A half dozen years of hard-to-stomach football

Sunday, December 14, 2008, 06:48 PM EST [General]

    Miami 14, San Francisco 9

Miami ; 1-15 in 2007 to at worst a 9-7 record this year, and maybe more. Along with Atlanta this year, the list of hapless down and out teams that manage to sort things out in short order continues. So why are the 49ers still mirered with losing record after losing record for the 6th straight season?

    One word - Ownership

While the turn around efforts of Mike Singletary, Shaun Hill and company the past few weeks have been commendable, the mess left by John York's decision making blunders remain. It all started with Steve Mariucci's dismissal in 2003 after leading the team to a 10-6 record in '02 and a division crown. (the team's last).........

Nolan's Final Draft: A Master Piece of Wasted Opportunities

Sunday, April 27, 2008, 11:35 PM EST [General]

The 49ers totally screwed the pooch again on the most crucial day of Mike Nolan and Scot McCloughan's careers respectively. Draft day. If Nolan doesn't get the Niners off to a good start this season, he will undoubtedly be given his pink slip and McCloughan, Nolan's former assistant and now his "boss", (yeah, right, you really laid down the law, Dr. York) will be shown the door with him....and they did nothing this weekend to help keep that from being a reality.

Start with needs -- a wide receiver would be nice. With apologies to Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill, newcomers Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce, or any wide receiver. "Any" were there. Better than any, in fact. Devin Thomas was there for the picking and he was a first-round pick until pickers began plucking. So was James Hardy. And what about DeSean Jackson? Sorry. Niners pass, even though coach Mike Nolan said it: We need offense........ Read More of this article at 49ers World

Nolan & Martz Will Sink Or Swim - Together

Sunday, March 9, 2008, 03:55 PM EST [San Francisco Giants]

Mike Martz will last a year, maybe two, as the San Francisco 49ers' offensive coordinator. The question is: How will this end? The worst-case scenario is, of course, is that the 49ers experience their sixth consecutive losing season and miss the playoffs. Mike Nolan gets fired and with him, the entire staff, Martz included. The best thing the 49ers can hope for is that Martz turns around a terrible offense and rescues the fast-sinking career of quarterback Alex Smith. He leaves after a year or two to get another NFL coaching job, with the 49ers' thanks.

Without question, Martz is one of the NFL's preeminent offensive minds. He was.....read more of this article @ 49ers World.

Return To Glory Won't Be Solved By Players Or Coaches

Sunday, March 2, 2008, 10:01 AM EST [General]

In April 2000, Eddie DeBartolo (right) relinquished his stake as the 49ers' majority owner after being implicated in a bribing scandal. With Eddie gone, the golden era of 49ers football was nearing its end. Denise DeBartolo York and her husband John York (below) took over the team. And in their eight years at the helm of the team, one thing has become patently clear: They just don't get it. Because Denise, Eddie's younger sister, showed no enthusiasm or interest in running the franchise, that responsibility was deferred to John, who admitted in an interview in 2003 that he really wasn't into it, either. A medical researcher by trade, Dr. York was neither a football aficionado nor adept at public relations. And under his stewardship, the 49ers headed for a prolonged decline.

Aloof and often inaccessible, York has been a meddlesome owner who's had a few dust-ups with the media, of all people..... Read more of this article @ 49ers World

    Don't Stop At Bruce

Sunday, March 2, 2008, 12:10 AM EST [General]

So far in free-agency, the 49ers have addressed the most pressing need - at wide receiver, with the addition of 15 year veteran and future hall-of-famer Isaac Bruce. While this is a quick fix which may yield a year or at most 2 years of help to a struggling unit, it won't be enough. Upon review of the U.F.A. (Unrestricted Free Agent) list, there are several viable options for the Niners to beef up the wide-out position. Since this team has never drafted a legitimate target in the 1st round (with the one notable exception being the greatest receiver ever), I don't have a lot of faith in their ability to find one this April.......
