The Wings could sure use Manny in Goal right now.
The Entertainment channel may want to look into making a True Hollywood Story about Detroit Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood. How the Mighty have fallen strikes me as a fitting title for the once stellar goaltender, who has since returned to his roots in Detroit to dissapoint a hockey deprived hockey town.
In the offseason Detroit fans were anxious about Osgood's signing, as he played a prominent role in the early stages of the Wings dynasty. Osgood replaced a mediocre Tim Cheveldae in the early 90s and led the Wings to the playoffs for a handful of seasons before being benched for Mike Vernon.
After all was said and done, and Verny had won the Wings their first cup in about four decades Osgood returned to the crease where he led the Wings to their second best title with an arguably less talented defense without all-star Vladimer Konstantinov who was paralyzed in a car accident.
Now after a fourseasons away from the "Joe" with stints in St. Louis and New York, Osgood appears to not be the goalie he once was. Osgood who was expected to challenge for the starting goalie position with long time back-up Manny Legace has suprised many fans and proven he is the inferior goalkeeper. But with nagging injuries to Legacy and a less than solid third stringer from the Wings have had no place to turn but the aging red haired keeper.
Earlier this week Osgood let up three goals on his first four shots - this after coming of the bench to replace the Wings third string goalie who is about as well known as Udonis Haslem. Then tonight Osgood let up a goal mere seconds into overtime making it the second time this season he has let up a crucial early overtime goal.
I don't know whether Osgood is not motivated or is just past his prime, but for the Red Wings to contend with their senior citizen laden offense they must have a strong netminder - Osgood has proven he isn't the goalie we remember from the 1998 Stanley Cup run rather, the one from 1993 who lost to the San Jose Sharks.
:This season with the Wings Osgood is already sporting his worst goals against average of his 12-year NHL career.
