I'll explore the plays
Last week, I posted a quick hit in the blog space to give the virtual salute to a good friend of mine who tested his wits against the big, blue "Jeopardy" board. It's a football-like chess match, so just indulge me.
I knew that my man Paul was sharp, well-read and quick-witted, but I must say that I was impressed with his ability to nimbly dance between categories such as "Biblical Abominations" and "Musical Theater." He finished his phenomenal run as a five-time champion with an invite to the "Tournament of Champions." My two-year old daughter jumped to her feet with every correct answer, yelling "Yay! Mr. Paul."
As I say all the time, it's all about domination. Well done, sir.
Back to the football field, have you already "crowned" the Patriots after nine weeks? You know, the famous Dennis Green blow up following the Monday night meltdown against the Bears last season?
The Colts played the Patriots very well without wide receiver Marvin Harrison, with Joseph Addai shining brightly on the big stage. It wasn't until late that the Patriots kicked into gear on both sides of the ball, with the now-infamous strip of Peyton Manning and the return of "Moss and Toss." Everyone played their normal role. Brady overcame two early interceptions to throw three touchdown passes (nine straight weeks with at least three touchdown passes). Fantasy hero Wes Welker tip-toed at the goal line. Only Laurence Maroney owners were left holding the bag in this one.
But, lost in the hype surrounding this game, fans and fantasy owners were treated to a brilliant slate of games. Adrian Peterson, often compared to LaDainian Tomlinson, electrified the home crowd with a record-setting day against the Chargers, ripping off a series of huge runs to pile up 296 yards with three touchdowns. Meanwhile, the man whose record he broke, Jamal Lewis, took advantage of his goal-line work four a four touchdown day.
It was a satisfying day of football. Yes, the Colts-Pats game lived up to the hype. The Browns-Seahawks game was phenomenal, save the efforts of a banged-up Shaun Alexander. The Bills won a thriller over the Bengals. The Packers continued their run through the NFC North and kept pace with the seemingly ever-improving Detroit squad (have you seen this defense fly around lately?).
The games of Week 10 are equally intriguing, although everyone heavily invested in New England players is gripping because of the Bye. Who will shine in their absence? Losman and the Bills against the Dolphins? Can the Ravense, whose effort on Monday was called "embarrassing" by Pittsburgh great Mel Blount, actually put forth something together against Cincinnati? It looks good on paper. Can Billick and his squad deliver come Sunday?
We'll break it down during the course of the week. In the interim, check the Fantasy section of FOXSports.com for advice on waiver pickups and match-up analysis.
