Week 7 is upon us. Amazing how the season is already half over. Last week I did an awesome write up but the FOXSports page gave me a major letdown. So I am trying this on notepad first to see how this goes. Wish me luck. I was 6-0 last week let's make it a two-fer. This brings my total to an amazing 42-9.
Iowa @ Indiana
Iowa last week played their guts out once again in a close loss. This week they get an opponent that has been reeling the last 3 weeks. Iowa hasn't looked bad in their losses but they haven't exactly looked good either. I say put it on the coaches not the players. They are only doing what they are told. They execute the plays that are sent in no matter how dumb they are. Maybe sometime they should try calling their own shots. Nah, that would never happen.
Notable Quote: "You can't be sitting in the red zone with two opportunities to score and turn the ball over twice. Turnovers are definitely the thing. We've had a lot the last two weeks, and a lot of those go to me, which isn't good."-- QB Ricky Stanzi, on his five turnovers in two Big Ten starts. Hmm, maybe they should start someone else smart guy.
Indiana this is probably your best chance to win for the rest of the season except for maybe CMU. The defense is rated way below Iowa's but the offense is rated way above. This makes this call really difficult this week but I don't feel this team has the heart of last year's team. Once again Indiana will keep this one close but will inevitably fall short even though they are at home.
Notable Quote: "It was a tough loss. I thought our defense played hard, and they really played well against a good offensive team and gave us a chance. Unfortunately, we didn't do enough on the offensive side to give us the points that we needed."-- Head coach Bill Lynch why his team struggled vs. Minnesota. Really? 7 points isn't enough offensively?
Iowa 14 Indiana 10 Actual Score : Iowa 45 Indiana 9
Wow!!! Iowa decided to show up and put a massive beatdown on Indiana. Where in the hell has this Iowa team been? Does this change things for both teams? Probably not. I am actually kind of speechless about this pummeling. I seriously want to know what was different this week for Iowa than the last couple weeks?
Minnesota @ Illinois
Minnesota I give you guys no chance. Well, ok I shouldn't say no chance but a very slim one. Hey, we all know anything can happen on Saturday. Unfortunatly this isn't one of those Saturdays. Just remember though all you have to do is win one more for a shot at a bowl game. Wow, your schedule really doesn't favor that scenario either.
Notable Quote: "This is what we came here to do, what I came here to do. To play defense. This feels great." -- LB Lee Campbell, to the Star Tribune. That's great buddy. You are a linebacker you know? On defense.
Illinois looked a bit rusty to start against Michigan but once again was firing on all cylinders by the end of the game. Just based on the offensive side of the ball these guys should have little to no problems scoring against Minnesota. Michigan really made these guys look amazing in the last game. The Illinois offense will get it going early in this one. One thing that worries me is the Illinois defense just isn't that good. Illinois will win this one but not before allowing a lot of scores.
Notable Quote: "It's a great feeling. Anytime you beat a top program with a lot of tradition like Michigan, it's a great feeling. It's something that you'll never forget. We were able to bounce back after last week's loss up at Penn State. It was a loss that gave you a gut-sick feeling -- and we hated it." -- QB Juice Williams in the Daily Herald. Yep, nothing better than beating a traditional powerhouse in a DOWN year moron. Also Penn State is over from Illinois not up.
Minnesota 21 Illinois 42 Actual Score : Minnesota 27 Illinois 20
Minnesota just keeps surprising everyone. After the beating they took against OSU I really thought they would curl up into the fetal position for the rest of the year. This Minnesota team is much different than last year's and this win puts them on the radar. Illinois still hasn't quite become that top tier team that they want to be. Welcome back to the middle of the Big Ten. Congratulations Minnesota you are now bowl eligible.
Toledo @ Michigan
Michigan we keep going back and forth. Your good, your bad, your good, your really bad.
What's the deal are you good or bad? Well, at least you have Toledo heading your way.
Nothing like having a cupcake to munch on in the middle of the season. This will be like a nice practice. You will get to do whatever you want all day long. Unless Toledo decides to pull an Appy State on your ass.
Notable Quote: "Let's face it, we're going to be grinding for the rest of the year. That's where we're at right now. If I'm speaking to you three, four years from now and saying every game's a grind, then you'll see we didn't build the program the right way. But right now? This year? We may have to grind." -- first-year Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez. What the hell does that even mean? Grind? Like grinding for xp in an MMO?
Toledo has been way down this year. These guys were actually predicted to be one of the top teams in the MAC. This season is a total bust. Toledo has always been a decent school but lately has just been a joke. Well, jokes on you this week. Your going to Michigan.
Notable Quote: "We didn't rush the ball the way we wanted to. Part of our plan was to be able to run the ball to set up the rest of our offense and we didn't get that executed. I give them credit for playing very good defense, but our execution wasn't where it needed to be."-- UT coach Tom Amstutz on the Rockets netting just 14 yards rushing compared to 240 for the Cardinals. Boy, you got a knack for stating the obvious.
Toledo 10 Michigan 27 Actual Score: Toledo 13 Michigan 10
Michigan is officially on my shit list and every other craptastic list out there. I understand you have a new head coach and a new system but damn it's fucking Toledo. You know the little city just south of Michigan that you and Ohio almost went to war over? The one thing Rich did wrong was trying to implement his system all at once. I said it before he should have implemented about half of it and kept half of the old system that way they have something to fall back on when they need it. Instead he just chucked everything out the window and said fuck Michigan's tradition of always being good. I think all of Michigan is saying "There is always next year." It's a sad day in football when a Big Ten power gets beat by a MAC team. You can have a down season and not lose to teams like that. I need to stop now before I blow a blodd vessel.
Michigan State @ Northwestern
Michigan State has played really well. Alot of people are still looking at their loss to Cal saying they aren't that good. Hey, it was the first game of the season. Wrinkles get ironed out and that is what Michigan State has done. This week is another big test. They are at Northwestern who is believing in themselves. All Michigan State has to do is keep it close.
Eventually Ringer will bring them home. If Ringer doesn't get going in this one though, its over. This one will be close until Ringer breaks a big one early in the fourth quarter. Then Michigan State's defense comes in and finishes things up.
Notable Quote: "I just know that there is something special about this football team.
We've been able to reach each other a little bit and play through some difficult times."-- MSU coach Mark Dantonio. Yeah, special. Special ED.
Northwestern has had a stellar season so far. This week it comes to an end. Fear not though you have Purdue and Indiana coming up after this one. This team really has been a surprise team so far this year and I still don't know a lot about them. What I do know is that they aren't as good as their record shows. Win this week and make me a believer Northwestern.
Notable Quote: "He earned this honor because of a great week of practice, solid focus and taking what the defense gave him." -- coach Pat Fitzgerald discussing QB C.J. Bacher's Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award. Really? There was no other offensive person who didn't play better than this guy? I call BS on this one. Oh, well throw them a bone they are 5-0.
Michigan State 30 Northwestern 24 Actual Score : Michigan State 37 Northwestern 20
Sort of a blow out but not really. A really good game to watch and both teams looked decent. Obviously MSU looked better becasue they won. At first I thought Northwestern was in serious truble when it was down by 17 after the first quarter but they tried to get back in the game. Northwestern never stopped playing but MSU was just too much for them.
Purdue @ Ohio State
Purdue has gone ugly. The 2 wins they have are against less than admirable opponents.
This team is probably one of the biggest disappointments in the Big Ten. Toss in the fact that now they don't even know who they want in at QB. These guys are in disarray and now they have to play Ohio State in the 'Shoe. This one could get ugly unless Tressel keeps usig his playbook from the 60's.
Notable Quote: "It was a horrible throw, a horrible decision. There's no way to sugarcoat it. It was really, really ugly." -- Purdue coach Joe Tiller, on the interception that finally got Curtis Painter benched. You mean you wern't going to bench him until that happened? Pure genius.
Ohio State is back on track. Sort of. Well, the players are but the coaches aren't. This team is winning just based on it's talent level. Put them up against another opponent with the same amount of talent and they will lose. They will lose because the coaches lack vision and really don't seem to know how to use the talent they have. It's frustrating to see so much talent being used so inefficiently. Ohio State will continue to win based on talent but will eventually lose when facing an opponent with a superior game plan. Ala USC. Who had the talent and the gameplanning to waste OSU. The Buckeye offense has all the pieces to put up monster numbers but still only puts up enough to win. This is strictly a playcalling thing. When OSU gets the playcalling to match the talent the rest of the country better watch out. As of right now OSU really is only a paper tiger.
Notable Quote: "I told him this is a man's game, and he's taking a step into manhood,"
Beanie Wells, on freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Damn, I really want to make fun of this quote but I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Now I look like a homer. Maybe someone else can come up with something.
Purdue 20 Ohio State 28 Actual Score : Purdue 3 Ohio State 16
I will just say for Purdue it looks to be a down year. Your coach is leaving and it's always tough to be competitive when that is looming. As for OSU I feel like we lost that game. After watching it I had the biggest headache ever. No offensive touchdown and the same grabastic offensive playcalling is getting OSU no where. I was really surprised to see OSU even moved up in the polls. They should have dropped at least 2 spots. The era of winning with defense only in bowl games is over and we are getting setup to be slaughtered in one. I know OSU was never in danger of losing this game but damn 3 field goals only? WTF. You have the talent but not the playcalling. I think I just gave myself another headache just revisiting this game.
Penn State @ Wisconsin
Penn State with no doubt is the cream of the crop in the Big Ten as of right now. This game at Camp Randall will be a huge test just like it was for the Buckeyes. There is no reason to pick against Penn State but sometimes you just get that feeling. The one that says "Yep, this is the game they lose." Penn State has gone through their schedule and just dominated opponent after opponent. I think right now though the focus of the team is on the health of Joe Pa. They just won't be ready.
Notable Quote: "I've taken more pills in the past two months than I've taken in my life."--- Penn State coach Joe Paterno, who watched the Purdue game from the coaches' box to rest his injured right leg, which he takes pain medication for. I would never make fun of someone who is down on their luck when it comes to health. Good luck with being healthy Joe Pa and I hope your team wins this weekend.
Wisconsin has lost 2 close ones in a row. They just couldn't close the deal. With Penn State heading in they will refocus on knocking off the big dog and get it done this weekend.
The combination of losing 2 close ones, Joe Pa's health and an angry group of people at Camp Randall makes this one a win for the Badgers. Another reason they will win this one is so everyone can say the Big Ten is weak. Which just isn't true. If Wisconsin plays mistake free and keeps the crowd in this game it's all over for the Nittany Lions.
Notable Quote: "I just dropped back and didn't want to take a sack, so I was trying to check it down and just didn't see (Ohio State CB Malcolm) Jenkins. That's my job, and I have to see him, and they came and made a great pick. It's just frustrating." -- Wisconsin QB Allan Evridge describing his last-minute interception that sealed Ohio State's 20-17 win. Wow, you didn't see a 6'1" 201 lb. black guy right in front of the reciever you were trying to throw to?
Penn State 21 Wisconsin 23 Actual Score : Penn State 48 Wisconsin 7
Well, Wisconsin's chances of doing pretty much anything are over. Maybe you will make it to a minor bowl game but that is about it. All your left playing for this year is pride. As for Penn State, holy shit. You guys are way above everyone else in the Big Ten. Don't lose your focus and you will be in the NCG. You guys are in the driver seat. There really isn't a team left on the schedule that matches up well. After what I saw on Saturday night I can't say enough good things about this team. One word of advice. If you go to the NCG win the damn thing please.
Well, in closing I just want to say thanks to the guy that was giving away a 42" Plasma Screen T.V. He gave it away on Craigslist because it would only turn on every four tries.
I replaced the batteries in the remote. It turns on evertime now. Hooray for me! Also I hope everyone knows I am just teasing people with my comments about the notable quotes. I figured injecting some humor into the blog would be fun.
Not much of a wrap up so I will just say I am 45-12. So all the haters can suck it.
