Edinson Volquez had a fine debut season with the Cincinnati Reds.
Volquez, who was acquired by the Reds in exchange for star outfielder
Josh Hamilton last winter, went 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA and 206-to-93 K/W
ratio, emerging as one of the majors' finest starters under the age of
25. He even made Cincy fans forget about Hamilton, who put on a
legendary show at the Home Run Derby and led the American League with
130 RBIs.
For his efforts, Volquez finished fourth in the
National League Rookie of the Year voting. After pitching more than 50
innings with the Rangers over the past three years, however, he was not
technically a rookie in 2008, per league rules. Which means that three
members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America incorrectly
casted a ballot with his name on it, though he was not actually
eligible for the award.
How did the BBWAA not catch the error?
Seriously? At least it did not affect the outcome, as Chicago Cubs
catcher Geovany Soto won the award in a landslide.
