    Who Needs An Edge?

Tuesday, January 24, 2006, 12:42 PM EST [Edgerrin James]

This off season the Colts will face a major decision. Peyton Manning's not going to take a salary deduction to save this team so who to let go? Wayne or James? Many believe the Organization will keep Wayne around, maybe putting the franchise tag on him, and let James go to another team. This will certainly keep Peyton happy who will still have his core of great receivers in tact. Who needs a running back anyway? Or a kicker for that matter... SO here's assuming Edgerrin James isn't resigned by the Colts, who's going to try to get this guy? Lot's of teams will take a shot but only a few will get into a bidding war over it. New York Jets Let's face it Curtis Martin's not getting any younger. Maybe his tanks not entirely empty but it's definitely below half full. The Jets need an excellent ground game to make up for their lack of a passing game. "But they have a passing game when Pennington isn't hurt!" you scream. My reply: "When's that?" Look for the J-E-T-S to take a serious shot at signing him or maybe even a sign and trade with the Colts or another team (for Ty Law). Baltimore Ravens Looks like Jamal Lewis' days in Purple are over. He'll get signed by some other team and be playing in some other town next season. Maybe since he's not playing to not get hurt he'll do well. Provided the team he goes to has a quarterback capable of completing a pass or two. With his departure they'll need someone to fill the void. And what a pick up for the offense if they get The Edge. Detroit Lions The Lions are always looking for players in one of three positions: Quaterback, Wide Receiver, and Running Back. Even though they're not terribly weak at this position that won't stop them from going hard after James. Millen's always looking for that one breakout player who will turn the whole franchise around. Minnesota Vikings The Vikes are also looking for a breakout player. They once had Randy Moss but got rid of him in favor of a less tumultuous atmosphere. Worked great! But they don't have a solid running game and they need someone to take pressure off of Culpepper (or whoever plays QB there next season). Those are the four teams who I see being in the fight for James at the end. I don't have the Texans (for instance) up here cause I think they'll take a running back. If they do take Vince Young look for them to trade David Carr for another first round pick and maybe a player. Then they may be gunning for James if they don't take a Running Back in the draft. Plenty of other teams will be in the hunt but as time goes on I think it'll come down to these three teams. Of course, this is all assuming the Colts don't slap the franchise tag on The Edge and let Wayne go. Any other teams you think will still be running at the end of the James Race?
