging from immediate online responses, most casual fans appear positive regarding the news. Spasojevic takes over the Chairmanship after Red Star and Yugoslav legend Dragan Stojkovic announced his withdrawal from the position earlier in the month, citing "tiredness" and personal considerations as reasons for his departure.

The second change is the imminent resignation of Serbian national team (senior and U-21) director, Zoran Mirkovic. A former Partizan Belgrade, Juventus FC and Yugoslav national team defender, Mirkovic also appears to have decided to depart for personal reasons. Belgrade media and Serbian FA officials have noted Mirkovic's popularity and solid work in the role, and the move thus comes as a relative surprise. Mirkovic appeared to be instrumental in calming Serbian national team captain Dejan Stankovic, after the Inter Milan midfielder considered retiring from international play following Serbia's 0:0 draw in Armenia last month. That result effectively ended Serbia's chances of qualification for Euro 2008.
