Auburn favored over Oregon in BCS odds

    Monday, January 10, 2011, 9:06 AM [NCAAFB]

Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton leads No. 1 Auburn and its highly-potent offense as slight 2-point favorites against second-ranked Oregon in a first-ever BCS title game for both schools.

The total at most sportsbooks is sitting at 74 in expectation of a high-scoring affair with expectations that Cam Newton could break the 100-yard rushing mark, according to some prop odds offered on the game.

Newton’s stellar season included 1,409 yards off the ground with 20 touchdowns. He has an air attack that is equally intimidating - tossing 28 TD passes as the top-rated passer in the nation – and had just six interceptions.

The Tigers seem battle-ready, having to fight back several times in an undefeated season that needed heroics from Newton. They also faced five teams ranked in the Top 18, while Oregon met just one team inside that mark.

[ BCS Title Game - Oregon vs Auburn Matchup Stats ]

Auburn went 12-0 SU while capturing the SEC, and went an impressive 9-3 ATS during the year. With less than a field goal on the betting lines between the two, Auburn could be a popular choice in the BCS Championship Game odds.

The top-ranked rushing offense of Oregon is led by Heisman candidate tailback LaMichael James, who led the nation with 152.9 yards per game and 21 touchdowns. [ Oregon ATS Game Logs ]

What’s most impressive about James is he ran for 622 yards with eight touchdowns against ranked teams. This guy is a gamer.

Darron Thomas is not Cam Newton, but he sure can sting opponents with his arm – giving the Ducks a dual-threat combo. [ Auburn ATS game logs ] Thomas amassed 2,518 yards with 28 touchdowns, while rushing for another 492 yards with five scores.

Thomas and James will pose huge problems for the Auburn defense, which surrendered 28 points per game over its final eight outings.

Oregon puts up a nation-leading 49 points per game, and getting down early could be too much for Newton to dig his team out of this time.

The Ducks were also undefeated in 13 games this season in capturing the Pac-10, but not quite as good against the spread as Auburn, standing at 6-4-1 ATS.

Cotton Bowl Highlights College Bowl Sked

    Friday, January 7, 2011, 12:14 PM [NCAAFB]

College football fans will need to make the most of their chances with just four bowl games left and three to wager against this weekend.

The 11th-ranked LSU Tigers and their stellar defense are a slight 2-point favorite when they play the retooled Texas A&M Aggies on Friday night in the Cotton Bowl.

Most shops tracked by OddsShark.com have the total set at a relatively low 49 for the matchup.

LSU ranks eighth in total defense (301.7), ninth in scoring defense, and 10th against the pass - allowing 165.8 yards per game.

Backup QB Ryan Tannehill won six straight after taking over a 3-3 Aggies team and propelled them into a bowl game. This is an underdog team that should not be taken lightly.

The Aggies are strong contenders to cover the spread - posting a respectable 7-4 ATS record during the season and there are plenty of player props and other interesting odds available to liven this game.

Kentucky is making its fifth straight appearance in a bowl matchup when they meet the Pittsburgh Panthers in the Compass Bowl on Saturday.

Virtually every book has the Panthers as 3.5-point favorites, with the total sitting at 52.5. Small underdogs have bitten hard this bowl season.

The Wildcats wreaked havoc on top-ranked Auburn and No. 21 Mississippi State while defeating SEC East champion South Carolina. Kentucky could be a good underdog threat in this weekend finale of NCAAF betting.

Pittsburgh will be out to prove oddsmakers were correct in labelling them as favorites for this matchup. They were 11th nationally in total defense, and along with a solid running game they should be the popular betting team.

The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl goes on Sunday when the highly-favored Nevada Wolf Pack look to tear apart the Boston College Eagles. The Wolf Pack are 7.5-point favorites at most books, while the total is set at 55. [ Matchup stats ]

Nevada is third in the nation with 535.5 yards per game, and quarterback Colin Kaepernick along with backfield sensation Vai Taua will lead the charge against the Eagles.

Boston College’s hopes rest with a defense that allowed just 11.8 yards per game and forced 12 turnovers during its five-game season-ending win streak.
