About Me: I am a lifelong Pittsburgher, and follow the Steelers and Penguins passionately. The Pirates have managed to squelch any remaining interest in baseball, sadly. I follow Penn State in football primarily, but give some love to Pitt and WVU. I'm also a whitewater kayaker, and occasionally post trip reports for my own writing pleasure! Enjoy.

    Some guy named Tiger...

Tuesday, May 27, 2008, 07:36 PM EST [PGA]

Hey, the PGA had several tournaments lately!  Really?  I hadn't heard?  I wonder why...

Oh, yeah, that's right.  That guy...what's his name...?  Like, big cat, lion, puma, oh!  TIGER Woods wasn't in it.  He underwent a quick knee surgery and is now in rehab.

Basically, the only story that you have to know is that it was (big giant letters and a drum roll please) BREAKING NEWS that Tiger held a news conference to basically say (reiterate I should correct) that he was "on target" to play in the US Open in Torrey Pines in June.  Gee, thanks, Tiger.  Good thing you're coming back.  The Memorial is this weekend - and the only reason I know that is that I saw the blimp flying overhead as I drove from Columbus to Cleveland today for work.  Which brought those of us in the car to briefly discuss golf...and how Tiger wasn't playing, and therefore none of us were going to watch.  Or even care.

The argument over who's the best golfer ever already has to include Tiger Woods, and one day may be a rather moot argument.  Tiger's going to set the record - I don't think there's any doubt.  However, if you want to judge one man's dominance in a sport...just look at golf coverage on ESPN and Fox.  There's very little of it.  Why?  Tiger's in hibernation, getting that knee to flex better.  One man.  Just one man.  And every time he swings a club he makes news.  That is the power of Tiger Woods.  Say what you will about his career thus far, and where it may end up one day in the future.  But no man has held sway over an entire sport to the degree that Tiger holds sway over golf.  If that's not utter and complete dominance...change the definition.

    Dominance: See Tiger Woods.
