Well, well, well. Here we are again. It's week 9 and all hell is breaking loose in college football. First I would like to welcome back all the readers and hope you enjoy this week's picks.
Once again, the BCS is causing controversy just like every year since it has been inducted. My main suggestion about the BCS standings would be to remain calm, hope your team wins, and just know that everything will usually turn out the way it should.
Now its time to choose my bonus picks. Surprisingly there are no SEC games this week in my bonus picks. Yeah, I know Georgia and Florida are playing and it will be a good game. Other than that nothing really exciting in the SEC. The real surprise for me though was I have an ACC and two Pac 10 matchups that I am going with as my exciting bonus picks.
#2 Boston College @ #8 Virginia Tech
#2 Boston College, I have to admit, really snuck up on me. It made me curious as to how they flew under my all knowing radar (jk) so I did some digging. This is what I found. BC's hardest competition so far this year was Wake Forest. Which came at the beginning of the year. Their second hardest test was Georgia Tech. GT is not a bad team but not a good team either. As I look at BC's schedule I see a good team here but not a great team. If Boston College wins against Virginia Tech and end up running the table I see them still finishing the season in second or third based on their SOS.
#8 Virginia Tech, also snuck up on me. Maybe I need to pay some extra attention to the ACC. Then again with Florida State and Miami having the poor teams they have been having lately I bet most people weren't watching the ACC. After checking up on VT I see that they have the same exact schedule as BC. With one HUGE exception. VT took on LSU and lost in a big way. I really thought this was going to be an easy choice between these two teams but now I am not so sure. Once again if VT can beat BC and win out there is no reason they shouldn't be ranked somewhere around #3.
This is a really tough choice but I am going to have to give the nod to Virginia Tech, due to home field advantage.
#2 Boston College 27 - #8 Virginia Tech 28 Actual Score : #2 BC 14 - #8 VT - 10
Well, I had this one pegged pretty good with it being close. One exception though was BC decideded to start playing with 4:11 left in the game and took this win away from VT.
#9 USC @ #5 Oregon
#9 USC, do you guys have all your starters back for this game? If not it is going to be a long day on the field for you guys. One thing I can't believe is USC went from #14 to #9 for beating Notre Dame. Wierd. USC has to be one of the most talented yet under-achieving team in CFB today. Yeah, I am still on you guys for losing to Stanford but more than that you just have to many injuries for me to feel good about your team. USC barely beat Nebraska, squeeked by Washington, lost to Stanford, and another close one against Arizona. Your fans should be scared right now but instead they are beating there chests. "Look at us we beat NOTRE DAME!!!" Sorry USC your luck runs out this weekend. Before anyone thinks I hate USC, I don't. I don't hate any teams out there. Facts are facts. You have a shitload of injuries on your team. Also your schedule doesn't get any easier after Oregon. Look for 1 to 2 more losses.
#5 Oregon, one of the best teams in CFB today. They have outstanding wins and keep dominating their opponents with one exception, California. The bad thing about Oregon is that the teams they have beaten aren't exactly stellar. The biggest win they have is Michigan, who at the beginning of the season just isn't the same team as they are now. One huge difference between Oregon and USC is that Oregon has beaten the teams they were supposed to beat. Not only did they beat them, they sent them home crying to their mommas. The only thing that worries me and makes this a tougher descision than it should be is Oregon allows a lot of points to be scored against them.
Another game that I thought would be an easy choice but it isn't so cut and dry between these two teams. I choose Oregon to win in a shootout due to playing at home and USC starters having injuries.
#9 USC 37 - #5 Oregon 41 Actual Score : #9 USC 17 - #5 Oregon 24
Saw this one coming. Oregon is that good and USC just isn't that good. Short and sweet.
#18 California @ #7 Arizona State
#18 California, was looking really strong at the beginning of the season but with two straight losses is starting to look quite mediocre. You have to wonder how much these losses are going to mess with the Cal players heads. Personally, I think Cal wants to find redemption in beating an undefeated opponent. California is starting to play a lot like UCLA, as in you never know who is going to show up. This game will boil down to how bad they want it.
#7 Arizona State, has quietly moved into the #7 position in the BCS rankings. This is as high as they go. AZ State you had a nice run but it comes to an end this weekend. Actually it comes to an end this weekend, next weekend and the weekend after that. After AZ State loses this game look for them to lose two more for a total of a three game losing skid. Sorry, guys.
This one is a bit easier of a pick than the first two games. California wins this one nicely.
#18 California 48 - #7 Arizona State 29 Actual Score : #18 California 20 - ASU - 31
I was expecting Cal to do a lot better bur ASU had other plans. Great game for ASU. They showed the natian that they are for real.
Well, with the bonus picks out of the way. I now turn my attention to the Big Ten games. Just wanted to say congratulations to Ohio State for staying on top at #1. I would also like to say nice job to Michigan for moving up to #19. Finally, I would like to welcome Penn State into the top 25. They are now ranked #24. Before anyone jumps the gun, yes there is a discrepancy in the rankings between the BCS and what FOX puts beside the teams. I assure you that if you go to the top 25 scores page, the numbers match up and thats what I used.
Ball State @ Illinois
Ball St., you guys have some nice wins under your belt. You almost beat Nebraska which would have been pretty wild. You guys don't have much of a chance at Illinois.
Illinois, tough loss last week at home. Don't worry you will bounce back with an easy win over Ball State. Its not going to be that easy of a win but it will be easy. If it wasn't for the dropped punt you guys probably would have taken down Michigan.
Easy choice here is Illinois at home over Ball State.
Ball State 13 - Illinois 38 Actual Score : Ball St. 17 - Illinois 28
Nice win for Illinois over a good Ball St. team.
Indiana @ Wisconsin
Indiana, with a big loss to Michigan State and a close loss to Penn State. Is this the downward spiral everyone was expecting? Hopefully it isn't but things just don't look good for Indiana. The biggest disadvantage for Indiana this weekend will be that they are playing Wisconsin at home. Indiana has proven they can win away games but has also proven they can lose at them.
Wisconsin, after two straight losses picked up a nice easy win over Northern Illinois. Is this where they pick up the pieces and put everything back together? The Badgers are tough as nails when it comes to playing on their home turf. The win over Northern Illinois came at the perfect time and they will be ready for Indiana.
Going with a gut feeling here and also the home team.
Indiana 18 - Wisconsin 35 Actual Score : Indiana 3 - Wisconsin 33
Huge win for Wisconsin. Indiana welcome to homecoming weekend. I never liked playing against teams on homecoming. They seemed to be so much more focused on winning.
Michigan State @ Iowa
Michigan State, was completely shut down last week. Their #1 Big Ten offense could only put 3 points on the board. The game was only close because the defense brought some really good pressure to Ohio State's offense. If it wasn't for Michigan State's defense this game would have been a blowout. Fear not Michigan State fans your offense will not get shutdown this weekend. The Spartan offense after being bottled up last week is like a shaken bottle of coke with a Mentos dropped in it. It will explode all over Iowa.
Iowa, it has been pretty much bad news for you guys all year. Wait, I do have good news though. No, its not a lame Geico commercial. This game here will be your last loss of the season. Well, maybe. I will put it this way. It SHOULD be your last loss of the season. Okay, Okay, your second to last loss of the season.
If Michigan State plays to their potential, this game is a no brainer.
Michigan State 44 - Iowa 14 Actual Score : Michigan St. 27 - Iowa 34
It seems with Michigan St. and Iowa you just never know what your going to get.
Northwestern @ Purdue
Northwestern, has been quite a surprise team this year. Beating teams it shouldn't but then turning around and losing to teams it shouldn't. Northwestern's up and down schedule is a perfect representation of the CFB season so far. Will they be a spoiler team for Purdue? Nope.
Purdue, had one of the best offenses in the Big Ten. Then it ran head on into Ohio State and Michigan. To have both those teams on your schedule is hard enough. Then to lose them in poor fashion is even worse. It was nice to see that Pudue took those two losses put it behind them and went right back to work beating Iowa with ease. That takes a lot of character to not get down on yourself and comeback with a win. Purdue will put up good numbers on Northwestern.
It won't be a close game but then again it won't be a blowout either. Purdue.
Northwestern 23 - Purdue 39 Actual Score : Northwestern 17 - Purdue 35
With this pick I don't think I could get much closer without picking the exact score.
Minnesota @ #19 Michigan
Minnesota, good Lord. I am at a loss for words. No offense, no defense, lost to a Div. II school. I think I am just going to stop right there. I really like Kalbrecht 17 and he doesn't need to be punished more by what I would like to say about Minnesota. His team losing all these games is punishment enough.
#19 Michigan, many people wrote this team off after they lost to App. St. and were destroyed by Oregon. Me, I was just wondering what the hell was going on up there in Michigan. Today, there is no wondering what is going on. Michigan has won all of its games since then. Many of those wins were ugly but a win is a win. This one is going to be ugly also. Not for Michigan though. They might even sit Mike Hart out for this game too. I would at least get him dressed just in case lightning strikes twice.
Michigan blows the doors off Minnesota in this one.
Minnesota 10 - #19 Michigan 55 Actual Score : Minnesota 10 - #19 Michigan 34
Just another game with a foregone conclusion. Although when Minnesota was up 10 to nothing I was a bit surprised.
#1 Ohio State @ #24 Penn State
#1 Ohio State, had a bit of a scare against Michigan State. Was it enough of a scare for them to really focus on Penn State? I think so. Everyone talks about Ohio State as being worthless and the big bully that beats up on smaller schools. The players are reminded everyday of the 41-14 loss in the NC game last year. This team is so focused on each individual team that its not possible for them to get ahead of themselves. One thing this year's team has that last year's team didn't have is humility. They know they're not that good. So they look to improve each week. The defense said that they were pissed that they gave up 3 points last week. Its that kind of mentality that will see them through this game at Penn State.
#24 Penn State, looks like an exact copy of Ohio State. A strong solid defense but with an offense that is unsure of itself sometimes. Penn State is really looking forward to this game. They know at home they are one of the strongest and toughest opponents in the country. One other thing on their side is the whole world will be hoping and cheering for them to beat Ohio State. Will it be enough? This year they are 100% in wins at home.
The chances of Ohio State winning at Penn State don't look good. But then again Penn State's chances of winning against Ohio State don't look good either. I have to go with Ohio State in a nailbiter.
#1 Ohio State 34 - #24 Penn State 33 Actual Score #1 Ohio State 37 - #24 Penn State 17
Hmm, maybe my scores here weren't so far off after all.
Most people are going to say I am just an Ohio State homer but I do try to be as objective as possible. I do love Ohio State but I always wish every Big Ten school does good. This in turn makes us all look good. Well, I now turn this over to the readers and their comments. I enjoy and respond to most comments left.
Sorry this week's wrapups were so short. I had a family emergency that kept me away from th computer. Now I am off to to next weeks predictions. By the way my record is now 21 - 10. Woot, go BIG TEN!
