    Super Bowl XVLI Betting Preview

    Wednesday, January 25, 2012, 10:51 AM [NFL]

Eli Manning has been a fourth-quarter hero for New York and he will need to have more magic as the 2.5-point underdog Giants face the Patriots in Super Bowl XVLI.

They head to Indianapolis and try to snatch a fourth Super Bowl title from the grasp of Tom Brady and legendary coach Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots on February 5th.

The posted OVER/UNDER total is set at 55 at shops tracked by OddsShark.com for this betting matchup. If Super Bowl betting history repeats itself this time, the Giants will cover the spread as underdogs are 7-3 ATS in the past 10 seasons.

The Giants could have folded a long time ago when they were sitting at just 6-6, but a resilient group now has themselves in position for a second Super Bowl in its past five seasons.

New York has a win over the Patriots this season and the point spread is well within reach. The Giants have covered the point spread in three straight betting matchups with the Patriots.

In three playoff games Manning has thrown for eight fourth-quarter touchdowns with big wins over NFC favorites Green Bay and San Francisco.

Vegas may have the Giants as underdogs, but they will see their share of action on the Super Bowl XLVI betting lines. New York did beat New England 17-14 as underdogs in the 2008 Super Bowl, and Manning has a strong playoff resume.

Brady and company aren’t winners of three Super Bowls because they have been failures, so it’s safe to assume they will see most of the attention from bettors on the NFL betting lines for Super Bowl XVLI.

New England has won four of the last six head-to-head - and with three losses compared to the Giants seven this year - it’s likely an edge for NFL bettors to pick the Patriots.

In early props betting, it’s the Patriots who are a slight 1.5-point favorite to be ahead after the first quarter in Super Bowl XVLI. Oddsmakers also see the Patriots securing a 2.5-point spread in halftime props betting.

Other early NFL props for Super Bowl XVLI:

First quarter OVER/UNDER posted total (10)

First half OVER/UNDER posted total (26.5)

Total points predicted to be scored in second quarter (17)

Check back later in the week for more props betting options like, who will win the coin toss, or which quarterback will throw the first touchdown in this year’s Super Bowl.
