Will David Beckham ever have the impact on soccer in the United Stated that he plans on having? No. Will soccer ever be relevant in the United States? Again, no.
Okay maybe ticket sales and revenue is up in the MLS, but none of these added fans care about soccer. They are flocking to the supposedly premier event. When someone signs a $250 million contract people expect big results and are curious to see. Just give it time and ticket sales will drop and fall back to normal. Since joining the L.A Galaxy Beckham has only made one brief 16 minute appearance.
In order for Beckham to have any impact at all he needed to play immediately and be showcased to the rest of the country. However, he has been sidelined due to a previously sustained ankle injury and has become virtually unheard of. I guess is a way he had made an impact in the fact that I am even writing this post and talking about soccer.
Sure Beckham got people thinking and talking, but it was a short term buzz that wore off and in the end soccer will never be relevant in this country. This country is dominated by football, baseball, and basketball and as long as they are around soccer will not be relevant.
Americans will always prefer the overtime touchdown, walk-off home run, and the buzzer beating three pointers over the goal in extra time.
There are plenty of aspects that cause soccer to be unappealing. Among these aspects are the low scoring games. It is hard to sit in front of a television for 90 minutes for a game that could possibly end 1-0 or even worse 0-0. That brings me to my next point, soccer has ties and this is unbearable. When there is competition no matter whatever it is we all want a winner. When the Major League Baseball All Star Game ended in a tie there were a lot of angry people. At that time it was an exhibition game, but we still wanted a winner. No one can stand a whole season where ties are tolerated. My last point is the clock. At the end of the half or the game the referee gets to add time onto the game at their own discretion. I hate the fact that you do not know when the game is going to end, as I believe that it takes excitement out of the finish of an already dull game.
