With so many picks in the first three rounds the Patriots have many options in a very deep, not necessarily the most stacked, but deep pool of talent in this years NFL draft. As mock draft after mock draft continues to change as to what Bill Belichick and the Pats will do, the first thing we have to note is that nobody knows what he's going to do. He does something unexpected every year and more often then not, it pays off whether it be via a trade or through a pick.
If I had to wager a guess however as to what direction the Pats go, I would look into their most glaring needs first. They need to improve the linebacker position, both inside and out, as well as their secondary, both corners and safeties. You could also say, on a next level, they need at least one offensive lineman and perhaps a tight end, which is always a safe bet in a Belichick draft. Their picks look like this:
#24 (Patriots 1st Round)
#34 (From Kansas City)
#47 (From San Diego)
#59 (Patriots 2nd Round)
And I see them addressing the fallowing needs with the fallowing picks:
#24: They need an outside linebacker who can step in right away and play opposite Adalius Thomas. There are plenty to choose from who could slip this late into the first round. Either of the two USC linebackers, Cushing or Matthews fit into this role as well as James Larinitus from Ohio State. There is also the off chance (very off chance) the Ray Maluga slips and falls into their laps, but that is not very likely.
#34: I see them using this pick on a defensive back. Despite the addition of Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs, neither Wilhite or Whealty proved to show much promise in terms of development, and with a lack of depth at the safety position, another talented defensive back would be a great addition. There are plenty of talented defenders who could have goon in the first round but were not needed. There is great depth in this years cornerback class, and there is not much need in the first round for a safety and a top caliber free/strong safety could fall into their laps with this pick.
#47: This is where things start to depend on the first two, but I think Belichick goes for a lineman here. The Pats are very thin on the o-line and getting old, so the addition of a versatile o-lineman would be a huge pick up here.
#59: Belichick loves his tight ends and I see him picking one here. Watson and Thomas are both talented but heavily injury laden, and Baker, their new addition, has struggled in the past as an offensive weapon. I see Belichick finding a diamond in the rough tight end with this late second round pick and prove to everyone why he loves his tight ends.
The main thing to remember is that Belichick loves to surprise us. Lets look back: Ty Warren at #12? Asante Samuel in the 4th round? Brady in the 6th? While he has made some questionable picks in the past, look no farther then Jerod Mayo to know that he knows how to work the draft to address the immediate needs of the team.
