    Jets Vs. Bye Preview

Saturday, October 4, 2008, 03:12 PM EST [General]

The Jets are 3 point favorites against the bye week and I am not only hoping for a win, but for the Jets to come out of it healthy.

Their quarterback-nursing a sore ankle, Favre has time to get better as long as he doesn't spend too much time scoping out Woody's thousand acre compound looking for a spot to set up his tree stand this winter.

Their wide receiver-has time to heal his broken heart (and hamstring) to develop his BUSINESS relationship with the new leader of the offense and show us that week four was not an anomaly, but what we have been waiting for in terms of production and potential this season.

Their nose tackle-has time to heal his back, return to form, and in the process potentialy get to the prowl-bowl this year.

Their kicker-has a moment to relflect on wether he will be kicking for the Jets or working at Stop and Shop for the next ten years.

    And last but not least......

The guy who runs the NewYork Jets.com web site-why does he have a job?  Here is an actual picture he posted in the photo gallery for the Flight Crew.....

You don't need glasses, but I can not say the same for the webmaster.

Seriously, what are they thinking?  With the lovely ladies of the flight crew your focus, this is what you come up with?  They are not doing their job on the flight crew and that is a shame.

Woody, you gotta keep an eye on this.

    Jets-Arizona postgame notes

Monday, September 29, 2008, 08:33 AM EST [General]

The New York Jets took it to the Arizona Cardinals despite the heavy burden of the NFL's most atrocious throwback uniforms seen last weekend.

Arizona was never really in the game, as Kurt Warner seemed to hand the Jets victory over and over by consistently turning the ball over during a relentless pass rush.

Brett Favre threw for 6 touchdown passes, but the big story might be the chemistry developing between the quarterback and his receivers.  Coles had three touchdowns and caught ten passes.  He had caught only eight passes in the first three games this season.

I think Brett will hang out in NJ during the bye-there is still a lot of work to be done, and now the team is showing some promise.

Speaking of showing promise, Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace and Sean Ellis each had a sack yesterday, David Bowens had two.  Kris Jenkins had another great day stuffing the middle and applying pressure to Kurt Warner while allowing others to bask in the glory of the sacks.  Jenkins should go to the pro bowl if he can stay healthy.

Speaking of Bryan Thomas, he leads the team in sacks with 4 so far this season.  My favorite player on defense (David Harris) leads the team with 31 tackles so far.

The Jets held the Cards to 42 yards rushing but gave up an alarming 426 yards passing playing a prevent defense most of the time.  Bill Parcells has said that the only thing a prevent defense does is to prevent a team from willing.

No sign of Justin Miller yesterday-again.  He has been absent for most of this season and I wonder if he will even be on the team next year.  I wouldn't be surprised if he was traded for a high draft pick.

After the bye, the Jets face Cincinnati, Oakland and Kansas City.  They have a real good shot at 5-2 by the time they face off against Buffalo in week 9.

    Jets-Chargers Postgame Notes

Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 05:05 AM EST [General]

I am always amazed at how teams react in similar situations.  At the end of last nights game the Chargers were celebrating their victory as if they had made the playoffs while the Jets seemed to mope around as if they just lost the playoffs.  Both teams had just arrived at the same record of 1-2 on the year, yet their moods were dramatically different.

It reminded me of what my friend JT told me just before the game-that the Chargers needed the win more than the Jets did.  Last night, the showed it, stomping the Jets and showing the world that it was way too early to write them off.

The Jets had no answers for the Chargers offense last night, and if Kris Jenkins misses any significant amount of playing time, this defense is in trouble.  Jenkins showed what he is worth to the team in value in his absence.  The Jets had no sacks last night and gave Chargers quarterback plenty of time to pick apart their secondary, but it doesn't end there.

Farve had two interceptions.  Thomas Jones fumbled once and was contained to 37 total yards of rushing.

Coles, Cotchery and Stucky each had a touchdown reception, and David Barrett picked of the first pass thrown at him on defense, but it was not enough to keep San Diego from running away with the game.

Favre had plenty of time in the pocket to make his throws, but the offense just didn't get the job done.  Not when the defense gives up 49 points.

This weekend, Miami upset the New England Patriots and Buffalo improved to 3-0.  The Jets did little to help their own cause.

    Will the Jets get better?

    When?

Next up, another chance to improve when the 1-2 Jets face the 2-1 Cardinals at the Meadowlands.  If the Jets should pull out the win we may see another anomaly of tow teams with similar records with opposit reactions.  Who wants it more?

    We will find out Sunday.

    Jest Notes-week 3

Friday, September 19, 2008, 05:11 AM EST [General]

The Jets will catch a break weather wise on Monday.  In their first two games of the season the average field temperature was 98 degrees.  They can expect it to be in the upper 60's come game time Monday night.  Also, with the three hour time differential, it will feel more like a afternoon game than a Monday night game.

The Chargers face two beatable teams next-Oakland and Miami, then have to play New England in San Diego and Buffalo on the road, and then the Saints right before they have their bye week.  If they loose to the Jets on Monday night, I can see them going to 2-6 at the bye.

The Patriots have been upset by the Dolphins in the past, so don't rule out an upset this weekend.

So far the Jets have been slow in getting their defense off the field late in the game, and they have not yet done a good enough job getting it done in the second half.  Penalties have hurt them in each of their two games.  The Jets seem tired mentally and physically.  So you tell me, was it a good idea for  coach Eric Mangini to lighten up on the players in training camp and shorten practices?

Player notes:  Bryan Thomas seems to have gotten the message.  The money we spent on Kris Jenkins was well worth it.  Calvin Pace is as advertised.  The Jets are currently ranked 6th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed.

Jet web site notes: The Jets have brought in another writer (?) to their site whose credentials include playing ultimate Frisbee and snowboarding.  I guess someone in the organization lost a bet because this is a slap in the face to journalism.

Jets flight crew notes: The Jets Flight Crew unveiled their new uniforms last week.  Does it look like they are wearing diapers?  You tell me.

    Three and out?

Tuesday, September 16, 2008, 05:10 AM EST [General]

Writers and fans often find a sticking point to a game and focus their attention to it, no matter what else happened during the contest.  They want you to believe that if the team just did one thing differently, the outcome would have been different.
For the Jets-Patriots game, the moment seemed to be when the Jets, on the three consecutive plays from the three yard line, chose to run the ball three consecutive times instead of utilizing Brett Favre to do what he has always done best, which is throwing touchdown passes.   In fact, nobody has done it better.  Does this make sense?
I guess it does if you want to wrap up the entire game in one simple package, but I tend to believe that it is a combination of little things that the Jets didn't do that made the difference on Sunday.
As I pointed out in my previous post, the game was a statistical dead heat.  Total yards were nearly identical, as was rushing yard, passing yards, sacks and time of possession.  The single most glaring statistic that stands out from this game was penalty yards.
Eric Allen, the senior managing editor on the Jets web site nailed it in his post game report.  He wrote: "The New York Jets couldn't overcome a number of critical mistakes today as they suffered a home-opening 19-10 loss to the New England Patriots."
He goes on to explain about the factors that cost the Jets the game.  60 yards worth of penalties, a missed field goal, a costly interception, dropped balls.  The only thing he forgot to mention was a blocking mismatch that created a quarterback sack.
It was not about three plays at the goal line, although I have to wonder why they didn't attempt to pass it at least one to Coles, Cochery, Stucky or Keller.  The game was lost on a lot of other little things that writers for the Post, the News or the Star Ledger overlooked because it is easier to focus on one thing than it is on the big picture.  A focus on the bigger picture reveals a silver lining.  The problems can be fixed.  The team is still learning how to work together.
Will the Jets will fix these things; can they improve and eliminate the errors made last Sunday?
Today, in Florham Park New Jersey, they will get to work on it.
They better, or it is going to be a long season.
