    A-Roid? Who Cares!

Sunday, February 15, 2009, 02:27 PM EST [Alex Rodriguez]

The past two weeks have had many worthwhile sports topics go un-discussed because of Alex Rodriguez being accused of using steroids when he played for the Rangers from 2001-2003. Let me be the first to say, "who cares." Alex Rodriguez was know to have used steroids since the first private report came out almost five years ago and it only surfaced two weeks ago? Something is up here. There are 103 other players on the same list as A-Rod and the list was supposed to be kept private by the players union. With that in mind, there is no way that he can be punished fairly by the comish and there is no way that this should continue the way it has.
Bud Selig was open about the possibility of suspending Rodriguez for his steroid use but that would only open the floodgates. If he punishes A-Rod, he will be forced then to announce the 103 other names and do the same punishment for them. Sure, I would bet that most of the players on that list are second tier players or even bench players whose punishments would be meaningless because half of them are out of baseball, but there are most definitely some big stars on that list who cause less controversy then Rodriguez who would do anything to keep that list private. He is a victim of circumstance. Sure he used steroids but in the wake of all this he has been very honest and open about his use. Taking the Andy Pettite route is the cleanest way to go about doing it, as appose to the Bonds and Clemens ways that would have just dragged his reputation through the mud.
Should we take away his accomplishments? No. Should he be punished? No. Should we even care anymore? NO! Because we know baseball players use steroids, we know that more will come forward and we know most importantly that the list he was on was supposed to remain private with no repercussions of being placed on it. And lets be honest here, can you blame him? He signed the largest contract in baseball history; I would feel a little bit of pressure to perform wouldn't you? While that does not justify it, I commend his honesty throughout the ordeal and predict more players to come forward in the coming weeks and months.
