It's   said  that ikf  you're the   bigger  man     out  of  deferrence   you'll  show    respect  to   your   foe.   At  this   juncture   I'd   like  to   think  that   former   teammates     Kobe   Bryant   and   Shaquille   O'Neal     have  actually    buried   the    hatchet   once   and  for  all.

Suffice to  say   that  with    O'Neal's    Phoenix   Suns being   unceremoniously        dumped  out    of the NBA   playoffs.  And  the  Bryant    led     Lakers  having   reached  the   summit  of  where     O'Neal   himself   once   believed that  he'd  be   standing   once    again.    I   suspect  that  there   now  might   be     a   certain   degree  of  jealousy   on  his  part. Never   mind  the   fact  that   should   Bryant    lead   the  Lakers    to    a    win   over     the  Boston  Celtics  .   It  would   be   his   fourth    ring   as   a  triumphant   Laker.    Whereas     Shaq   went   elsewhere       in  order   to  garner   his    fourth   ring.  

In   happier  times    we  were   like  a  loving     couple   who  meant   so    much    to  one  another.   Then  I  found   out  that  he   didn't  like  me   as   much   I   liked    him  .    Who   do  you  think   might've  said  those   prophetic  words  ?   picture courtesy    of  images.google.com/sports/nba /los angeles  lakers.....

Oh as  to   what    might've  been   had  these   two   superstars   not  been   so  petulant . And  the   Lakers'    hierarchy     actually   shown    some    backbone  and   sat  the   two   superstars    down   and   tell  them   how  it  was   going  to   be. But  then   again    Mitch   Kupchak    is  much    like   a   church    mouse   somewhat   scared  of  his     own   shadow   and    reflection.   And   in  dealing   with    the    temperaments  of  not   only  Bryant   ,  O'Neal ,    the  coach   Phil   Jackson.     One   also    has to  remember that   there's   also   the     principal       owner   Dr  Jerry  Buss.    A  man    whose   ego    it  is   said   may  well  be     wider   than  that  of    the   Grand  Canyon.

Lakers'   fans    being  what  they   are     enthused    ,  enlightened    it  can   be   said  are    no    doubt  having    their   way    with  all  of  the  NBA  world as  to  their     supremacy  as  they    sit   atop   of  the    Western  Conference   as the    newly   crowned   champions.   I'd    dare  say    that many  of  the  Hollywood  A  listers   that've been   known   to  frequent   the    home   games   are making    sure  that  they'll   be  ready    to      show  us  all   what  it's     like  to   be  a    fan   of  the storied   franchise.    The   likes  of  Denzel,  Jack,   Dyan  and  Tobe   will    no    doubt   be  front   and   center   cheering   on  their   beloved   team.   And  I'd  dare  say    that    Jack  Nicholson    himself   will  be  orchestrating   much   of  the   fan   appreciation  of  the  team.

So  let  us  without    further ado    get    to  the  real   reasons   as   to  what      Shaq   will   or     won't  be doing    once    the  NBA   Finals   have   started. 

10)  With   his  private   life   being  in  such   a     turmoil   he  won't  be   asking   his   estranged   wife   Shaunie   if  she's   interested  in   attending the    finals.

9)   There's    no  chance  in  hell     that  he  and    Pat   Riley   will  be  sharing  a   cursory   limousine  ride    in    downtown   Los  Angeles   once    the   series   begins.

8)   The    possibility  of  him  seeking    a  reconciliation    with   Shaunie  is definitely    out of the    question   now  that  he's  found   out    that   she's    bilked     over   $  30m   from     their   bank  accounts     of  what's alleged  is  part  of his  $200-$300m   fortune

7)    He   won't   be   speaking  to   Mike  D'Antoni  as   to  what  his     role   was  actually  meant   to   be    after    D'Antoni's   abrupt    departure    from   the  Phoenix  Suns.

6)  He can    now   stop   calling   himself   "  The  Diesel"   as  this'd   now    add   insult to   injury    considering   the     price   of    gas    being  what it  is   now.

5)   Thinking   that  he   actually   stood   a  chance  of   baggin' and  taggin'    Mariah  Carey    now  that     a     much    younger  and  lesser      known   individual    by  the  name   of Nick  Cannon   has  beaten    him   to  it.

4)  Terrorizing    Jeanie  Buss     and   pleading   with  her   to see    if  the   Lakers   are    interested   in  having    him   back. 

3)  Same   as    #4    but  insert  the name   of   Dr Jerry  Buss  and  the    fact   he   possesses     pictures    of    Buss  in    several  lascivious    poses   with     some   underage    females.     To   which  Buss'll   retort   at   least     "  I'm  still  gettin'  some  and    you're   not  so  what  the   hell  do  I  care  "

2)   The  fact that    his    former    coach Phil   Jackson    will    no   longer    return    his   calls.   As    to  the  reasons  why     those  are   plentiful.  But the  one   that   no   doubt     comes  to  mind   was  his   criticism  of     Jackson  and   his   coaching  philosophy.

1)  He   can't  seem   to      wrap   himself   around the  situation   that    Kobe  Bryant   has  actually  made   it   to  an  NBA  Final    without   him .  And  at  the   same  time   he's    now   asking    what the  hell is  a   Pau  Gasol  ?

And  whilst    there   may    well  be      numerous   other     reasons  as  to  why      Shaq    won't  be  in    awe  of  his     former   teammate    and  their     new   found   success.  I'd    like  to   think  that   much  of the  animosity  that   may  well  rear   its   ugly    head   will    subside    once   the   series   begins.     But then  again   who    knows   when  it comes    to   the   bloviated    supersized   ego   of   an   NBA  superstar  ?    

If  you've   got   any     suggestions   as   to  why   you   believe    that  O'Neal    won't  be     enamored    with   the   Lakers'   current     state  of  affairs   and  success.  I'd   definitely   like   to   read  your  comments.   I'll  be   looking    forward to  it    and   of that    you  can  be  assured  !  Chimin'    out.

The  Beijing  Olympics are a   little  more  than   two   months  away.  And   despite  the    conflicts  and    political   unrest  we  can  only   hope  that    this    piece   of   commercial   extravaganza  lives    up  to    all   the  hype   that  has  been   promised.

On  Saturday   night  for those  of  you    who   weren't   aware.   The    100m    world   record     for   men  was  broken   by  a     21 year  old   Jamaican   by the  name  of   Usain  Bolt.    His  last    name    conjuring    up   no   doubt   exactly     what may  well  have   taken    place    on  the  track.  This  was   the   first      sprint   track    world   record    on   American  soil    since  the  Los  Angeles   Olympics.  Bolt    with    his    devastating    burst    of  speed    demolished   a    world   class    field    of   the    event's   top    stars.      And    though     it  can   be  said  that    his   inexperience   wasn't lacking.        It  doesn't  exactly      pose  a  sombering   thought   for    his opponents    with   the  Olympics     just   a    short    few   weeks   away.

And  inasmuch   as     one   would  like  to  believe  that   the  US has   that   superiority  in   the   world    when   it  comes    to   track  and    field  when   it  comes  to  the  sprint  events.    It  appears  to be     no     longer  the  case.

The   world    class  facilities   are    here    without  a  doubt    but   the   athletes   are      no    longer  what   one   would   hope that   they'd  be.    If  anything  other  than   the  Olympics  itself     and    to a    lesser   extent  the   World   Championships.   Track  and    field   no    longer     holds   that   lore   or   grabs     the  attention   of  the  public  here    in    North  America.      But  there'll   be   an   unabashed      coverage   of  the   events    in   Beijing    , China   with   almost  every   story   being  an   emotive    one   when  it    comes    to the  athletes   there   from   the   United  States.

And  whilst    I  wouldn't  be  the  first    to  decry   what's   wrong   with  the  state  of track  and    field  athletics.  I    must   admit  that  I'm   not totally  surprised   that  it's   not  given  the  sport  of   exposure  here  that  it   get   elsewhere   around the  world.    Cheating  and the    drug  and   steroid   issues    not   withstanding.  I    doubt    that      the    public   would  indeed    know   who    many  of  today's   top   stars   are    in   the  world  of  track  and    field  even    if  their     pictures   were    plastered     across     billboards    up  and    down   the    country.  The  sport      just   doesn't   garner     the   attention    it  once    did.   But  yet   thousands    of   scholarships     are   handed     out  each   year  to   promising    young   athletes   both   male and    female    whose     wish   someday    other  than    pursuing     an  education   is   to    compete   at the   highest    levels    of  the  sport.

There's  a  great   deal  of   money   that   can   be  made    but   it     pales    into   insignificance     when   measured   against   what   can  be  earned     in    the    other    major   sporting   endeavors      such    basketball,  football,  hockey  and    baseball.   But    there   are     some   athletes    that've been  able  to  make       a   living     competing   on   the   circuits   around  the  world.    The  strength   in  numbers  won't  be     lost   on  the  US  when   it sends   its  best   and   brightest  to   compete   in  the  summer  spectacle.   And  the   patriotism   shown    by  the  fans'll    no   doubt    be  there.

But as it  should   portend  to  the   sport   when   it's  not a  staple   for    the  fans   here   in  the   United  States.    It  can  be   said  that  it  doesn't  warrant     our  interest   one    iota.      But   the  coverage     that'll  be  dedicated     by  NBC  over   the    course  of the    Olympics   will  be  done   in such   a  way   that  it'll    play  on    our   emotions    and  to  all    our  most    sincere    of  needs.

The  likes   of   Usain  Bolt   and   other   who   are    no  doubt   world   class  athletes  are   nothing   but   a   long   list   of   athletes    who'll   garner     our   attention   but   for  a   brief   moment   over  the     course  of  the    ensuing months.   The      Olympics    themselves    notwithstanding   ,  I doubt  that   once  the   events   have    come  and   gone    we'll    have  really     been   concerned    with  what  took   place .   Unless   there's    some     political    unrest  or     protests   along  the  way     that  it   warrants    our   attention.

The  ideals     and  very   essence    of  what     the   games'    modern  day    founder   Pierre  de  Coubertin    had  wished  for .     Has    now been    lost  as it      has   become    nothing   more than    another     sporting    spectacle    bereft   of   any  integrity   and    high   moral    standards.   It   has if  anything   else    just    become    another   sporting   anathema     filled    with   nothing     more   than   commercialistic    values    and   very   little   else      !

All  good  things   must  come  to  an  end  . It  can  either  be  with  joy  or   sadness.     And   for  the   San  Antonio Spurs   their  demise   couldn't  be   offset    by  the  very  fact  that   their   coach  was   relying    on   experience  and age  trumping   over   youtful   exuberance    and   to a  lesser  respect    personality.

Having   lost    the   Western  Conference Finals  series   to  the   Los  Angeles Lakers   4-1 in   the best of   seven  series. It  can  be  said  that   the  Spurs'   run   though   coming   to  an  abrupt   end   wasn't  totally  unexpected.   They   continued  to    play    consistently   inconsistent.  And  were  found  wanting     on    so   many  occasions    that  it  became   embarrassing  at  times.     Popovich   was   outcoached    by  the   likes  of Byron   Scott  and the   ol'  Zen  Master   himself    Phil  Jackson.    And  even   though   he  was able   to  escape  by  the  skin  of his    teeth   with  the series    victory   over   the   New Orleans   Hornets.   You   knew  that  it  was   only  a  matter   of time    before  the   Spurs   would   have    their    comeuppance  served up  to   them   in an    unappetizing   fashion  and   manner.

The  Los Angeles   Lakers   led    by  league   MVP    Kobe Bryant     made   the   Spurs  seem    like   a  bunch   of  elderly      gentlemen    reminiscing   about   triumphs  past.   So    much   so     that   it  was     like  watching   the   pupil    school   their   master  in a   game of chess.    And   were   it  not  for   the   presence  of   Tim  Duncan   then  this   series   may    well   have    ended    in   the    Spurs   being   swept     out  of   finals   without so   much  as      a  win.  Let    alone   it  may   well  have    given   the appearance     that   they   shouldn't   have    made  it   to  the  conference   finals.   One  can    presume     that  the   Hornets   may  well  have  provided   the    Lakers    with   a    much  sterner   test     but   somehow    we   were   never   going  to   witness   that  particular  event.    Whereas  the   Spurs   used   their    experience  to    overcome   the   youthful  exuberance   of     the   New  Orleans   Hornets in   the  semi   finals.

All    of  the experience  in  the  world   couldn't  have   led  them   past  the   more   athletic   and   the   insatiable  appetite  shown    by   the  Los  Angeles Lakers.   They  wanted     victory    in  this   series      more   and     played    as  if    their     lives     depended   on  it.      The   Spurs  for   their  part    barely  showed   glimpses   as  to    what   had   made   them    four time champions     of  the   NBA    over the  last  decade.     Time  waits    for   no  man   and  it most    certainly wasn't  going  to be  waiting    on   the San  Antonio  Spurs.     They   toiled     judiciously      against    their     much    younger   opponents  and   came   up   wanting   when  it mattered   most.      In   each    of  the  five    games    played  they    allowed   the   Lakers   to   dictate   the   pace and     flow   of   the  games  . And    when   it   mattered    most    in     showing  an   offensive   presence    much    less  a  defensive    one .    The    cupboard  was bare   and   they    had     nothing to   show   for    their   spoils.

The   Lakers  are   to be   commended    for   their  part     in  making    the  finals  and  the    leadership   qualities   of    Bryant   was   on  display   for  all    to  see.   The maturation   of    the    player   now  can   be  said    to  be  complete.     He's    now  been   surrounded    by a   complement   of   players   that   appear  to be    more  than   willing     to defer   to   their  leader.    And     likewise     it'd   appear  that    Bryant     himself     finally   has    a  group    of   players   around  him  that   he   believes.      The  oncourt    chemistry  that  he   now   has    with     teammate  Pau  Gasol    can   be  fascinating    to  watch.  It's as  if      they   have  a  real   insight    into   each other's   game.      You'd   be   easily   fooled  into   believing that  they've   been   playing  together    for   years.    And   since    Gasol's    introduction   as   a   Laker this   team  was   able   to   lift    their  game    to  another  level.

San  Antonio  for   their   part  have   been    seemingly  reliant  on  their     triumvirate   of    Duncan   ,  Ginobili  and  Parker.     But  it's becoming     increasingly  apparent   that the   three    have  never     been   able   to   put  together  consistently,    games    where    they've  each     played  at    a  high  level.  That   has   been   one    of  the  major      problems   for   the   team    and the   fact that     age     and     fatigue  has    begun   to catch  up   with  several    players   on this  roster .   Robert    Horry   can    longer  be    counted   upon  to  even     show    anything    near     the   glory   years    he    had       with    his    former  team    and    with   San  Antonio.    He   scampers    around  the   court      like    a     puppy     waiting     for   his   master   to    throw     him   a  bone .     Defensive stalwart   Bruce   Bowen   has   shown  that  the   more    athletic    and      younger    players    can  have   their  way    with    him.    Especially  after    he's   pressed  into    dealing   with   the  defensive   task   of  dealing  someone   with  the   offensive    presence   of    Kobe   Bryant.     Who it  can   be  said    would  be a  mismatch   for   anyone   trying to  guard  him. 

Kobe  Bryant  is  congratulated  by Bruce   Bowen  at the   end  of  the  game.  And    despite  the   feeling     that  there   was    some   animus     shown    during  the   series. It  now  leaves   the  Spurs   with  the  unenviable  task  as  to   which   direction   this     franchise   ought   to     pursue   if   it's  to  return    to   its  former   glory.  They  can     go    out  and   try   to   pursue  free  agents    who'd   no    doubt   that   they'd    be  best  served   playing    alongside     the   likes   of   Parker  ,  Duncan  and  Ginobili.     Or  they  can     look    to   the draft  and      to  fulfill   their   needs    with  a   defensive   presence  and        a   proven  scorer.       Those  are   two  things        that   I for     one   believe  that  this  team  sorely    needs.     The  days    of     Finley,    Horry  and   quite   possibly    Thomas   may  well    be   numbered. Their   presence   this   postseason  hasn't  been  felt  and   if  nothing else   this  team    now   needs    to    go   younger.    Popovich     has   to  be   aware  of  this   but    their  tried  and tested  method   was what    brought   the  franchise    multiple    championships.   However   there   comes   a  time    where   change   is   good    and  necessary.

For  Phil   Jackson  he  now  sits   on  the  cusp  of  history  , awaiting   to see   if  he can   win  his  tenth  championship  as a  coach  and  his    eleventh    overall during  the  course of   his   illustrious  career.     The  brunt  of  the  talk against   him   was   that  he   always   had  Jordan   or O'Neal .  And  that   he  couldn't coach   a   group  of    players     put     together    from   a  varying  assortment   of    pieces. At  this   juncture     I  do   believe   that   he's  proved    many   of   his  doubters    wrong.    He's   got a   superstar   in    Bryant    but    the  rest   of  the  roster  it can   be   said   are     players    that    given   their    roles  are   more than   willing  to listen to   their  coach   and   defer   to   Bryant  as and  when   necessary.       Bryant   for    his  part      seems   to  have    found    a   wealth   of   confidence    in  his   teammates  where    he's    more   than  willing   to reciprocate.    A  year    ago    we    mightn't   have   been  saying    this   about  the     player   at   this     juncture.

Times    change    and     so  too   does    the  maturity  level, the   understanding  of   people  and  what  is   necessary   in   order  to  win.   For    both of   these    teams   it  now   seems   that   there's    a  new    chapter  to be  written   in  both  of  their   anthologies.
